To change a prerecorded video without restarting an always-on YouTube stream, change the media source in the encoder or cloud service that is already sending the stream. Keep its YouTube connection running. YouTube Studio manages the incoming live connection; it does not provide a documented control for swapping the prerecorded file being sent.
What stays running—and what changes
Your encoder sends the video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. To replace a product video, keep that encoder-to-YouTube connection active and change the media playing inside the encoder or hosted streaming service. The switch happens upstream of YouTube, not through a file-swap action in Live Control Room.

This workflow follows YouTube’s encoder model and OBS’s media-source controls. It is not a guarantee that every encoder or hosted service can change sources without a brief audio or picture transition. Test your particular setup before relying on it unattended.
Change videos in OBS without ending the stream
For a locally operated stream, OBS can send a playlist of prerecorded files through its existing encoder connection. OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple files, playlist looping and shuffle; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. OBS’s documentation does not establish compatibility for every possible file, so check your media in advance.

- Keep the current OBS stream connected. Do not stop streaming in OBS or end the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. The stream URL and key identify the destination and authorize the encoder connection.
- Add or configure the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene used for the live output. Open the source properties and add the product video files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. Install VLC if the source is not available.
- Set playback behavior. In the VLC Video source properties, enable looping if the playlist should repeat. Use shuffle only if you want the order to vary rather than follow the playlist.
- Switch the picture being sent. Make the playlist source visible in the live scene, or otherwise switch to the scene that contains it. Keep OBS streaming while you change the media shown in the scene.
- Check the transition and output. Watch the OBS preview and YouTube’s stream preview, and listen to the outgoing audio. Confirm that the intended file is playing and that picture and sound remain acceptable. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream quality.
Replacing a single file versus using a playlist
OBS’s Media Source plays an individual supported media file. For an ordered sequence of multiple product videos, use VLC Video and its playlist controls. If you use another encoder, follow that encoder’s own source-switching controls; the YouTube connection can remain active only if the encoder continues sending a feed.
Hosted streaming as an alternative
A cloud streaming service can run prerecorded programming without depending on an OBS computer at home. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. The cited YouTube page does not establish Gyre’s current prices, feature set, service terms or transition behavior, so check those details with the provider before choosing it.

For either a local or hosted setup, find out how playlists are edited while live, what happens during a source change, what recovery controls are available, and how the service handles your content rights. YouTube’s API documentation also describes a separate broadcast going live while a 24/7 broadcast resource continues; that is API behavior, not a Live Control Room command to replace the file in an existing stream.

Troubleshoot a source change
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then check OBS again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
- The old video remains on air: Check that the playlist source is visible in the scene being sent, or switch to the scene containing it. Confirm the source is playing the intended file.
- The stream goes offline: Verify that OBS is still streaming and that the encoder’s YouTube destination and stream key are correct. Use YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance if the connection does not recover.
- There is a brief gap, frozen picture or audio change: Test the same source transition before the next unattended broadcast. YouTube and OBS document the connection and source controls, but do not promise seamless transitions for every setup.
- The output looks or sounds wrong: Check the OBS preview and YouTube preview, then monitor the live stream’s picture and audio. If the file itself is the issue, test that media in the source before using it in the playlist.
Copyright and channel considerations
Changing files without ending a stream does not change the rules that apply to the content. Use product footage, music, voiceovers and other material you have rights to stream, and check YouTube’s policies and your channel’s status. Replaying content continuously is not, by itself, a guarantee of monetization eligibility; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current monetization requirements.
