You can change subtitle appearance (font, size, shadow and background) separately from the subtitle language. Use Netflix’s account settings in a browser for the widest range of appearance controls, the Netflix app’s profile settings on Android, or the playback Settings menu on supported TVs. During playback, open Audio & Subtitles whenever you want to choose a different language for the current title.
These controls are limited by the device, title, language track and country. The instructions below reflect Netflix Help Center guidance accessed October 13, 2026; labels and support can change as Netflix updates its apps.

Change subtitle size and style in a web browser
The browser method exposes Netflix’s fullest set of subtitle controls. It changes the selected profile’s appearance preferences, but the device still has to support the chosen rendering options.
- Open the Netflix Account page in a browser and sign in.
- Open Profiles, then select the profile you use for viewing.
- Choose Subtitle appearance.
- Choose the available font, size, shadow and background color options.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on the device where you will watch. If a TV or streaming device still shows the old style, open Netflix’s Settings, choose Get Help, and select Reload Netflix.
Netflix describes these controls as changing “the font, size, shadow, and background color of subtitles and closed captions.” The settings belong to the profile, so choose the correct profile before saving. Actual rendering can differ by device and subtitle language, and older devices may not display every appearance option you select. See Netflix’s current restrictions in its subtitle-appearance instructions.

What each browser control changes
- Font: changes the typeface used for subtitles when the playback device supports that choice.
- Size: makes subtitle text larger or smaller.
- Shadow: adds or changes the contrast effect around letters so text remains legible over bright scenes.
- Background color: adds a colored field behind the text; the available choices are the ones Netflix displays in your profile.
If the title is playing on a TV, changing the browser setting does not force that TV to support every web option. Connected-TV apps expose fewer appearance choices than a browser.
Change subtitle appearance on Android
Android has its own in-app path. Netflix says appearance changes made in the Android app apply only to titles played on that Android mobile device, rather than becoming a universal appearance change for every device using the profile.
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap Subtitle Appearance.
- Choose the available appearance options. The change saves automatically.
To undo the Android choices, return to Subtitle Appearance and select Restore Default Settings. If the new appearance does not show, switch to another Netflix profile, switch back to the original profile, and try again. Netflix lists that profile-switching step in its troubleshooting guidance at Subtitle and caption appearance doesn’t change.
Change subtitle appearance on a TV or streaming device
Many connected TVs and streaming players let you change a limited set of appearance options while a title is playing. The exact labels depend on the device and language.
- Start the show or movie.
- Pause playback to open the player controls.
- Choose Settings, if that option is present.
- Choose Size and Style, then select the preferred values.
- Resume playback to view the result.
If Settings does not appear in the playback controls, Netflix says that device does not support changing appearance for that language. A connected-TV app also does not provide every appearance choice available in a browser. You can still use the browser profile setting, but the TV may ignore options it cannot render.
When a TV does not pick up a saved browser change, use the Netflix home screen’s Settings > Get Help > Reload Netflix path. If the appearance still does not change, Netflix’s troubleshooting page recommends using the Get Help option on a smart-TV home screen to reload Netflix; for other device types, Netflix currently directs viewers to contact support. Details are in Netflix’s appearance troubleshooting article.
Choose the subtitle language for a title
Language selection is a playback control, not an appearance control. A title may offer several subtitle tracks, only one, or none in your preferred language.

- Open the player controls. On a phone, tablet or computer, tap or click the screen. On most TVs and streaming players, press the remote’s up or down button. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the up arrow.
- Choose Audio & Subtitles. On some TVs, language choices appear along the bottom of the screen without that icon.
- Choose the subtitle language you want.
The list is title-specific. Netflix says available languages depend on the individual title, so a language offered for one series may not be offered for another. A downloaded title shows the two most relevant languages for that download, rather than necessarily displaying every subtitle language available for streaming. Netflix documents these playback behaviors in How to use subtitles, captions, or choose audio language.
If your preferred language is missing, test the title while streaming rather than from a download, then check another episode or movie. A profile preference can help Netflix prioritize a track when it exists, but it cannot add a language that is not supplied for that title. On a TV or streaming player, check Other during playback when Netflix offers that option; it may reveal additional available choices that are not in the first list.
Why subtitles can appear when you turned them off
Some titles include subtitles for dialogue spoken in a language different from the title’s original language. Those forced-dialogue subtitles can appear even when the general subtitle track is turned off; Netflix identifies this as title behavior rather than a failed size or language setting.
Set preferred subtitle languages on your profile
You can tell Netflix which audio and subtitle languages you prefer so it can prioritize them when they are available. This does not create a subtitle track for a title that lacks one, and you can still select a different track for an individual title.

On the web
Open your Netflix account, go to Profiles, select the profile, and open its Languages settings. Choose your preferred display, audio and subtitle languages, then save if Netflix presents a save button. Netflix’s profile-language paths are listed in How to change the language on Netflix.
On a phone or tablet
In the Netflix app, open Manage Profiles, select the profile, and use Audio & Subtitles to set preferred languages. You can still override the preference for an individual title through the playback menu. Remember that this language preference is separate from Android’s subtitle-appearance menu: one chooses tracks, while the other changes how supported tracks look.
On a TV or streaming player
Use the profile’s language controls where your device exposes them. Netflix also documents an Other option during playback on TV and streaming devices for language choices that are not shown in the first list. The exact menu wording varies by device software.

Fix subtitles that are too large
When subtitles look oversized, two independent settings may be enlarging them: Netflix’s subtitle appearance setting and the device’s accessibility setting. Netflix’s guidance at Subtitles are too large recommends checking both.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the Netflix profile’s Subtitle appearance setting and reduce the subtitle size if necessary.
- Open the device’s accessibility settings and look for caption, subtitle, text-size or display-size controls.
- Reduce the device value if it is enlarging captions.
- Test another app if needed. A device-level change may affect subtitles or text in every app on that device, not only Netflix.
Keep the two scopes separate: an account or profile change controls Netflix behavior where supported, while a device accessibility change can alter the presentation of other apps as well. If you adjust both and the result is still unexpectedly large, reset one setting at a time so you can identify which control is responsible.
Fix a subtitle appearance change that did not apply
TV or streaming player still shows the old style
Reload Netflix from Settings > Get Help > Reload Netflix. Then play the title again and check the playback Settings menu. If the device has no appearance controls, it may not support the selected language or style.
Android did not update
Switch to a different Netflix profile, switch back to the profile you edited, and retry the appearance change. This is Netflix’s documented Android workaround, not a general fix for language-track availability.
Smart TV still ignores the setting
From the Netflix home screen, open the menu’s Get Help option and reload Netflix. If the issue continues, Netflix directs users of other devices to contact support through its help service.

Check whether the title is using a language track with different device support. Appearance controls can vary by subtitle language, and a title may not expose the same options as another title on the same device.
Limits you cannot fix with a menu setting
Country and primary-language restrictions
Netflix says subtitle appearance is unavailable in some countries where Arabic or Hebrew is a primary language, even when the profile itself uses another language. This is a service restriction, not an indication that your saved font or size choice is wrong.

Older hardware
Some older devices do not render all selected appearance options. If the browser profile shows the setting but the TV or player does not, the playback hardware or app may be the limiting factor.
Catalog and title differences
Subtitle tracks are supplied per title. Netflix therefore cannot show a language that is not present for that title, and downloaded viewing can show only the two most relevant languages selected for the download.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Language and audio preference behavior
Subtitle language selection is immediate for the title you are watching. Audio preferences have an additional Netflix-documented behavior: if an audio choice keeps resetting, play a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes so Netflix can save the preferred audio language for future viewing. That advice concerns audio preferences and should not be treated as a universal solution for subtitle appearance or every subtitle-language problem.
For the most reliable test, use a title that clearly offers the language you want, change the track from Audio & Subtitles, and then verify the profile’s language preferences separately. This distinguishes a missing title track from a profile-setting problem.
A practical order for changing Netflix subtitles
- Decide what you are changing: use appearance controls for size and style; use Audio & Subtitles for language.
- For the broadest appearance controls, edit the profile in a browser and save the change.
- If you watch on Android only, use the Android profile path and remember its device-specific scope.
- If you watch on a TV, check playback Settings for Size and Style; absence of that menu means the device or language does not support the control.
- For a language change, select the track during playback and confirm that the title actually offers it.
- If text is unexpectedly huge, inspect device accessibility settings as well as Netflix’s profile setting.
- Reload Netflix after a saved change fails to appear, then use Netflix’s support route if the device still does not update.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Netflix subtitle font directly on my TV?
Only if the TV or streaming player exposes playback Settings and a Size and Style control. Connected-TV apps offer fewer choices than a browser. If Settings is missing, that device does not support appearance changes for the selected subtitle language. Edit the profile in a browser for the widest controls, then reload Netflix on the TV.
Why did my browser subtitle change not appear on my television?
The TV app may not support the selected font, shadow, background or size, or it may still have the previous Netflix session cached. From the TV’s Netflix home screen, open Settings > Get Help > Reload Netflix. Older devices and some subtitle languages may also render fewer options than the browser.
Best Value
Does changing subtitle appearance on Android change Netflix everywhere?
No. Netflix says appearance changes made through the Android app apply only to titles played on that Android mobile device. Other TVs, computers and streaming players can use their own supported settings. For broader profile-level appearance controls, use Netflix’s account page in a browser.
Why are Netflix subtitles still too large after I reduce the size?
Check both Netflix’s profile subtitle size and the device’s accessibility settings. A phone, TV or streaming device may enlarge captions independently, and that device-level change can affect other apps too. Reduce the relevant accessibility text, caption or display-size setting, then test Netflix again.
Why is my preferred subtitle language missing?
Netflix lists only languages supplied for the individual title. A downloaded title shows the two most relevant languages for that download, which may be fewer than the streaming list. Check the title while streaming, try another episode, and use Other during playback on devices that provide that option.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why do subtitles appear even though I turned them off?
Some titles show subtitles for dialogue spoken in a language different from the title’s original language. These forced-dialogue subtitles can remain visible with the general subtitle track turned off. It is title behavior, not necessarily a problem with your language or appearance setting.
Do I need to save Android subtitle changes?
No. In the Android Netflix app, changes made under My Netflix > profile name > Manage Profiles > profile > Subtitle Appearance save automatically. To undo them, return to that menu and choose Restore Default Settings.
Where should Apple device users change subtitle appearance?
Netflix refers Apple-device viewers to Apple Support for appearance instructions. The available controls depend on the Apple operating-system version and playback device, so the browser and TV paths may not match every Apple interface.
The Bottom Line
Use a browser profile setting for the widest subtitle appearance control, Android’s profile menu for Android-only playback, and playback Audio & Subtitles to choose a language for a title. Device support, title availability, downloads, country restrictions and accessibility settings can all limit the result.
