Short answer: Microsoft has removed the old Save screenshots to OneDrive switch. To keep screenshot files in OneDrive, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup: select the OneDrive cloud icon, choose Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup, turn on Pictures, and save. Microsoft documents this change in its current screenshot guidance.
If you are trying to change where Windows Snipping Tool saves captures, use Snipping Tool > See More > Settings instead. That is a separate setting from OneDrive backup.
Which screenshot setting do you actually need?
“OneDrive screenshot settings” can refer to two different jobs. Identify the job before changing anything:
| What you want to do | Setting to change | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Back up screenshot files that are saved in Pictures | OneDrive folder backup, or Windows Backup | Whether the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive |
| Change Snipping Tool’s automatic saving or destination | Snipping Tool > See More > Settings | Snipping Tool’s save behavior and default Screenshots folder |
The former OneDrive screenshot toggle cannot be restored. The supported approach is folder backup, so the capture must end up inside a folder that OneDrive is backing up. Menu names can differ slightly between OneDrive releases and account types.

Back up screenshots through OneDrive on Windows
These steps apply to the current OneDrive app on Windows 10 and Windows 11. They change folder protection; they do not change how a screenshot program creates an image.
- Open OneDrive’s controls. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If you see more than one cloud, use the one for the Microsoft account that should receive the files.
- Open Settings. Select the OneDrive Help & Settings icon, then choose Settings.
- Open folder backup. Select Sync and backup, then Manage backup.
- Enable Pictures. Find Pictures, turn it on, and save the change. Microsoft’s folder-backup instructions are in Back up your folders with OneDrive.
Once Pictures is protected, screenshot files saved there are included in OneDrive’s normal synchronization. Existing files can take time to upload, depending on their size, connection and the number of items waiting to sync.
Verify that the backup is working
- Open the local Pictures folder and create or save a small test capture there.
- Wait for the OneDrive status indicator to finish syncing.
- Open OneDrive on the web or another signed-in device and look for the same file under Pictures.
- If the test file appears locally but not online, continue with the troubleshooting section instead of repeatedly changing the backup switch.
Use Windows Backup as an alternative path
Windows 10 and Windows 11 also expose folder protection through Windows Backup. Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, then review the folders offered for backup. Microsoft lists Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music among the folders that can be selected; the current interface is described in Back up and restore with Windows Backup.
Use either interface to manage the same practical requirement: Pictures must be included if that is where your screenshots are stored. If one interface does not show a control, check the other, then confirm that you are signed in to the intended account.

Change Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior
OneDrive does not control Snipping Tool’s save switch. Microsoft says Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to its Screenshots folder, and its own settings determine whether automatic saving is enabled and which folder is used.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu).
- Select Settings.
- Change the automatic-save option or the default Screenshots folder.
The available labels can change with the installed Snipping Tool version. Microsoft’s current walkthrough is Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
How the two settings work together
Suppose Snipping Tool saves to a folder that is inside Pictures. Snipping Tool decides whether and where the file is created; OneDrive then uploads it because Pictures is protected. If you change Snipping Tool to a location outside a backed-up folder, the capture can still be saved successfully but will not be included in OneDrive folder backup. Either select a backed-up destination or move the file into Pictures after capturing.
Windows, macOS and account differences
Windows account and app differences
OneDrive settings are tied to the account and client you opened. Personal accounts generally expose the consumer folder-backup controls. Work or school accounts may have different policies, and an administrator can restrict or manage folder backup. If Manage backup is missing, disabled or shows fewer folders than expected, do not assume the feature is broken; the account policy may be the reason.

macOS navigation
On macOS, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, select the three-dot menu, and choose Preferences. Microsoft documents the separate Windows and macOS navigation in How to access OneDrive settings. The exact backup choices depend on the OneDrive release and whether the account is personal or managed.
Personal OneDrive collections
Microsoft’s settings overview also describes personal OneDrive collections that can include Photos and videos and Screenshots. Those collection options are not the retired “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch, and they may not be available for work or school accounts. Treat the folder-backup status shown for your account as the authoritative control.
Stopping or changing folder backup safely
Turning off Pictures backup is not the same as deleting screenshots, but OneDrive must decide where the existing files should remain. Microsoft says you may be asked whether to keep files only in OneDrive or only on the PC when you stop backup.
- Keep in OneDrive: files remain in the cloud, but the local folder may no longer be protected in the same way.
- Keep on this PC: files remain locally and stop being included in that OneDrive folder backup.
Read that prompt carefully before confirming. If your goal is merely to change the Snipping Tool destination, leave Pictures backup enabled and change the destination in Snipping Tool instead. Changing the OneDrive root location is a separate procedure; use Microsoft’s default save-location guidance, not the screenshot instructions.

Troubleshooting screenshots that do not appear in OneDrive
The OneDrive cloud icon is not visible
OneDrive may not be running, may be hidden in the notification-area overflow, or may be signed out. Open OneDrive from the Start menu, sign in to the account that should store the captures, and then reopen Help & Settings > Settings.
There is no “Manage backup” option
Check that you opened the OneDrive desktop client rather than a browser tab. If the option is still absent, review Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and check whether the account is managed by an organization. Microsoft notes that some settings are unavailable for work or school accounts or controlled by an IT administrator.
Pictures is enabled, but the file is not online
- Confirm the file is actually inside the protected Pictures folder, not a similarly named folder elsewhere.
- Check the OneDrive status icon for a paused or failed sync and resume syncing if offered.
- Make sure you are viewing the same Microsoft account on the web that is signed in on the PC.
- Allow time for a large capture or a group of files to upload before testing again.
- Try a small test image. If it uploads, the original problem may be a file-specific error rather than the backup setting.
Snipping Tool keeps using the old folder
Reopen Snipping Tool > See More > Settings and verify both automatic saving and the displayed Screenshots folder. Changing OneDrive’s folder backup does not rewrite Snipping Tool’s destination. After changing the destination, create a new capture; existing files are not automatically relocated by that setting.
The capture is saved, but outside OneDrive
Locate the actual file from Snipping Tool’s save dialog or its Settings page. If the folder is outside Pictures (or another folder protected by OneDrive), either select a backed-up folder in Snipping Tool or move completed captures into Pictures. OneDrive can only back up folders that its current configuration includes.

You are unsure which account owns the folder
Work and personal OneDrive accounts can appear on the same computer. Open the cloud icon’s account details and compare the signed-in address with the account you use on OneDrive’s website. Configure backup from the account that owns the intended storage location.
A quick decision checklist
- Need cloud copies of local screenshot files? Enable Pictures under OneDrive Sync and backup > Manage backup.
- Need a different automatic-save switch or folder? Change it in Snipping Tool > See More > Settings.
- Using Windows 10 or 11 and cannot find the OneDrive control? Check Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Using a work or school account? Expect administrator-controlled options.
- Stopping backup? Read the keep-in-OneDrive versus keep-on-PC choice before accepting it.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
If your goal is to capture a website rather than save a screenshot made on your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is a different workflow from OneDrive and Snipping Tool: you send a URL and receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF response.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP response locally (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients the take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.
