Use 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 to change key assignments, create macros, disable supported key functions, and apply firmware updates on the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. Connect the keyboard to the computer, select the keyboard in the software, change only the functions the Xbox Edition exposes, and save or apply the profile. For the specific Windows 11 lighting-control problem documented by 8BitDo, set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB. Use the Xbox Edition’s own manual for any button-by-button hardware shortcut; fast-mapping instructions for the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard are not confirmed for this model.

First, confirm which 8BitDo keyboard you have

These instructions concern the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, an 87-key mechanical keyboard designed for Xbox and listed by 8BitDo as compatible with Windows and Android. It has programmable buttons, an RGB backlight, function shortcut keys, an Fn lock, and three connection methods: Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4G wireless, and wired USB.

Do not silently substitute instructions for another 8BitDo keyboard or an Xbox controller. Product names and available controls differ between models. The Xbox Edition support page links its owner’s manual and software downloads; consult that page when a menu, button, or shortcut in your unit does not match the description below.

Which configuration method should you use?

Goal Best-supported path Important limitation
Change a key assignment Ultimate Software V2 Only functions exposed for the Xbox Edition can be assigned.
Create a macro Ultimate Software V2 The software supports macros in general; the exact Xbox Edition controls and limits must be confirmed in the current app.
Disable a key function Ultimate Software V2 8BitDo describes this capability, but the exact list for this keyboard is not established here.
Update firmware Ultimate Software V2 or the product-specific support page Use the Xbox Edition package, not firmware for another keyboard.
Change lighting Keyboard shortcuts or Ultimate Software V2, depending on the control Windows 11 lighting control has a specific “8BitDo RGB” setting requirement.
Assign buttons without software Hardware fast mapping, only if the Xbox Edition manual documents it Detailed fast-mapping directions found for the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard are not confirmed for the Xbox Edition.

For reliable profile editing, use a wired USB connection first. It avoids pairing problems and keeps the keyboard powered while firmware or configuration changes are being written. After saving a profile, you can test it over Bluetooth or 2.4G.

What you need before changing settings

  • The Xbox Edition keyboard and its USB cable. The box also includes two Dual Super Buttons, a 2.4G adapter, an instruction manual, and stickers.
  • A supported computer. 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2 download listing specifies Windows 10 or later and macOS 13.0 or later.
  • The current Ultimate Software V2 download selected from the Xbox Edition support page. The support page may list Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS options, but those listings do not prove that every configuration function works on every platform.
  • A stable connection. Do not unplug the keyboard, close the application, or switch connection modes during a firmware update.
  • The Xbox Edition owner’s manual for any physical shortcut that is not shown in the software.

Change key mapping in Ultimate Software V2

8BitDo describes Ultimate Software V2 as its configuration tool for key mapping, macros, disabling certain key functions, and firmware updates. The exact screen names can change between software releases, so treat the following as the safe workflow rather than a promise that every label appears exactly as written.

  1. Install the current application. Download Ultimate Software V2 from the Xbox Edition support page and install the version for your operating system. On macOS, the published requirement is macOS 13.0 or later; on Windows, the listing specifies Windows 10 or later.
  2. Connect the keyboard by USB. Plug the supplied cable directly into the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub while configuring or updating firmware. If the keyboard is already paired wirelessly, leave the wireless receiver or Bluetooth connection in place only after the wired device is detected.
  3. Open Ultimate Software V2 and select the keyboard. Choose the device entry that identifies the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. If another 8BitDo product is shown, do not edit it by mistake.
  4. Open the key-mapping or button-assignment page. Select the physical key or programmable button you want to change. The app should present the assignments and functions supported by the connected device.
  5. Choose the replacement action. Select the keyboard action, supported system function, or other option offered for that control. Do not assume that an option visible for another 8BitDo device is valid for this keyboard.
  6. Configure each additional control. Repeat the selection for every key you need to change. Keep a written list of the original assignments so you can restore them if a game or application behaves unexpectedly.
  7. Apply or save the profile. Use the app’s save, apply, or sync command. Wait for the operation to finish before disconnecting the cable.
  8. Test outside the editor. Open a text field and verify ordinary keys. Then test the changed control in the application where you intend to use it. A mapping that works in a text editor may still conflict with a game’s own bindings or with an operating-system shortcut.

If the application does not show a keyboard profile, close it, reconnect the cable, and reopen the software. Confirm that you installed Ultimate Software V2 rather than an older utility or a package for a different 8BitDo keyboard.

Configure macros and disable supported functions

Macros

8BitDo lists macros as a feature of Ultimate Software V2. A macro can combine a sequence of inputs behind one programmable control, but the Xbox Edition’s exact macro editor, timing options, storage limits, and permitted keys are not established by the product information available here. In the app, use only the macro controls presented for the connected Xbox Edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build and test a macro in a harmless text field before using it in a game or productivity application. Check whether the target software permits macros, because a program can ignore, block, or interpret automated input differently from ordinary keystrokes. If a macro repeats unexpectedly, remove the assignment in Ultimate Software V2 and restore the original key.

Disabling a key function

Ultimate Software V2 is described as supporting the disabling of certain key functions. This does not mean every key can be disabled or that the same choices are available on every platform. Select the key in the Xbox Edition profile and use the disable option only if the current software explicitly offers it. Save the profile and test the key in a text editor; if the key still produces an action, the operating system or application may be handling that input independently.

Fix the documented Windows 11 lighting-control problem

8BitDo’s Windows 11 troubleshooting FAQ asks why keyboard lighting control does not work and why the software may appear unresponsive. Its stated remedy is narrow and specific: in Ultimate Software V2, make sure the lighting control mode is set to “8BitDo RGB”.

  1. Connect the keyboard and open Ultimate Software V2.
  2. Open the lighting or lighting-control section for the Xbox Edition.
  3. Set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB.
  4. Apply the setting, then test brightness, effect, or color controls.

This setting is the manufacturer’s answer to that reported Windows 11 lighting issue. It is not established as a universal fix for every case in which Ultimate Software V2 is unresponsive. If the software remains frozen, reconnect the keyboard by USB, restart the application, and verify that the Xbox Edition is selected before trying another change.

Firmware updates and what the version notes mean

Ultimate Software V2 is also used for firmware updates. Select the firmware entry for the Xbox Edition from its support page or from the device screen in the software. Keep the keyboard connected by USB, maintain power, and follow the on-screen completion message. A failed update can leave the device unusable until the manufacturer’s recovery instructions are followed, so do not begin one on a low-power or intermittently connected setup.

8BitDo’s support listing records these Xbox Edition firmware notes:

Version note Change described by 8BitDo Qualification
v1.07 Optimized abnormal volume-knob performance and input accuracy. A historical support-listing note, not proof that v1.07 is the newest release on the day you read this.
v1.06 Optimized key-input latency. A historical support-listing note.
v1.05 Added Windows Dynamic Lighting Effects support for wired connections. Configuration requires the latest Ultimate Software V2; the support note specifically describes wired use.

Check the support page for the current package and release status before updating. Do not infer that a version number listed in the history is necessarily the latest available firmware.

Windows Dynamic Lighting: wired-only qualification

The v1.05 note refers to Windows Dynamic Lighting Effects support when the keyboard is connected by wire. If you are trying to use Windows 11’s lighting controls, connect the keyboard over USB, install the current Ultimate Software V2, and configure the feature there as directed. The firmware note does not establish equivalent Dynamic Lighting support over Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless, so do not troubleshoot a wireless setup as if it had the same capability.

Hardware fast mapping: what is known and what is not

The standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard manual describes a fast-mapping mode in which you enter the mode, hold one or more keys to assign, and press the programmable key to finish. That manual says up to six keys can be assigned to one programmable key, the mode exits after eight seconds without activity, and holding the fast-mapping button for five seconds clears fast mappings.

  • 87-key layout. Kailh Box Switch V2 White. Dye-sub PBT keycaps.
  • Top mount style. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
  • Dual Super Buttons - offer large, programmable keys. Map anything to the Super Buttons instantly without using software.
  • Classic power status LED, with independent control panel.

Those directions are not confirmed as Xbox Edition instructions. The Xbox Edition support page links a separate owner’s manual, and the exact button-by-button sequence for this model has not been established here. Use the hardware procedure only after the Xbox Edition manual explicitly shows the same controls and timing. Until then, Ultimate Software V2 is the dependable documented route for changing assignments.

The same caution applies to the Dual Super Buttons. 8BitDo describes them as programmable and says users can assign macros or other functions without software, but the exact fast-mapping sequence and supported functions should be verified in the Xbox Edition manual before you rely on them.

Connection modes and compatibility

Connection or platform What 8BitDo lists Practical use for configuration
Wired USB Listed connection; required by the v1.05 Dynamic Lighting note. Preferred for Ultimate Software V2 detection, profile writing, and firmware updates.
2.4G wireless Listed connection using the included adapter. Useful for normal operation after configuration; not established as equivalent to wired Dynamic Lighting.
Bluetooth 5.0 Listed connection. Useful for supported devices after setup; reconnect by USB if the software cannot detect the keyboard.
Windows Keyboard compatibility is listed as Windows 10 (1903) and later. Ultimate Software V2 lists Windows 10 and later. Use the Xbox Edition support download and the current software build.
Android Keyboard compatibility is listed as Android 9.0 and later. The support page lists mobile software options, but not every configuration function is confirmed for Android.
macOS Ultimate Software V2 download listing specifies macOS 13.0 and later. Confirm that the Xbox Edition appears in the current macOS app before attempting profile changes.
iOS The support page lists an iOS software option. The listing alone does not prove that every Xbox Edition setting is available on iOS.

Compatibility of the physical keyboard and availability of the configuration application are separate questions. A keyboard can connect to a platform while a particular mapping, macro, firmware, or lighting function remains available only on another platform or in wired mode.

Troubleshooting checklist

The keyboard is not detected

  • Connect the supplied USB cable directly to the computer and reopen Ultimate Software V2.
  • Confirm that the selected device is the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition.
  • Try another USB port and remove an unpowered hub from the connection.
  • Install the current Xbox Edition software package rather than a utility intended for another model.
  • If the keyboard works wirelessly but not in the software, leave wireless disconnected while establishing the wired connection.

A mapping appears not to work

  • Verify that the profile was applied or saved after editing.
  • Test the key in a plain text field, then in the target application.
  • Check for a conflicting binding in the game or operating system.
  • Restore the original assignment if a macro or system function is intercepting the input.

Lighting controls do nothing on Windows 11

  • Set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB in Ultimate Software V2, as specified by 8BitDo’s FAQ.
  • Use a wired connection when testing Windows Dynamic Lighting Effects, because the v1.05 support note describes that feature for wired operation.
  • Restart the application after applying the mode, then test again.

The software becomes unresponsive during an update

  • Do not unplug the keyboard while an update is still in progress.
  • Wait for the application to report completion before restarting it.
  • If the device is no longer detected, use the Xbox Edition support page’s recovery or update instructions rather than applying firmware for a different keyboard.

Other hardware settings and replacement considerations

The Xbox Edition has an 87-key layout, an RGB backlight, function shortcut keys, and an Fn lock. The product page lists a 4000mAh battery and describes the PCB as hot-swappable. Hot-swappable describes how switches are mounted; it does not identify which replacement switch models fit. Verify physical and electrical compatibility with 8BitDo’s current documentation before buying or installing replacements.

  • Kailh Glaze Jellyfish Pro linear switches. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
  • Double-layered ABS keycaps with matte UV coating. MDA-like height. Top mount style.
  • Fast-mapping on Super Buttons (no software needed)

Changing switches will not change key mappings stored in Ultimate Software V2. Treat mechanical modifications and software profiles as separate tasks: save or document your profile first, power the keyboard down before opening it, and test every replaced key after reassembly.

A safe profile workflow

  1. Record the factory or current assignments.
  2. Connect by USB and open the Xbox Edition profile in Ultimate Software V2.
  3. Change one key or one macro at a time.
  4. Apply the profile and test in a plain text field.
  5. Test the intended game or application, including modifier keys and shortcuts.
  6. Keep a second profile or written record of known-good settings before making another group of changes.
  7. Use the Xbox Edition manual for any hardware-only mapping and do not import assumptions from the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard manual.

This approach makes it clear whether a problem comes from the profile, the application’s own bindings, the connection mode, or the keyboard firmware.

What the official information does not establish

The available product and support descriptions confirm the software route and broad capabilities, but they do not provide a complete button-by-button list of every Xbox Edition setting. They also do not establish that every Ultimate Software V2 function is exposed on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS alike. When a control is missing, follow the current Xbox Edition manual and the device-specific software screen instead of assuming that a feature documented for another 8BitDo product is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, use Ultimate Software V2 for documented profile work, use USB for the most reliable setup and for the wired Dynamic Lighting path, set Windows 11 lighting mode to 8BitDo RGB when that specific issue occurs, and verify all physical shortcuts against the Xbox Edition manual.
