How to Change Nest Doorbell Sounds in the Google Home App—and What to Know About Previewing Them

You can change an available Nest Doorbell theme or chime sound from the doorbell’s settings in Google Home. Google’s help instructions explain how to change a sound but do not document a dedicated preview button, so whether you can audition a sound before applying it depends on the controls shown in your app. If there is no preview control, select the sound and test the doorbell.

Change the doorbell sound in Google Home

  1. Open the Google Home app and select your Nest Doorbell tile.
  2. Open the device settings, then look for the doorbell theme or sound controls. Choose an available theme or chime sound and follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. If your app offers a preview control, use the one shown on your device. Google’s instructions reviewed here do not specify a preview button or a universal preview workflow. Without one, apply the sound and test the doorbell.

Google says users can change a doorbell theme or set a different chime sound in the app’s doorbell settings. Exact labels and available options can vary by doorbell generation, operating system, and app version. Google’s Nest camera and doorbell settings guide notes that the Nest app is not compatible with newer camera and doorbell models; use Google Home for those devices.

Do you mean the visitor sound or the indoor chime?

“Ringtone” can mean two different things. The visitor-facing theme is the sound associated with a doorbell press; the indoor chime is what rings inside your home. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.

  • Visitor-facing theme or sound: This is the doorbell sound visitors hear. Seasonal themes may be offered around some holidays. Google says they can also play through enabled visitor announcements and revert automatically to the default after the holiday. Availability depends on what Google offers and what appears for your device. Google’s settings guide describes this behavior.
  • Indoor chime: This is the household chime. Its on/off setting is separate from the visitor-facing theme. Digital-chime duration controls apply only to wired Nest Doorbells connected to the home’s doorbell system; battery-powered doorbells cannot use a digital chime. Google’s audio settings guide explains these limits and controls.

Mute the indoor chime or use Quiet Time

If your goal is to stop the chime inside rather than change the doorbell’s sound, use the indoor-chime controls in Google Home. Quiet Time is a temporary mute: while it is active, the indoor chime and visitor announcements are off, though the app can still notify household members that someone is at the door. To keep the indoor chime off beyond Quiet Time, switch it off in the chime settings. Google documents both controls here.

Why you may not be able to change a particular Nest sound

Not every sound from a Nest camera or doorbell is a selectable ringtone. Google says most sounds that indicate device events cannot be changed in settings. Depending on the model, you may be able to turn off the Talk and Listen tone, but that is a separate setting from choosing a doorbell theme. Google’s lights and sounds guide describes model-dependent options.
