To change how fast the pointer moves, open Settings from the clock area, choose Device, then open Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse. Adjust Touchpad speed or Mouse speed. Scroll direction, scroll behavior, and cursor visibility use separate controls, so changing pointer speed will not change any of those settings.
Which Chromebook setting fixes the problem?
Chromebooks separate pointer movement, scrolling, and cursor visibility into different controls. Use this guide to choose the setting before you start changing sliders.

| What you want to change | Setting to use | Where to find it | What it affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pointer moves too slowly or too quickly | Touchpad speed or Mouse speed | Settings > Device > Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse | How far the pointer travels when you move the touchpad or mouse |
| Touchpad scrolls in the wrong direction | Reverse | Settings > Device > Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse | Whether swiping up moves the page up or down |
| External-mouse scrolling feels uncontrolled | Controlled scrolling | Settings > Device > Mouse | Whether ChromeOS provides a controllable mouse-scroll speed |
| Cursor is difficult to see | Cursor size, color, or highlighting | Settings > Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad | Cursor visibility, not pointer movement speed |
The names and grouping can differ between ChromeOS versions and Chromebook models. If you do not see an item exactly as written, use the Settings search field and search for “mouse,” “touchpad,” or “cursor.” Google’s settings guide explains that you can open Settings and find controls through the side panel or search bar: Manage Chromebook settings.

Change pointer speed for the touchpad or a mouse
Pointer speed controls movement across the screen. It does not make pages scroll faster, enlarge the pointer, or change the direction of a swipe.
Adjust the touchpad speed
- Open Settings > Device > Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse.
- Find Touchpad speed.
- Move the slider left for slower movement or right for faster movement.
- Move your finger across the touchpad and test the pointer immediately. Make small changes until you can reach the far edge of the display without repeated swipes, while still stopping accurately on small targets.
Google documents this control as a slider that changes how quickly the pointer moves: Use your Chromebook touchpad. A setting that feels comfortable for a compact laptop may feel too fast on a large external display, so tune it while using the screen arrangement and desk position you normally use.
Adjust the speed of an external mouse
- Connect the mouse through USB or Bluetooth and wait for ChromeOS to recognize it.
- Open Settings > Device > Mouse or Touchpad and mouse.
- Find Mouse speed.
- Move the slider, then test both slow, precise movements and a quick sweep across the screen.
The pointer-speed slider applies to the corresponding input device. If you have both a touchpad and mouse controls, adjust each one independently; changing the mouse value does not necessarily change the touchpad value.
Reverse the touchpad scrolling direction
The Reverse option changes the relationship between your finger motion and page motion. With Reverse off, Google describes swiping up as moving the page up. Turning Reverse on reverses that behavior.

- Open Settings.
- Select Device, then Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse.
- Find Reverse.
- Turn the switch on or off, then test it in a long web page or document.
This option concerns touchpad scrolling. It is separate from pointer speed and from the mouse-specific Controlled scrolling option. If the direction feels wrong only with a physical mouse wheel, use the mouse settings instead of changing Reverse.
Control scrolling with an external mouse
For a connected mouse, ChromeOS provides a Mouse scrolling area under Settings > Device > Mouse. Turn Controlled scrolling on or off. Google notes that scroll speed can be controlled when this option is on.
- Connect the mouse and open Settings > Device > Mouse.
- Scroll to Mouse scrolling.
- Turn Controlled scrolling on if you want ChromeOS’s scroll-speed control.
- Adjust the available scroll-speed control, then test it in a page with enough content to see the difference.
- Turn Controlled scrolling off if the resulting behavior is less predictable with your mouse or if you prefer its default wheel response.
The exact controls shown can depend on ChromeOS version and the connected device. A mouse can work without changing this setting; these controls refine its behavior after ChromeOS detects it.

A pointer that is hard to find needs an accessibility change, not a faster movement setting. ChromeOS places these options under Settings > Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad.

- Smooth, precise and affordable wireless optical 3-button mouse with USB nano receiver for laptop, desktop and netbook PCs
- 2.4 GHz wireless (not Bluetooth) provides a powerful, reliable connection
- Nano-receiver stays in the PC USB port or stows conveniently inside the wireless mouse when not in use (note: Receiver is stored within the mouse from production and needs to be removed upon setup)
- Compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10
- Easy installation - refer to user manual for instructions
Increase cursor size or change its appearance
- Open Settings and select Accessibility.
- Open Cursor and touchpad.
- Choose the available cursor-size or cursor-color option and select a more visible setting.
- Move the pointer over both light and dark areas to check that the choice works across the apps and websites you use.
Highlight the cursor
Enable cursor highlighting when you regularly lose track of the pointer during presentations, screen sharing, or large-screen use. Highlighting changes how the cursor is displayed; it does not alter pointer speed or scrolling.
Other cursor and touchpad options
The same accessibility area may include automatic clicking, tap dragging, and other mouse or touchpad features. The available list can vary by ChromeOS release and device. If an option is absent, search Settings for its name or check whether your administrator manages accessibility controls. Google’s references are Turn on Chromebook accessibility features and Use accessibility features in Chromebook.
Touchpad versus external mouse: choose the right control
A Chromebook can use its built-in touchpad, a USB mouse, or a Bluetooth mouse. The input device determines which movement and scrolling controls matter.

| Input device | Movement control | Scroll-direction control | Scroll-speed behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in touchpad | Touchpad speed | Reverse | Use the touchpad’s normal gesture behavior |
| USB or Bluetooth mouse | Mouse speed | Mouse scrolling options | Controlled scrolling can expose scroll-speed control when enabled |
| Both connected | Adjust each device’s available slider | Test each device separately | Mouse options do not replace touchpad gesture settings |
You do not need to buy another mouse to change these settings. An external USB or Bluetooth mouse is optional hardware for people who prefer a different shape, wheel, buttons, or tracking surface. Compatibility depends on the device and connection method; the Chromebook settings procedure itself does not require a particular model.

Optional: stop the touchpad from interfering with a mouse
If your palm moves the pointer while you type, look in the touchpad or mouse settings for an option that disables or limits the touchpad while a mouse is connected. The exact wording is not identical on every Chromebook. Google also documents a separate method for switching off a Chromebook touchpad: Switch off your Chromebook touchpad.
Only disable the touchpad if you have a working mouse or another pointing method available. Otherwise, you can be left without a pointer if the mouse disconnects or its battery runs out.

Consider managed-device restrictions
On a school or work Chromebook, an administrator can restrict some settings. If a control appears but cannot be changed, or if search returns no result, contact the administrator rather than trying to install a utility. ChromeOS settings are designed to work without third-party mouse software.
Troubleshoot pointer and scrolling changes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The pointer is still too fast after changing a slider | The other input device’s slider was changed | Move the touchpad while changing Touchpad speed, then test the mouse separately while changing Mouse speed. |
| Pages move the opposite way from what you expect | Reverse is enabled or disabled for your preference | Change Reverse under the touchpad settings and test with a long page. |
| The mouse wheel is too slow or too quick | Controlled scrolling is off, or its control has not been adjusted | Open Mouse scrolling, turn Controlled scrolling on, and test the available speed control. |
| The cursor moves fine but disappears visually | Visibility problem, not movement speed | Use Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad to increase size, change color, or enable highlighting. |
| No mouse settings appear | The mouse is not detected or the menu is combined | Reconnect the USB or Bluetooth mouse, then search Settings for “mouse.” |
| The setting is missing or locked | ChromeOS version, device capability, or administrator policy | Search the exact term, check the combined Touchpad and mouse page, and ask the device administrator if it is managed. |
| The touchpad stops responding after it was disabled | The disable-touchpad option was used without a backup pointer | Reconnect or recharge the mouse, or use the documented touchpad re-enable route on the Chromebook. |
A practical way to tune the settings
Changing several controls at once makes it difficult to know which one solved the problem. Tune them in this order:
- Choose the input device you use most and set its pointer-speed slider.
- Test accuracy by selecting small buttons, dragging a window, and moving from one side of the display to the other.
- Set touchpad Reverse or mouse scrolling behavior, depending on the device that feels wrong.
- Use a long web page to test scrolling, then a short page or menu to check that you can stop at the intended position.
- Change cursor size, color, or highlighting only if visibility remains a problem.
- Write down the settings that feel comfortable before experimenting further, especially on a shared or managed Chromebook.
This sequence keeps movement, scrolling, and visibility as separate decisions. It also gives you a clear rollback path: return to the same control and move the slider or switch back to its previous position.

Google’s Chromebook Help pages establish the locations and purposes of the speed sliders, Reverse, Controlled scrolling, and cursor-accessibility controls. They do not publish a Chromebook-by-Chromebook or ChromeOS-version-by-version matrix showing identical labels and options. Therefore, a missing label is not proof that your device cannot adjust a setting; use Settings search and the closest device page first.
The controls also do not provide a universal numerical speed scale. The sliders are relative controls, so the useful result is the position that gives you accurate movement on your particular display, desk, and input device.
