The tricky part is that Teams isn’t always the thing choosing the folder. Depending on your file type, the Teams version (new Teams vs classic), and whether the download is initiated inside the Teams app or via a web viewer, your browser’s download settings often control the destination.

What Microsoft Teams Download Location Actually Means
Teams uses multiple “download paths,” and which one matters depends on what you’re downloading.

So the right fix depends on where you’re seeing the incorrect folder.
Before You Change Anything (Prerequisites)
- Confirm your Teams version: “new Teams” usually shows a more modern layout. Classic Teams and new Teams may expose different settings.
- Know your OS: Windows 10/11 and macOS behave differently for file downloads.
- Pick the destination first: For example, create a folder like
D:\Teams Downloads(Windows) or~/Documents/Teams Downloads(macOS) so you can select it consistently.
Change Download Location in Microsoft Teams (Desktop App)
Start with Teams settings. On some builds, Teams exposes a “download location” for attachments/files. If that option isn’t present, use browser defaults (next section).
Windows (new Teams and classic Teams differences)
Follow this path in the Teams desktop app. Labels vary slightly by build, but the goal is to find a file downloads location setting.

- Select your profile icon (top-right), then choose Settings.
- Look for a section named Files or Downloads.
- If you see Download location (or similar), click Change (or the folder icon).
- Choose your target folder (example:
D:\Teams Downloads), then confirm. - Send a test download (open any file you can download from chat) and verify the new destination.
If you don’t see any download location option under Settings, don’t keep hunting in Teams. Use browser defaults, because the file viewer triggers the save dialog using browser/OS rules.

macOS
On macOS, Teams often defers downloads to the OS and/or browser. Still, check for a Teams-side option first.
- Open Microsoft Teams (desktop).
- Click your profile icon, then choose Settings.
- Check for Files or Downloads settings.
- If there’s a Download location or Save files to option, set it to
~/Documents/Teams Downloadsor another folder. - Test by downloading an attachment from a chat.
If there’s no setting to change the folder, your browser’s downloads settings (Safari/Chrome/Firefox) will control where downloads land.
If Teams Has No Download-Location Setting: Use Your Browser Defaults
Many Teams downloads are effectively “web downloads.” Even if you click the file inside Teams, the content often passes through a browser engine for preview and saving. Changing your browser’s default download directory usually fixes the problem immediately.

Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Settings (click … top-right > Settings).
- In the left sidebar, select Downloads.
- Under Location, choose Change.
- Select your folder (example:
D:\Teams Downloads), then confirm. - Optional: turn off prompts if you want fully automatic downloads.
Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to Settings (click … top-right > Settings).
- Search for Downloads in the settings search bar.
- Under Downloads, find Location.
- Click Change and pick your target folder.
- Save the setting and test a Teams attachment download.
Safari (macOS)
- Open Safari.
- Go to Safari menu > Settings (or Preferences).
- Click the General tab.
- Find File download location.
- Select a folder (or choose Other…), then close Settings.
Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- Go to Settings.
- In the left sidebar, select General.
- Scroll to Files and Applications.
- Find Downloads and set Save files to to your desired folder.
- Test a Teams download.
Change Where Teams Files Land (OneDrive/SharePoint + Browser Save)
Teams files are commonly stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. Your “download location” often depends on how you’re downloading the file from that storage experience.

When you click a file in Chat or a meeting
Do this for the fastest confirmation:
- Open the chat or meeting where the file lives.
- Hover the file and choose Download (if you see it) or click the file.
- If a save dialog appears, pick your folder and choose Set as default if your browser offers it.
If the save dialog doesn’t appear and downloads go to the old folder, your browser default still points there—update it using the steps above.
When you download from a SharePoint/OneDrive page
Some Teams downloads send you through a web page. In that case, use the web page’s download behavior:
- Open the file in Teams until you see the viewer or the file opens in a browser tab.
- Use the page’s Download button.
- If your browser shows a folder picker for the first download, select your target folder.
- Then verify your browser settings so future downloads match automatically.
Change the Microsoft Teams Installer Download Location
If the issue you’re seeing is that the Teams installer downloads to the wrong folder, Teams settings won’t help. You must change your browser download settings for the installer download flow.

Windows (download through a browser)
- Open your browser (Edge or Chrome).
- Set the Downloads location (follow the Edge/Chrome steps in the browser section).
- Download Microsoft Teams from the official Microsoft download page you used originally.
- Verify the installer lands in your chosen folder (commonly
Downloadsunless you changed it).
macOS (download through a browser)
- Set Safari/Chrome/Firefox download location to your target folder.
- Download the Teams installer (.pkg or .dmg depending on what’s offered in your flow).
- Verify the file appears in the expected folder before installing.
Troubleshooting: Downloads Still Go to the Wrong Folder
If you changed a setting and nothing changed, one of the layers above is still controlling the destination.

Teams is using a different process than you expect
Some Teams UI elements open files using an embedded viewer tied to your browser settings. Confirm the pathway by doing one download and observing whether your browser’s download bar appears.
- If you see your browser download behavior (download bar, download list), update browser defaults.
- If you only see a Windows/macOS save dialog, verify the selected folder there and ensure you’re not always clicking a previous default.
Browser keeps overriding your choice
Browsers can remember per-site download directories or keep the last folder for a specific domain. Fix by:
- Re-check Downloads settings in your browser.
- Try a different file from a different chat/meeting to rule out a one-site rule.
Permissions, downloads folders, or controlled folders
On Windows, some systems block writing to certain locations due to security controls. If your target folder is on a protected drive or requires admin rights, Downloads may silently fall back.

Corporate policies lock settings
In managed environments, IT can enforce download locations, browser policies, or Teams behavior. If you’re using a work-managed Windows device, check with your admin if you see disabled settings (greyed-out options) in browser or OS download settings.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Changing Teams settings but not updating your browser: If the download route is browser-based, Teams won’t control the folder.
- Pointing to a folder you can’t write to: Always confirm permissions before you rely on the new location.
- Testing with one file only: Some file types (ZIP vs PDF vs recording) may follow different download pathways.
- Assuming “cache” equals “downloads”: Cache location is different from saved files. You want the saved destination.
FAQs
Can I change the download location for Teams attachments on Windows?
Sometimes yes, if your Teams build exposes a setting under Settings > Files/Downloads. If you don’t see it, change your browser’s Downloads folder instead—Teams often saves through the browser pipeline.
Why does Teams keep downloading to the default Downloads folder even after I changed it?
Most commonly, your browser’s default download location still points to the old folder, or Teams is using a different tab/process that respects browser settings per-site. Update the browser’s downloads location, then test again with multiple files.
Does changing the download location affect where OneDrive/SharePoint stores the file?
No. OneDrive/SharePoint is the source storage. “Download location” only affects where your computer saves the copy you downloaded.

Recordings are usually served from a storage page and downloaded via the browser. Set your browser download folder and test using a recording link from a meeting.
