For most customers with a rented Xfinity Gateway, change the home WiFi password in the Xfinity app: open WiFi, select WiFi details, choose Edit WiFi settings, enter the new password, and save. Then reconnect devices using the new credentials. The browser-based Gateway Admin Tool is an option only for supported rented XB2 and XB3 Gateways; newer gateways, WiFi Extenders, and WiFi Intelligence setups require the app.
Here, “change” means updating the WiFi password. A factory reset is different: it erases custom Gateway settings and is a last resort, not the normal way to update a password.

Change the password in the Xfinity app
This is Xfinity’s main route for changing WiFi credentials on rented Gateways. You need to sign in with an eligible Xfinity ID; Xfinity lists Primary, Manager, and Member IDs as eligible for the WiFi tab.

- Select WiFi, then WiFi details.
- Select Edit WiFi settings.
- Enter the new WiFi password and save.
- Reconnect devices that use the network with the new password.
Xfinity says reconnecting devices after a network name or password change can take a few minutes. The available WiFi bands depend on the Gateway model. Xfinity recommends using the same network name and password for all available bands.

When the Gateway Admin Tool works
The web Admin Tool is an alternative only for rented XB2 and XB3 Gateways. Open 10.0.0.1 in a browser connected to the home network, then go to Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi to find the WiFi settings. Xfinity’s instructions limit changing the network name and password through this tool to those supported Gateway models.
If the default Admin Tool credentials have not been changed, the username is admin and the password is printed on the Gateway sticker. These are for signing in to the Admin Tool; they are not necessarily the home WiFi password.

Use the app instead if you have an XB6 or newer Gateway, WiFi Extenders, or WiFi Intelligence enabled. If the tool does not show WiFi controls, check the Gateway generation and use the app route if it is supported for your account and equipment.

Find a forgotten WiFi password
Check the app or X1 TV Box
If you can access the account, the Xfinity app’s WiFi details screen can display the WiFi name and password. An X1 TV Box can also display those credentials for viewing.

Check the Gateway label only for factory-default credentials
The Gateway label, usually on its side or bottom, can help if the original credentials have not been changed. If someone has changed the password, the label will not show the current one; use an account-authorized app or a supported management route instead.
Choose the right route for your setup

Reconnect devices after changing the password
Each device that used the old WiFi password must connect with the new one. On the device, select the home WiFi network and enter the updated password. If the device has saved the old password, forget or remove that saved network first, then join it again. Allow a few minutes for devices to reconnect.

- Confirm that you entered the new password exactly, including capitalization and symbols.
- Check whether the network name changed too; if so, select the new name rather than the old saved network.
- If the network is split across available bands, follow Xfinity’s recommendation to use the same network name and password across them.
Why the password-setting option may be missing
- Unsupported Gateway: Xfinity documents Admin Tool changes for rented XB2 and XB3 models; XB6 or newer models use the app.
- Extender or WiFi Intelligence setup: Xfinity directs these setups to the app.
- Account access: Sign in with a Primary, Manager, or Member Xfinity ID to access the WiFi tab.
- Different credentials: The Admin Tool login and the WiFi password serve different purposes. Use the WiFi settings to change the network password, not the Admin Tool sign-in screen.
Factory-reset the Gateway only as a last resort
A factory reset is not required for an ordinary WiFi password change. Xfinity’s reset guidance says it erases custom settings, including the WiFi name and password, and restores original settings. It may also remove other custom configuration.
Xfinity’s documented reset instructions for supported XB2 or XB3 equipment describe pressing the recessed reset button with a pen or unfolded paperclip. Try the app or supported Admin Tool first, and reset only if other options have not worked.
