On Mac, you can show icons without titles, hide titles for selected Favorites, and organize which bookmarks appear. On iPhone, you can choose whether Favorites appear on the Start Page and organize bookmarks. If the site’s icon itself is wrong, that is generally controlled by the website—not by a personal image setting in Safari.
What you can change in Safari
“Change Safari Favorites icons” can mean three different things: changing how icons and titles are displayed, changing the website’s actual icon, or creating a website shortcut on an iPhone Home Screen. Safari’s documented controls cover presentation and organization, but Apple’s user guides do not describe an image picker for assigning a custom picture to one Favorite.

- Mac: Show icons only in the Favorites bar, hide or show a title for one item, rename Favorites, rearrange them, and choose the folder used for Start Page Favorites. Apple’s Mac guide to organizing Favorites explains these controls.
- iPhone: Choose whether Favorites appear on the Start Page and manage bookmarks, including renaming, moving, or reordering items where those controls are available. Apple’s iPhone Safari settings guide covers Start Page customization.
- Website icon: The site owner can provide icon assets used by browsers. That is different from selecting a personal picture for a Favorite.
- Home Screen shortcut: Adding a website to an iPhone Home Screen creates a separate shortcut, not a changed Safari Favorite.
Show icons only in the Safari Favorites bar on Mac
- Open Safari. If the Favorites bar is hidden, choose View > Show Favorites Bar.
- To hide the text for one Favorite, Control-click its title and deselect Show Title.
- To hide titles across the bar, Control-click an empty area between Favorites and choose Show Icons Only.
These settings change how the bar is displayed; they do not replace the website icon with an image of your choice. You can drag Favorites to rearrange them or Control-click an item and choose Rename to change its label. To choose a different bookmarks folder for Favorites on the Start Page, open Safari > Settings > General, then select a folder from Start Page Favorites. Customize Favorites on the iPhone Start Page
- Open Safari and create a new tab to view the Start Page.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Start Page and tap Edit.
- Turn Favorites on or off to include or omit that section. You can also choose a background image and adjust other Start Page sections.
- To organize bookmarks, open the bookmarks list and touch and hold an item to see the available editing options, such as renaming, moving, deleting, or reordering it.
Start Page background customization changes the page’s background, not the icon image for an individual Favorite. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes Start Page and bookmark controls, but not a custom-image setting for one Favorite. The exact menu route can vary with iOS version and tab layout. If a website’s icon is missing or incorrect
Safari displays website iconography supplied or associated with the site; the available Favorites controls do not let a user upload a replacement image. WebKit’s Safari 26 feature notes say that Safari 26 supports SVG icons in interface locations including favicons, and identify Favorites as a Start Page location where website icons appear. That release-specific information does not establish that older Safari versions handle icons the same way, nor does it add a user-facing custom-image picker. If you own the website, Apple’s archived developer documentation describes providing an apple-touch-icon.png at the site root or linking to an icon with an apple-touch-icon link element. This is website configuration, principally relevant to web clips added to an iOS Home Screen; it is not a personal Safari Favorites setting. Add a website icon to the iPhone Home Screen instead
If what you want is a website shortcut with an icon on the iPhone Home Screen, use Safari’s Share menu and choose Add to Home Screen. This creates a Home Screen item separately from Favorites; Apple says the resulting icon appears only on the device where it was added. Follow Apple’s instructions for bookmarking a website and adding it to the Home Screen.
