“Changing PSN region” usually means you want a different PlayStation Store storefront, different game availability, or different pricing. On PS4 and PS5, what you’re really changing is the country tied to your PSN account—not something you can freely flip like a setting.
In 2026, the reliable options fall into two buckets: update your PSN account country/region if Sony allows it for your account, or create a new PSN account in the target region and use it on your console. This guide walks you through both, including what breaks when you switch.

What PSN Region Means (and What You Can’t Really Change)
Your PSN account has a country/region that controls the store you see, the local laws and services available, and how payments are accepted. Your console hardware region usually doesn’t determine store access—your account region does.
What you generally can’t do is “transfer” an existing library to a new region account. Some items may remain usable on the new account only if they were licensed correctly, but store entitlements are region-aware.

Prerequisites Before You Change PSN Region
Before you touch anything, do these checks. They’ll save you time when options are greyed out or downloads stop.
- Know your target region (example: US, UK, Germany). Storefronts, taxes, and pricing will differ.
- Be ready to re-buy anything you can’t access after the change. Region switching often isn’t reversible without cost.
- Check PlayStation Plus status. Subscriptions are tied to the account; switching accounts may require a new subscription.
- Remove payment methods tied to your current region before attempting changes, especially if you see payment/address errors.
- De-activate your console as primary if required (more on that below).
- Record important details: which games you downloaded, what subscriptions you have, and any add-ons you purchased.
Method 1: Change Country/Region from Your PSN Account (If Available)
Sometimes Sony allows you to update your PSN account country/region. The big constraint: the option may be unavailable, greyed out, or limited based on your account history and payment setup.
Use this method only if you see a Country/Region change option in your account settings.

- On your PS4, go to Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Account Information.
- Look for Profile details and any Country/Region or Address fields.
If there’s no country/region change option, switch to Method 2 (new account). Don’t waste hours trying alternate menus.
Step 2: Check your account settings on PS5
- On your PS5, go to Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account (or Account Information, depending on your system version).
- Check for Profile and any Country/Region or Address entry.
Step 3: Update address/country, then confirm
- If you see Country/Region, select it and enter your new details.
- Remove or update payment-related entries that conflict with the new country.
- Confirm the changes and wait for the PSN profile/storefront to refresh.
- Open PlayStation Store and verify the store matches your target region.
In many cases, you’ll need to sign out and back in, or even reboot the console, for the storefront to refresh cleanly.
Method 2: Change Region by Switching to a New PSN Account
If Sony doesn’t allow region changes for your current account, your dependable path is creating a new PSN account in the target country. This is also the route that gives the most consistent store access.
Step 1: Sign out of your current account (PS4/PS5)
- On PS4: go to Settings > Account Management > Sign Out.
- On PS5: go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Sign out.
Don’t delete your old account. You’ll keep using it for any games that remain licensed to it.
Step 2: Deactivate and set primary (if you use game sharing)
If multiple people play on one console (or you use account sharing), “primary” settings matter. Changing regions can make sharing confusing if licenses stay attached to the wrong primary setup.
- Go to Settings on your console.
- Open Account Management (PS4) or Users and Accounts (PS5).
- Select Activate as Your Primary PS4/PS5.
- Follow the prompts to manage activation if your setup requires it (especially before you start using the new region account for purchases).
Step 3: Create the new PSN account in the target region
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Select Account Management (PS4) or Users and Accounts (PS5).
- Choose Sign up / Create a New Account.
- Enter your new email, set Country/Region, and complete the sign-up flow.
- Verify your email and complete any region-specific steps.
Some regions may require different verification details and payment formats. If you can’t complete sign-up, switch to another method (web account creation) or confirm the region data you entered.
Step 4: Verify the new store region
- Sign in to your new region account.
- Open PlayStation Store.
- Check for localized pricing, currency, and region-appropriate content.
Step 5: Purchase content under the new region account
To keep access predictable, buy new DLC, add-ons, and store purchases using the new PSN account that matches the region you’re targeting.
If you already downloaded games, they may still run if the old account still has rights—but store entitlements usually won’t.

What Happens to Purchases, Subscriptions, and Licenses
This is the part most people wish they knew before switching. Region changes impact store access and licensing rules.
| Item type | What usually happens after region switch | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PS Store purchases (digital games, DLC) | Typically remain licensed to the account that bought them, and region storefronts may show them differently. | Keep using the original account for that library; buy new items with the new region account. |
| PlayStation Plus | Entitlements follow the specific PSN account. | Subscribe again if you want the new region account to have Plus benefits. |
| Downloads you already installed | May still launch if you’re signed into the account that owns the license. | Test by signing into both accounts and launching the game. |
| Add-ons and expansions | Usually require the owning account’s entitlements. | Re-check in-game add-on ownership after switching accounts. |
| Payments and wallet funds | Wallet balance is tied to a specific account/region setup. | Use remaining funds on the old account or expect limited portability. |
Payments, Refunds, and Wallet Gotchas
Region switching can trigger payment errors if your current payment method doesn’t match the target country. It can also complicate refunds.
- Remove payment methods that don’t match the current account country/region.
- Be careful with wallet credit. Digital wallet funds may not be usable across regions depending on how you top up.
- Expect re-purchasing for items that become unavailable under the new region account.
- Refund windows are strict. If you bought recently, check Sony’s refund policy for your region before making any changes.
Changing Storefront Language vs Region
Some people think they need “region change” when they really only want the store in a different language. That’s not always the same thing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLanguage can often be changed from system settings, while region is governed by the PSN account country/region. If your currency and availability are wrong, language settings won’t fix it.

If the store doesn’t change or you get blocked, don’t panic. These are the most common failure points and what to try.
Problem: Country/Region option is missing or greyed out
- Try signing in again and re-check the account profile fields.
- Remove payment methods and update any address details if prompted.
- Switch to Method 2 (create a new account). Many accounts simply can’t change country after creation.
Problem: Store shows the old region even after changes
- Close and restart the Store, then reboot your PS4/PS5.
- Confirm which account is signed in. Multi-user consoles can trick you—check the profile icon.
- Check currency in the PlayStation Store header. Currency is the fastest region indicator.
Problem: Payment errors after selecting new country
- Make sure your billing country and payment method match the account region.
- Update or remove the old card/billing info, then add a method supported in the target region.
- If you can’t add a payment method, buy using store gift cards that match that region (only if supported for your account).
Problem: Games won’t show add-ons or DLC
- Launch the game while signed into the account that purchased the DLC.
- Check the in-game DLC list and the PlayStation Store “Owned” section on that account.
Safe Alternatives (When Region Change Isn’t Possible)
If you can’t change the PSN account country, or you don’t want to risk losing access, use alternatives that keep everything legitimate.

Use the correct account for the correct store
Create and keep a second PSN account for the target region. You’ll sign into that account when you want to browse and buy.
Choose region-compatible payment options
If the target region supports gift cards or specific payment methods, use those via the matching region account to avoid checkout failures.
Use language changes instead of region changes
If your goal is only localization, change system language (and any store language settings) rather than altering PSN country/region.
FAQs
Will changing PSN region permanently delete my games?
No. Your games are tied to licenses on your PSN account. If you keep the original account and sign in to it, most installed purchases should still work. The main risk is losing access to store-bought items under a different region account.
Can I move my PlayStation Plus to another region?
PlayStation Plus is linked to the specific PSN account. If you create a new region account, you’ll typically need to subscribe again on that new account to get Plus benefits.
Can I use one account on multiple PS5 or PS4 consoles with a new region?
Yes, in normal use. The account can be used on multiple consoles, but “primary” settings and console sharing/offline play rules affect downloads and usage. Configure primary/console sharing settings carefully.
Do I need to change my console’s region?
Usually, no. PSN account country/region is what determines which storefront you see. Console region changes are not the standard fix for store access problems.
Is it possible to change country/region on PSN after signing up?
Sometimes. Many accounts have the option available in settings, but it can be limited or unavailable depending on age, verification, or payment status. When you can’t change it, creating a new region account is the consistent alternative.
Bottom Line
On PS4 and PS5, “changing PSN region” is mainly about your PSN account’s country/region. If Sony lets you change it, follow the account settings flow and verify the store by currency. If that option isn’t available, create a new PSN account in the target region and use it for purchases.
