How to Change Magic Mouse Tracking Speed, Scrolling, and Gestures on Mac

Magic Mouse controls are split across several macOS panels. Change pointer movement in System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click, change scrolling speed in System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options, change scroll direction back in Mouse > Point & Click, and manage gestures from System Settings > Mouse. These settings affect different behaviors, so changing the tracking slider will not make pages scroll faster.

Connect the mouse before opening settings. Apple says Mouse or Trackpad settings require a connected wireless mouse or trackpad, unless you are using a Mac with a built-in trackpad. The instructions below apply to current macOS System Settings labels; some gesture choices vary by Mac and mouse model.

Which Magic Mouse setting should you change?

What feels wrong Control to change Location in macOS What it changes
The pointer crosses the screen too slowly or quickly Tracking speed System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click How far the pointer moves when you move the mouse
Pages move too slowly or quickly when you scroll Scroll speed System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options How quickly content moves during scrolling
Scrolling feels backward Natural scrolling System Settings > Mouse > Point & Click The direction content moves relative to your finger
A swipe, click, or double-tap does something unwanted Gesture settings System Settings > Mouse Which recognized actions are enabled and what they do
Double-clicks are missed or trigger too easily Double-click speed System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control How close together two clicks must be

Apple’s Mouse settings guide describes these controls and their available options. Use the behavior in the first column to choose the right adjustment instead of moving every slider at once.

For example, a cursor that reaches the edge of a display too quickly needs Tracking speed or Pointer acceleration changed. A web page that moves several screens with one finger needs Scroll speed changed. If the page moves the expected distance but in the opposite direction, change Natural scrolling instead. Separating those symptoms prevents a setting change from creating a second problem.

Apple Magic Mouse - White Multi-Touch Surface
  • Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
  • It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

Before changing anything, connect the Magic Mouse

Turn on the Magic Mouse and connect it to the Mac. A wireless mouse must be connected for its mouse settings to appear. Apple’s exact requirement is: “To change Mouse or Trackpad settings, you must have a wireless mouse or trackpad connected with your Mac, or be using a Mac with a built-in trackpad.” You can read the requirement in Apple’s tracking, double-click, and scrolling instructions.

If the Mouse pane does not show the controls described here, first confirm that the Magic Mouse is connected rather than relying on the Mac’s built-in trackpad. No special app or accessory is required to change these preferences. Connect the mouse before opening System Settings and keep it connected while testing, because the controls shown can be based on the currently connected pointing device.

Use the model you normally work with when evaluating a change. A setting that feels comfortable on a small laptop display may feel different on a large or multiple-display desktop because the pointer has farther to travel. Likewise, a gesture may be listed on one Mac but not another; that difference does not necessarily indicate a fault.

Change Magic Mouse pointer tracking speed

Tracking speed controls pointer movement, not scrolling. A higher slider position makes the pointer cover more screen distance for the same physical mouse movement; a lower position gives you more hand travel and finer large movements.

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Mouse in the sidebar.
  3. Choose Point & Click.
  4. Under Tracking speed, drag the slider.
  5. Move the pointer around the screen while adjusting it, then stop when ordinary movements feel controllable.

Apple provides a slider rather than a published numeric speed scale. There is therefore no official “best” position or universal value to copy. Set it by moving the pointer across the distances you use most—such as from a document to the sidebar—and judge the result immediately.

Make a first adjustment with broad movements: move from the center of the display to a corner, then to a frequently used toolbar or sidebar. Follow that with small movements over a button or text insertion point. If broad travel is comfortable but small targets are difficult, reduce the speed slightly or investigate acceleration rather than repeatedly changing unrelated scroll settings.

What pointer acceleration does

macOS can make the pointer travel farther when you move the mouse quickly while retaining more precision for slow movements. This behavior is pointer acceleration, not the same thing as the Tracking speed slider.

  1. Open System Settings > Mouse.
  2. Open the Advanced section.
  3. Turn Pointer acceleration off if you want movement to feel more consistent regardless of how quickly you move the mouse.

Leave acceleration on if you prefer to reach the opposite side of a large display with a short, fast swipe while still making precise small movements. Turn it off only when that changing response is the source of the problem; it does not replace choosing a comfortable tracking-speed position.

Acceleration is worth checking when the cursor seems slow during careful work but suddenly jumps farther during a quick movement. With acceleration enabled, the same physical distance can produce different pointer distances depending on how quickly the mouse moves. With it disabled, movement feels more uniform, although reaching a distant part of the screen can require more hand travel.

Make Magic Mouse scrolling faster or slower

Scroll speed is in Accessibility rather than the main Mouse pane. It changes how rapidly window content moves when you scroll and does not change pointer travel.

Apple Magic Mouse - Black Multi-Touch Surface
  • Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
  • It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
  1. Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility in the sidebar.
  3. Select Pointer Control.
  4. Click Mouse Options.
  5. Adjust the Scroll speed slider.
  6. Test it in a long page or document, then make smaller adjustments until one or two finger movements produce the amount of movement you expect.

If the pointer itself feels too fast, return to the Tracking speed control instead. The two sliders are independent, so moving Scroll speed will not correct a cursor that crosses the screen too quickly.

Use a consistent test while adjusting. A long web page, document, or list makes it easier to tell whether a short finger movement moves only a little content or several screens. Make one small change, scroll in the same direction again, and stop when you can move through content without repeatedly correcting your hand position. The slider controls the rate of content movement; it does not change which gestures are enabled.

Reverse or restore the scrolling direction

Natural scrolling controls direction, not speed. When it is enabled, content follows the direction of your finger movement in the way Apple calls “natural” scrolling. If pages move opposite to the direction you expect, change this checkbox.

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Choose Mouse.
  3. Open Point & Click.
  4. Turn Natural scrolling on or off.

Scroll speed and Natural scrolling solve different complaints: use the speed slider when content moves too far or not far enough, and use the direction checkbox when it moves the wrong way.

After changing direction, test both a vertical scroll and a horizontal page swipe. The direction preference is separate from the gesture actions themselves, so changing it should not be used as a way to disable Mission Control, page navigation, or full-screen app switching.

Turn Magic Mouse gestures on, off, or to another action

Open System Settings > Mouse and review the controls under Point & Click and More Gestures. Where macOS offers a switch, turn a gesture off to disable it. Where it offers a menu, select the available action you want. Apple notes that the controls shown can differ according to the connected mouse and Mac, so an option in a guide or on another Mac may not appear on yours.

Change one gesture at a time and test it in the application where the unwanted action occurred. A gesture can be recognized only when the correct finger count, tap, or swipe is used; a normal click or pointer movement will not substitute for it. If an action is missing from the panel, verify the mouse connection and model before assuming that a setting is hidden.

Gestures Apple documents for Magic Mouse

  • Secondary click: Click the right side of the mouse for a contextual menu when secondary click is enabled.
  • Scrolling: Move one finger across the surface to scroll. Magic Mouse supports scrolling in any direction, including 360-degree scrolling.
  • Smart Zoom: Double-tap with one finger to zoom in or out when the gesture is enabled.
  • Mission Control: Double-tap with two fingers to open Mission Control when that option is available.
  • Full-screen apps: Swipe horizontally with two fingers to move between full-screen apps.
  • Pages: Swipe horizontally with one finger to move between pages.

These actions are independent of pointer speed. Disabling a swipe does not slow scrolling, and changing Scroll speed does not remove a double-tap or page-swipe action.

Secondary click is a click-side preference, while Smart Zoom and Mission Control depend on taps with a specified number of fingers. Horizontal swipes have two separate uses: a two-finger swipe changes full-screen apps, while a one-finger swipe can move between pages. If the wrong action is occurring, check both the gesture name and the finger movement rather than changing Tracking speed.

Zooming the screen with a Control-modified scroll

Apple’s Magic Mouse guide also describes zooming the screen by holding the Control key while scrolling, provided the feature is enabled in Accessibility > Zoom. This is an accessibility zoom command, not the ordinary page-scroll speed setting. If Control-scroll zooms the entire display when you did not intend it to, inspect the Zoom settings rather than changing the Mouse tracking slider.

Because screen zoom and page scrolling can use the same physical scroll movement, check whether the Control key is being held when diagnosing an unexpected result. Turning the ordinary Scroll speed slider up or down will not remove a Control-modified zoom command.

USB-C Magic Mouse gesture compatibility

Apple’s published gesture list says the gestures for Magic Mouse models with a USB-C port require macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. If you have a USB-C model and expected gestures are missing, verify that the Mac meets that version requirement before treating the absence as a hardware fault. Even on a compatible system, the exact controls shown can depend on the Mac and the connected mouse.

The compatibility note concerns Apple’s listed gestures; it does not change where the Tracking speed or Scroll speed controls are located. If a USB-C mouse is connected but gesture choices remain limited, confirm the macOS version and then review the available Point & Click and More Gestures sections. Do not assume that every gesture listed for another Magic Mouse model must appear on yours.

Adjust double-click speed separately

If a file opens only after unusually rapid clicks, or ordinary double-clicks open items too easily, adjust the separate double-click control:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Select Pointer Control.
  4. Adjust Double-click speed.

This setting changes the time macOS allows between the two clicks. It does not alter pointer tracking, page scrolling, Natural scrolling, or gestures.

Test the new timing on an item that normally requires a double-click, then test a single click on a nearby control. If pointer movement is also wrong, adjust Tracking speed separately; changing double-click timing cannot make the pointer more or less responsive.

Diagnose a Magic Mouse that is jittery, lagging, or unresponsive

A pointer that is consistently too fast or slow needs a setting change. A pointer that jumps, pauses, or ignores movement needs troubleshooting. Use the symptom rather than repeatedly moving the Tracking speed slider.

Symptom First check Why
Pointer moves smoothly but covers the wrong distance Tracking speed, then Pointer acceleration These controls change the movement response.
Content moves the wrong way Natural scrolling Direction is independent of speed.
Content moves too far or too little Scroll speed under Mouse Options The page-movement rate is controlled in Accessibility.
Gestures are absent Connected mouse, model, and macOS compatibility Available choices vary, and USB-C model gestures require Sequoia 15.1 or later.
Pointer jumps, skips, or responds slowly Sensor cleanliness and Bluetooth interference Erratic response is not corrected by a speed slider.

Clean the sensor

Apple recommends cleaning the sensor on the underside of the mouse with a cloth or compressed air. If you use compressed air, do not invert the can while spraying. A dirty sensor can produce tracking that skips or behaves inconsistently even when the speed setting is correct. Apple’s cleaning and response guidance is available in How to keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly.

Clean the underside gently, then test pointer movement again on the same surface. Cleaning addresses an erratic optical signal; it does not change the selected Tracking speed, Scroll speed, or gesture preferences.

Check for wireless interference

If cleaning does not resolve pauses or lag, check for Bluetooth interference. This is a connectivity problem rather than a preference problem, so changing Tracking speed or Scroll speed is unlikely to help. If the mouse remains slow to respond after checking the sensor, settings, and Bluetooth conditions, Apple says service may be needed.

Distinguish delayed response from a consistently low speed. Delayed response, pauses, and missed movements point toward the sensor or wireless connection. Smooth movement at an uncomfortable rate points toward a preference. This distinction helps avoid masking a connection problem by selecting an extreme slider position.

A practical adjustment sequence

When several behaviors feel wrong at once, change one category at a time so you know which adjustment helped.

  1. Classify the complaint as pointer movement, page movement, direction, gesture action, double-click timing, or erratic response.
  2. Change only the matching control described above.
  3. Test the mouse in the type of work that exposed the problem: a long document for scrolling, a large desktop for pointer travel, or a full-screen app for swipes.
  4. If movement is still erratic rather than merely too fast or slow, stop changing sliders and clean the sensor.
  5. Check Bluetooth interference if pauses continue, and seek service if the mouse remains unresponsive.

Keep the test conditions similar between adjustments. Use the same display, application, and type of movement, and note whether the problem is distance, direction, timing, or interruption. This makes it easier to return to the prior setting if an adjustment does not help.

Apple’s Multi-Touch gesture documentation and its Magic Mouse guide for iMac provide the gesture descriptions and model-specific behavior. The settings themselves are built into macOS, so changing them does not require purchasing software or an accessory.
