The steps for opening the controls vary by device, and the choices you see depend on the title, region, and device.
Change subtitles or audio during playback
Start the video, reveal its playback controls, then select the on-screen subtitle or audio control. Apple documents the following device-specific routes; labels and features can differ by model, software version, country, and region. Apple’s cross-device instructions also note that some features are unavailable on certain smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles.

Apple TV, smart TV, or streaming device
- Use the remote’s play/pause or timeline control to bring up playback controls.
- Select Subtitles, then choose an available language or caption option. Choose the off option to stop showing subtitles.
- To change spoken audio, select Audio or Languages, depending on the app’s label, and choose an available track.
iPhone, iPad, or Android
- Tap the video to show its controls.
- Tap Subtitles and choose an available option.
- Tap Languages to select an available audio track.
On iPhone or iPad, Apple also documents a Settings route for languages downloaded with videos. That setting concerns downloaded video language preferences; it is separate from choosing a track in the playback controls. See Apple’s instructions for the current route.
Mac, PC, or web
- Move the pointer over the video to reveal the playback controls.
- Choose the subtitle or language control to select subtitles, or the audio control to choose an available audio track.
Apple Vision Pro
- Open the playback controls.
- Choose More Controls, then Subtitles or Languages.
- Select an available option.
For Apple TV hardware, you can set a default subtitle language and automatic subtitle behaviors under Settings > Video and Audio. Apple TV 4K settings include options for subtitles on different-language content, while muted, or after skipping back. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K subtitle settings guide.

Subtitles, closed captions, and audio descriptions
Subtitles versus CC/SDH
Subtitles generally display spoken dialogue, often in another language. Closed captions and SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing) are accessibility options that can include dialogue and other audio information when the title provides them. In the Apple TV app’s supported accessibility settings, you can enable CC/SDH and choose or customize caption styles. Device-level accessibility settings may also offer a default CC/SDH preference; the menu path depends on the device. Some devices use their own built-in caption controls. Apple’s accessibility guide explains supported options and device limitations.
Audio descriptions
Audio descriptions are a separate accessibility audio track that narrates visual information; they are not translated dialogue. If a video includes an audio-described track, select Audio or Audio Options during playback on a supported device and choose that track if it appears. Apple explains the playback controls in its subtitles and audio controls guide.

If a language or caption option is missing
- Check the title’s information page. Look for the languages and accessibility features listed for that show or film. Apple says availability varies by title and country or region.
- Confirm the device supports the feature. Some smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles do not offer every Apple TV app accessibility feature.
- Make sure you are in the right playback menu. Subtitles and audio tracks are selected from playback controls; default preferences and accessibility settings are separate controls.
- Use the control that matches your device. If the menu is hard to find, first reveal playback controls with the remote, a tap, or the pointer, as appropriate; remote buttons and app layouts are not identical on every device.
A setting cannot add a language track, CC/SDH captions, or audio descriptions that the title or service does not provide. Apple’s guidance is direct: “If you can’t see subtitles or language options, they may not be available for that TV programme or film.” Check Apple’s availability guidance alongside the title details.
