Change Narrator’s punctuation level with a keyboard shortcut

Start Narrator if it is not already running. By default, either Caps Lock or Insert can act as the Narrator key.

Press the Narrator key + Alt + [ or the Narrator key + Alt + ]. The brackets cycle through punctuation levels. Listen to Narrator announce the current level as you move through the choices.

Stop when Narrator announces Math. Microsoft describes this level as: “Hear most mathematical symbols.”

The direction each bracket cycles depends on where you are in the available sequence; use whichever direction reaches the level you want.
What the five punctuation levels do
Microsoft documents five choices. They vary in how much punctuation and symbol detail Narrator speaks.

| Default | Little or no punctuation. |
| Math | Most mathematical symbols. |
| Some | Most conversational punctuation. |
| Most | Additional symbols, including parentheses. |
| All | Every punctuation mark and special symbol. |
Choose Math when mathematical notation is your priority. Use All if you need Narrator to speak every punctuation mark and special symbol; for less detail, try Default or Some.
Why “Clear,” “Simple,” and “Literal” are not the setting names
Those words may describe how someone wants math read aloud, but Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 choices are Default, Math, Some, Most, and All. The setting that controls math symbols is called a punctuation reading level, not a speech-style selector with Clear, Simple, or Literal options.

Math reading, verbosity, and voice are different settings
Punctuation level controls which punctuation and mathematical symbols Narrator announces. Verbosity controls other spoken detail, such as information about controls and text characteristics. Its shortcuts are Narrator + V and Narrator + Shift + V; changing verbosity is not the way to select Math.
Voice is separate as well. Narrator uses an installed text-to-speech voice for another language when one is available, or the default voice if that language’s voice is not installed. Microsoft’s guide does not say that voice selection changes the Math punctuation level.

If the shortcut does not change the level

Check that Narrator is running and that you are using the configured Narrator key. Caps Lock and Insert are the defaults, but your device may be customized.

Try the other bracket key: Narrator + Alt + [ or Narrator + Alt + ]. Listen for Narrator to announce a different level.

If neither combination works, check your keyboard layout and Narrator key configuration. Microsoft’s guidance identifies the default keys but does not cover every customized mapping or layout.
