The safest way to customize alerts on a Samsung Galaxy is to work from the app level, then check system-wide exceptions. Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications, turn on Allow notifications, and adjust the categories that the app provides. Afterward, verify Do not disturb, notification volume, lock-screen display, pop-ups, and badges so an important call or message is not hidden by another setting.

Menu names and available controls vary by Galaxy model, One UI version, app, and region. Use the paths below as a reliable framework, but follow the labels shown on your phone when they differ.

Start with the app you want to change

Samsung lets you control notifications per app instead of forcing one setting on the entire phone. This is the right starting point when you want, for example, messages to make a sound while a shopping app remains quiet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Choose the app. If the list is long, tap the search icon and type its name.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Turn Allow notifications on if the app’s alerts are currently blocked.
  6. Review the notification categories and other controls displayed for that app.

Depending on the app, you may be able to choose a sound, vibration, pop-up behavior, or several combinations of those options. The category list is created by the app, so two apps will not necessarily expose the same switches. An app can also divide alerts into categories such as messages, calls, reminders, or background activity.

Allow or block an entire app

The main Allow notifications switch is an app-wide gate. Turning it off prevents that app’s notifications from appearing or making notification sounds. Turning it on restores the app’s available categories, but it does not override Do not disturb, muted notification volume, or an individual category that has been set to silent.

Tune categories instead of silencing everything

When categories are listed, leave the important ones enabled and change only the low-value categories. For instance, you can keep direct-message alerts audible while making promotional or routine status updates silent. If the app offers separate sound and vibration controls, decide those independently: a vibration-only alert can be useful in a meeting, while a distinct sound is easier to notice when the phone is across a room.

Give important notifications a recognizable sound

Some Galaxy phones hide per-category sound controls until an advanced option is enabled. Samsung Community’s One UI 6 guide describes this route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.
  2. Enable Manage notification categories for each app.
  3. Return to Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications.
  4. Tap Notification categories.
  5. Select the category you want to change.
  6. Tap Sound and choose the tone.

The guide’s screenshots were taken on a UK Galaxy Z Flip6 running One UI 6.1.1. Samsung may place the switch elsewhere or use different wording on another model, One UI release, or regional firmware. If you do not see the setting, update your phone and app if updates are available, then look for a category-specific sound control under the app’s notification page.

Choose an alert style that fits the situation

Control What it changes When to use it
Sound Plays a selected notification tone for the category. Use for alerts that must be noticed immediately.
Vibration Adds tactile feedback, independently of or alongside sound. Useful when the phone is muted or you are in a noisy place.
Pop-up Shows an on-screen banner when the alert arrives. Useful for time-sensitive messages you want to see without opening the notification shade.
Silent behavior Keeps an alert in the notification area without an audible alert; exact choices depend on the app and software version. Use for updates that should remain available but should not interrupt you.

For an app such as Google Messages, choose the conversation or message category exposed by the app, then assign a different tone if that category is available. Do not assume every conversation has its own category: the app determines how finely it can be customized.

Control where notifications appear

Sound is only one part of an alert. Samsung separates notification visibility into lock-screen notifications, pop-ups, and app icon badges. Their exact location and names vary by One UI version.

Lock-screen notifications

Lock-screen settings determine whether an incoming alert is visible before you unlock the phone. If you rely on seeing a message at a glance, enable lock-screen notifications and choose the level of detail you are comfortable displaying. A privacy-focused setting can show that an alert exists without revealing its content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pop-up notifications

Pop-ups briefly place an alert over the current screen. Enable them for urgent categories, such as direct messages or appointment reminders, and disable them for noisy categories that can wait in the notification shade. A category can be allowed to make a sound without displaying a pop-up, or display a pop-up without an audible tone, depending on the controls exposed by the app.

App icon badges

Badges put a count or indicator on an app icon. They are useful when you do not want a sound or pop-up but still need a visual reminder. If a badge is missing while notifications otherwise work, check the app’s notification display options and the launcher or home-screen badge setting on your Galaxy.

Use Do not disturb without losing priority alerts

Do not disturb is not necessarily an all-or-nothing silence switch. Samsung describes it as muting calls and notifications except for the people and apps you allow. This makes it possible to silence routine alerts overnight while permitting calls from selected contacts or alerts from a critical app.

Review permitted people and apps

  1. Open Settings and go to Notifications > Do not disturb (on some versions, open Sounds and vibration > Do not disturb).
  2. Open the sections for permitted people, calls, messages, or apps.
  3. Add the contacts and apps whose alerts must break through.
  4. Check whether repeat callers or favorite contacts are treated separately, and enable those options only if they match your needs.

Names and placement differ by model and by the region where the phone was purchased. If you cannot find an exception, use the Settings search field for “Do not disturb” and inspect every permitted-alert section rather than assuming the main switch is the only control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check schedules

A schedule can turn Do not disturb on automatically for bedtime, work, or meetings. Open the schedule list and verify its start time, end time, days, and permitted exceptions. An unexpected schedule is a common reason an app appears to stop notifying at the same time each day. Disable a schedule you no longer use or edit it so priority calls and apps remain permitted.

Distinguish Do not disturb from app blocking

If an app is blocked on its own notification page, adding it to Do not disturb exceptions will not restore alerts. First enable Allow notifications for the app and its important category, then configure the exception. Conversely, if the app is enabled but quiet only during a particular period, investigate Do not disturb schedules before changing the app again.

Check volume and mute controls when an alert arrives silently

A notification can be enabled and still produce no audible sound because the notification-volume channel is low or muted.

Raise notification volume

  1. Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume.
  2. Find the Notifications slider.
  3. Raise it to a level you can hear, then trigger a test notification from the app.

Notification volume is separate from media volume. Playing music loudly does not prove that notification volume is high enough, and lowering media volume does not necessarily change notification volume.

Check mute and accessibility settings

Review the phone’s sound mode and make sure it is not set to mute or vibrate-only when you expect a tone. Also open the accessibility sound controls and check that Mute all sounds is disabled. This accessibility setting can suppress sounds beyond the app-level controls, so changing an app’s tone will not overcome it.

Investigate power saving and protected app areas

Power saving

Power-saving features can restrict background activity. If an app becomes quiet after the phone enters a power-saving mode, inspect the power-saving settings and any list of apps allowed to run or send alerts. Keep the important app permitted if your Galaxy offers that choice, then test while the screen is off.

Secure Folder

Apps inside Secure Folder have a separate notification context. An app outside Secure Folder and a copy of the same app inside it can have different notification permissions and behavior. Open Secure Folder, check the app’s own notification settings there, and review Do not disturb and power-saving rules that apply to the protected area. Samsung’s Secure Folder troubleshooting also recommends checking whether the relevant app is allowed through Do not disturb.

Change settings directly from a notification

On Samsung’s Galaxy A56 guide, touching and holding a notification opens quick controls. From that panel you can turn off the app’s alerts or open its settings to adjust sound or vibration. This is convenient when you have just received an unwanted alert and want to reach the correct app page without browsing through Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat this as a device-specific shortcut rather than a universal Galaxy instruction. If a long press does not expose the controls, tap the notification’s options menu or use the full path Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications.

Build a setup that preserves important alerts

Use this sequence when configuring a new phone or auditing notification settings after an update:

  1. List the alerts you cannot miss. Include emergency contacts, work or family messaging, calendar reminders, authentication prompts, and any app that monitors a time-sensitive event.
  2. Enable those apps. For each one, open its notification page and turn on Allow notifications.
  3. Keep only necessary categories audible. Assign a recognizable sound and vibration to the categories that require immediate attention; leave routine categories silent or disabled.
  4. Choose a visibility level. Allow lock-screen display, pop-ups, badges, or a combination that fits your privacy and attention needs.
  5. Configure Do not disturb exceptions. Permit the people and apps from your important-alert list, and verify every active schedule.
  6. Verify sound paths. Check notification volume, the phone’s sound mode, and Mute all sounds.
  7. Test under real conditions. Send a message, lock the screen, enable your usual Do not disturb period, and confirm the priority alert still arrives in the way you selected.
Goal Settings to inspect Expected result
Never miss a selected app App notification permission, important category, Do not disturb app exception The app can alert even while routine notifications are suppressed.
Hear only urgent updates Category sound and vibration; other categories set to silent or off Urgent alerts are audible while low-priority activity stays unobtrusive.
See alerts without sound Lock-screen display, pop-ups, badges; notification volume lowered Visual indicators remain available without an audible interruption.
Keep alerts private Lock-screen notification detail and pop-up choices An alert can be indicated without exposing its message content.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The app sends nothing at all

  • Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications and turn on Allow notifications.
  • Open Notification categories and make sure the relevant category is enabled.
  • Check whether the app has its own internal notification switch or account status.
  • Review Do not disturb and its schedules.
  • If the app is in Secure Folder, repeat the checks inside that protected area.

The alert appears but makes no sound

  • Confirm that the category is not set to silent.
  • Raise Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume > Notifications.
  • Check the phone’s sound mode and disable Mute all sounds if it is enabled.
  • Test with Do not disturb off, then add the app or contact to the permitted list if that is the cause.

The sound works, but there is no banner or badge

  • Review the app’s pop-up and badge options.
  • Check lock-screen notification display if the problem occurs only while the phone is locked.
  • Remember that an app may expose sound but not a pop-up, or a badge but not a category-specific display choice.

Only one type of message is missing

That pattern usually points to a category rather than the whole app. Enable Manage notification categories for each app under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings if your One UI version provides it, then inspect the individual category. The app may have renamed, removed, or combined categories after an update.

Alerts stop at a predictable time

Look for a Do not disturb schedule first. If no schedule explains the timing, inspect power-saving rules and background restrictions. Run a test while the phone is charging and awake, then repeat with the screen locked to identify whether background activity is the trigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why your menus may not match these steps

Samsung’s notification controls are not identical across every Galaxy. The phone model, One UI and Android release, app version, regional firmware, and the country where the handset was purchased can change both the wording and the available options. A category shown on one phone may be absent on another because the app supplies the category list.

When a path differs, use Settings search for terms such as Notifications, notification categories, Do not disturb, or Volume. Record your Galaxy model, One UI version, app name, and region when asking for help; those details determine which labels and exceptions should appear.

Final verification before relying on the setup

After changing several controls, perform a deliberate test instead of waiting for a real emergency. Send a test message from an allowed contact, trigger a notification from the app category you changed, lock the phone, and activate the Do not disturb schedule you normally use. Confirm the alert’s sound or vibration, lock-screen visibility, pop-up, and badge behavior. Then repeat with the phone in its usual power-saving state. This confirms that app permission, category behavior, volume, display settings, exceptions, and background restrictions work together rather than only in isolation.
