To change stations in GTA 5, tap the radio control while you are in a vehicle to cycle through stations. Hold the same control to open the radio wheel, then select a station directly. The commonly documented default is Q on PC and left on the D-pad on PlayStation and Xbox controllers. On PC, choose a station with the mouse or scroll wheel; on a controller, use the right stick. If your prompt is different, your input method or key bindings have been changed, so check Pause Menu > Settings > Controls.
The two ways to switch stations
You can change the station without opening a menu, or open the wheel when you want to jump straight to a particular station.

| Cycle stations | Tap the radio control once | The game moves to the next station in the radio list. |
| Open the radio wheel | Hold the radio control | A wheel appears while you remain in the vehicle. |
| Choose from the wheel on PC | Move the mouse or use the scroll wheel | Highlight the station you want, then release or confirm according to your input prompt. |
| Choose from the wheel on a controller | Move the right stick | Highlight the station you want, then release or confirm according to the on-screen prompt. |
The radio control is normally the same button used for both actions: a quick press cycles, while a press-and-hold opens the wheel. If a short press appears to do nothing, hold the control long enough for the wheel to appear; if neither action works, use the control-checking steps later in this guide.

PC keyboard and mouse controls
Cycle to the next station
- Enter a vehicle in Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Tap Q, the commonly documented default radio-wheel input.
- Each tap advances through the available stations.
Use a tap rather than holding the key if you simply want to move one station at a time. The station change occurs while you are driving, so you do not need to open the Pause Menu.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Open the wheel and select a station
- While inside a vehicle, press and hold Q.
- When the radio wheel appears, move the mouse to the station you want, or use the mouse scroll wheel to move the selection.
- Release the control or follow the confirmation prompt shown on your screen.
The wheel is useful when you know which station you want and do not want to tap through every intervening station. It also makes the station names and icons visible, which helps when several stations are close together in the wheel.
If Q is not your radio button
The Q mapping is a default reference, not a guarantee for every PC setup. A different keyboard layout, an alternate input method, or a custom key binding can produce a different prompt. To see the active assignment, open the Pause Menu, choose Settings, and open Controls. Check the vehicle or radio-wheel binding shown for the input device you are currently using. If you have both a keyboard and controller connected, make sure you are checking the device that supplied the last input.
PlayStation and Xbox controller controls
Cycle stations with the D-pad
- Get into a vehicle.
- Tap left on the D-pad, the commonly documented default on console controllers.
- Tap again whenever you want to advance to another station.
This mapping is used as a general controller default across the console control references, but the prompt can differ after remapping or when a different control scheme is selected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the controller radio wheel
- Press and hold left on the D-pad while you are in the vehicle.
- When the wheel appears, move the right stick toward the station you want.
- Release the radio control or use the confirmation instruction displayed by the game.
If the wheel never appears, keep the D-pad direction held instead of repeatedly tapping it. A quick press and a hold are separate inputs, so tapping several times will only cycle stations.
Find the current console binding
Open the Pause Menu and go to Settings > Controls. Rockstar’s support guidance places control settings in the Settings tab in both Story Mode and Online. Look for the active vehicle-radio assignment and the selected control scheme. If your controller is remapped, the in-game prompt is more reliable than a default-control chart.
How station selection behaves in Story Mode and GTA Online
The basic control is the same idea in both modes: use the radio control while you are in a vehicle, tap to cycle, or hold to choose from the wheel. The exact stations shown can depend on the mode, the vehicle context, and any customization available in Online. Do not assume that a station visible in one mode must appear in another.
Radio controls are vehicle controls. If you are on foot, the normal station shortcut will not give you a vehicle radio wheel because there is no vehicle radio to control. Enter a vehicle first, then try the shortcut again.

Changing stations is an in-game action rather than a separate service. You do not have to purchase an upgrade, unlock a subscription, or open an external music application before using the standard radio. The only additional setup discussed in this guide is the optional Self Radio feature for PC players who want to use their own files.
Limit the GTA Online wheel to favorite stations
GTA Online includes a Radio Station Favorites option. It lets you mark stations so that only your chosen stations populate the radio wheel. This is useful if you regularly switch among a small group and want to avoid scrolling past stations you never use.
Open the Interaction Menu
- PC: hold M.
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: hold the Touchpad.
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: hold the View button.
These are the default ways described for opening the Interaction Menu. Once it is open, find the option named Radio Station Favorites and choose the stations you want included. Rockstar can revise the surrounding Online menu layout, so use the option name rather than relying on a fixed submenu path from an older screenshot or video.
The favorites feature was added in the Los Santos Tuners update (update 1.54, dated July 20, 2021). Later Online update notes continued to reference the feature, including a 2024 fix for a radio-wheel display problem that could occur when passengers used Station Favorites. If the wheel looks wrong after changing favorites, leave and re-enter the vehicle or restart the session before assuming the stations were deleted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlay your own music on PC with Self Radio
If by “change radio stations” you mean listening to your own files, PC has a separate built-in feature called Self Radio. It is not a console feature and does not replace the normal station controls.
Add supported files
- Prepare non-DRM audio files in one of the supported formats: MP3, WMA, or M4A.
- Place the files in
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. - Instead of copying files, you may place shortcuts in that folder that point to folders containing your music.
Use files you are entitled to play and make sure the shortcuts point to locations the game can access. The documented workflow is for the PC version; consoles do not use this folder-based Self Radio setup.
Scan the folder and choose a Self Radio mode
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings > Audio.
- Use the scan controls for Self Radio so the game reads the files in the User Music folder.
- Select the playback mode that matches how you want the station to behave.
| Self Radio mode | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Sequential | Plays tracks in their folder order rather than randomizing them. |
| Shuffle | Randomizes the track order. |
| Radio | Presents the files as a radio-style station, including the mode’s radio behavior such as skipping, advertisements, and DJ banter. |
The mode changes how tracks are ordered and how the station-style features behave; it does not change the keyboard or controller shortcut used to open the radio wheel. After scanning, enter a vehicle and use the normal radio control to select Self Radio.

What to do when the shortcut does not work
Check whether you are actually in a vehicle
The station shortcut is context-sensitive. Try it after entering a car, motorcycle, or another vehicle with a radio. On foot, in a menu, or during a transition, the input can appear unresponsive because the vehicle radio is not active.
Verify the input device and remapping
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Go to Settings > Controls.
- Confirm the selected input method and control scheme.
- Locate the radio-wheel or vehicle-radio action and note its current binding.
- Restore the default or assign a new key/button if another action has taken its place.
On PC, test both the keyboard and the controller if both are connected. On a console, check whether an accessibility or custom layout has changed the D-pad assignment. The active on-screen prompt is the best indication of what the game expects after a remap.
Try the hold action instead of repeated taps
A common mistake is to tap the control while expecting the wheel. Tapping cycles to another station; holding opens the wheel. Keep the button or key depressed until the wheel is visible, then select with the mouse, scroll wheel, or right stick as appropriate.
Test outside a property
Rockstar’s February 2026 update notes mention a fix for players who could not switch stations or turn off the radio inside properties. That confirms that a property context can produce a radio-control problem even when the normal vehicle control is correct. If the shortcut fails in a garage, apartment, business, or another property, leave the property, enter a vehicle in the open world, and test again. Also make sure the game has installed the latest available update for your platform.
Check for a GTA Online menu or wheel display issue
If you use Station Favorites and the wheel is empty, incomplete, or visually incorrect, reopen the Interaction Menu and review the favorites selection. Leave and re-enter the vehicle, then reconnect to the session if necessary. A display problem does not necessarily mean the stations themselves are unavailable.
Confirm Self Radio files and scanning on PC
- Check that the files are in
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Musicor that the shortcuts target the intended folder. - Confirm that each file is MP3, WMA, or M4A and is not protected by DRM.
- Run the Self Radio scan again under Pause Menu > Settings > Audio.
- After scanning, enter a vehicle and select Self Radio from the wheel.
If regular stations work but Self Radio does not appear, the issue is usually the folder, file type, shortcut target, or scan rather than the radio-wheel key itself.

What you do not need
Changing a station is a built-in game control. You do not need to buy an accessory, subscribe to a separate music service, or install an additional radio product. The only extra setup described here is the optional PC Self Radio folder workflow for your own supported audio files.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change stations while walking around?
No. The normal radio shortcut is tied to a vehicle radio. Enter a vehicle first, then tap or hold the radio control. If you are in a menu or transition, wait until normal vehicle control returns before testing it.
Is Q definitely the PC key?
Q is the commonly documented default for the PC radio-wheel input, but it is not universal. Keyboard layouts, input methods, and custom bindings can change it. Verify the active assignment in Pause Menu > Settings > Controls.

The commonly documented controller default for both is left on the D-pad. Tap it to cycle, or hold it to open the wheel and aim with the right stick. A remapped control scheme can show a different prompt.
How do I select a station without cycling through all of them?
Hold the radio control to open the wheel. On PC, move the mouse or use the scroll wheel; on a controller, move the right stick. This lets you highlight a station directly instead of tapping repeatedly.
Can I hide stations I never use in GTA Online?
Yes. Open the Interaction Menu and choose Radio Station Favorites. Favorites limit the stations that populate the radio wheel. The default Interaction Menu controls are M on PC, Touchpad on PS4 and PS5, and View on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
When was Radio Station Favorites added?
Rockstar added the feature in the Los Santos Tuners update, version 1.54, dated July 20, 2021. Menu placement can change in later updates, so search for the option by name.
Can console players use Self Radio?
No. Rockstar’s documented User Music folder and Self Radio scan are for PC. Consoles should use the built-in stations and GTA Online favorites instead.

Why does Self Radio not appear after I add music?
Check that the files are non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files, that they are in Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music or reached through valid shortcuts, and that you ran the scan under Settings > Audio. Then enter a vehicle and look for Self Radio on the wheel.
Why does the control fail inside my property?
Rockstar’s February 2026 update notes describe a fix for players unable to switch stations or turn off the radio inside properties. Leave the property, test in a vehicle in the open world, and install the latest game update. If it works outside, the issue is contextual rather than a different radio key.
Does changing stations cost money or require an item?
No. Station switching is a built-in control. There is no accessory, subscription, or separate music product required. Only the optional PC Self Radio setup involves adding your own audio files.
