To make Google Maps find restaurants in the right area, either let Maps use your phone’s location or name the area in the search itself, such as restaurants in Chelsea. Notifications are controlled separately: your phone’s operating-system permission determines whether Maps can alert you at all, while Maps’ own notification categories determine which alerts it may send. Personalized place recommendations are a third, account-level setting.
What you are changing—and what you are not
Restaurant searches involve three different controls that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Search location: determines the area Maps uses for nearby results. It can come from device location, a browser location permission, or an area you type into the query.
- Notification access: determines whether Google Maps may display alerts. The operating system can block every Maps alert, even when individual categories are enabled inside the app.
- Personalized recommendations: controls suggestions about places you might like. These depend on account and Search services settings rather than one restaurant-search notification switch.
Changing one does not automatically change the others. For example, turning off notifications does not stop Maps from using location for a search, and allowing location does not turn on review or photo prompts.

A restaurant search is an on-demand request: you open Maps and ask for places in a particular area. A notification is a message Maps chooses to send later, often about contributions or reviews. A recommendation is a personalized result based on account signals. If you are trying to stop a prompt about a restaurant you visited, changing the search area will not help; you need the relevant notification or personalization setting.

Choose how Maps should set the restaurant-search area
Use your current device location
Location-based search is convenient when you want restaurants near where you are now. It requires location to be available to both the operating system and Google Maps (or the browser if you use Maps on the web). On a phone, check the device setting first, then the app permission. If either level blocks access, Maps cannot use the phone’s current position.
Specify an area in the query
When Maps is centered on the wrong place, location permission is unavailable, or you simply want to plan ahead, put the area in the search. Try restaurants in Chelsea, Italian restaurants near Union Square, or a complete city and neighborhood name. Google’s search guidance recommends adding a location when nearby results are not appearing. This method lets you choose the area without granting Maps device-location access.
Use a recognizable neighborhood, landmark, city, or street. A more specific phrase generally gives you a more useful starting area than a broad country or region. You can add the type of food, price preference, or other term after naming the location, such as vegan restaurants in Austin. If you are planning a trip, this manual method avoids having results switch back to your present location.

|---|---|---|---|
| Current device location | Phone’s location services plus Maps permission | Finding places near you right now | Convenient and usually precise; requires location access |
| Location in the query | The neighborhood, landmark, city, or address you type | Planning in another area or avoiding device-location access | You choose the area explicitly; results may cover a wider area around that term |
| Browser location | Operating-system permission for the browser plus the Google site’s permission | Searching from a computer or mobile browser | Requires two permission layers; a typed area is the fallback |
Convenience versus privacy
Allowing location while Maps is in use is the practical choice for current-nearby searches. Typing the area is more deliberate and avoids sharing a device position with Maps, but you must repeat the location when you search a different place. Broader, background access is not needed for ordinary restaurant searching; consider it only for a feature that specifically requires access when Maps is not open.
Set restaurant-search location on Android
Turn on the phone’s location service
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Location.
- Turn on Use location.
Manufacturers can rename or rearrange these controls, so a device running a different Android release may show slightly different labels. If a work profile or device administrator controls location, that policy can also affect what you can change.
Give Google Maps the appropriate permission
- Press and hold the Google Maps icon.
- Tap App info.
- Open Permissions > Location.
- Select an access level that fits your use, such as Allow only while using the app. Some phones also offer Allow all the time.
- If the permission page includes a Use precise location switch, turn it on when you need the closest possible nearby results.
Restaurant searching itself normally needs access while Maps is open, not unrestricted background access. Choose broader access only when you understand why another Maps feature requires it. If you grant only approximate location, Maps can still show local restaurants, but the search center and distance ordering may be less exact.
Check the result
Open Maps, tap the location control, and search for a generic category such as restaurants. If Maps still shows the old area, close and reopen the app, verify that the blue location marker is near you, and search again. If precise location is disabled, local results can still appear but may be farther away.

Set restaurant-search location on iPhone or iPad
Allow Location Services for Maps
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security > Location Services (older iOS versions may label this Privacy > Location Services).
- Make sure Location Services is on.
- Choose Google Maps in the app list.
- Select the access option that suits you, such as While Using the App. Enable Precise Location if you want the tightest nearby radius.
With precise location off, Maps may still return local restaurants, but the center can be less accurate and places may be farther from you. If you do not want to grant location access, type the neighborhood or city into the search instead.
What to check if Maps asks repeatedly
Confirm that Location Services is enabled globally and that Google Maps has an allowed option in the app list. An app-level denial overrides the global setting for Maps. If you have chosen not to provide precise location, do not expect the same tight radius as a precise-location search; use a typed neighborhood when exact control matters.
Use Google Maps in a browser
A browser has two separate permission layers: the operating system must let the browser obtain location, and the Google Maps website must be allowed to request it.
Android browser
- Open Settings > Location > App permission and select your browser.
- Give the browser the desired location access.
- In the browser, open Google Maps and use the site-information or lock icon next to the address bar.
- Open the site’s permissions, set Location to Allow, then reload the page.
iPhone or iPad browser
- In iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, enable location for the browser.
- Open the Google Maps site in that browser.
- Use the browser’s website settings to allow location for Google’s site, then reload.
If you cannot find both permission controls, enter the area directly in the query, for example vegan restaurants in Austin. A typed location works without browser geolocation. This is also the simplest option on a desktop computer where you do not want to grant the browser location access.

What happens when device location is off
Disabling device location prevents apps from receiving the phone’s location through the location service, but it does not guarantee that every local result disappears. Google says Android searches can still use information such as an IP address. That means Maps or Google Search may continue to show broadly local restaurants or ads even when the location switch is off. Treat location permission as control over precise device-based positioning, not a promise that all location inference stops.
If you need a predictable area while location is disabled, include the area in every search. A manually entered neighborhood gives Maps an explicit target, while IP-based results may identify only a broad city or region.
Turn Google Maps notifications on or off on Android
Change individual Maps categories
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings > Notifications.
- Choose a notification category.
- Use its switch to enable or disable that category.
Category names and availability can differ by Android version, account, and Maps release. If a category is absent, Maps is not offering that control on the current account or device.

Check Android’s system-level permission
If no Maps alerts appear despite enabled categories, open Android Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Maps (the exact path varies by manufacturer) and allow notifications. Also check that a system-wide mode such as Do Not Disturb, battery restrictions, or a work-profile policy is not suppressing alerts. The in-app switch cannot override an operating-system block.
Think of the two levels as a gate and a filter. The Android permission is the gate for all alerts; the Maps category switches filter the types that may pass through. Turning off one category does not disable location or other categories.
Turn Google Maps notifications on or off on iPhone and iPad
Allow notifications in iOS
- Open Settings > Notifications > Google Maps.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where alerts may appear—Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners—and whether sounds and badges are permitted.
Choose Maps categories
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings > Notifications.
- Open a category and adjust its switch.
Both levels matter on iOS. If Allow Notifications is off, enabling a category inside Maps will not produce an alert. Conversely, allowing Maps at the system level does not force every category on. iOS can also limit presentation to a banner, the Notification Center, or the Lock Screen without changing which Maps categories are enabled.
Which restaurant-related alerts can Maps send?
Maps does not have one universal “restaurant searches” alert. Restaurant-related prompts generally fall into contribution and review categories:
- Photo prompts: Maps may ask you to add photos of restaurants or bars. On iPhone and iPad, the photo-prompt feature requires permission for Google to check for photos; Google says it obtains location data from the photo metadata for this purpose.
- Questions about visited places: Maps may ask you to answer questions about places you visited. On Android, Google’s help information says Timeline is needed for these prompts.
- Replies to reviews: You may receive an alert when someone replies to one of your reviews.
These alerts concern contributions or review activity, not a guarantee that Maps will notify you whenever a new restaurant search result appears. Disable the relevant category if you do not want that type of prompt. If you want review replies but not photo requests, leave the review category enabled and switch off the photo category rather than blocking Maps entirely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControl suggested places and personalized recommendations
If your concern is the restaurants Maps recommends—not a push alert—use the account-level personalization controls. Google’s Maps guidance says recommendations can depend on Search services Personalised Recommendations and related account settings such as Search services history, Timeline, and device information.
Google is rolling out an update to Search services settings gradually, so the exact menu and wording may not match every account. Open the Google Account or Maps settings pages and look for those labels rather than following a single promised path. Review which activity and device signals are enabled, then change only the settings that fit your privacy and personalization needs. This affects suggested places and search personalization; it is separate from the notification category switches described above.
Changing these account controls may alter the relevance of recommendations, but it is not a substitute for entering a location in a query. If you need restaurants in a particular neighborhood immediately, name that neighborhood even if personalized recommendations are enabled.

Fix restaurant results that show the wrong area
Maps is centered on a previous city
- Search with an explicit area, such as
restaurants in Chelsea, to override the intended search area. - On a phone, confirm the device location switch and Maps permission are both enabled.
- Reopen Maps and check whether the blue location marker is in the expected place.
Results are nearby but too far away
- Enable precise location in the Maps permission settings.
- Move outdoors or near a window briefly if the phone is struggling to obtain a location fix.
- Use a neighborhood, landmark, or street in the query to narrow the search manually.
Maps shows local results even though location is disabled
This can be normal because IP-address information may still produce broadly local results. Use an explicit query when you want to control the area, and remember that disabling device location does not remove every form of location inference.
Recommended Free Tools
The browser cannot find your location
- Verify the browser has operating-system location permission.
- Verify Google Maps has location permission inside the browser’s site controls.
- Reload the page after changing either permission.
- If permission prompts are blocked or unavailable, type the desired area into the search.
Fix missing or excessive Maps notifications
No notifications arrive
- Check the phone’s app-notification permission for Google Maps.
- In Maps, open Profile picture or initial > Settings > Notifications and enable the needed category.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb or notification-summary features that could delay delivery.
- Check battery-saver or background restrictions if alerts stop when Maps is not open.
Too many restaurant-related prompts arrive
Open the in-app notification list and disable only photo, visited-place question, or review-reply categories you do not want. Leaving other categories enabled preserves unrelated Maps alerts. On iOS, you can additionally restrict how permitted alerts appear without disabling Maps completely.
A category is missing
Google can vary categories by platform, account, language, and app version. Update Maps and the operating system if updates are available, then check the notification page again. Do not assume a missing category can be recreated through a hidden universal switch.
You changed a setting but the behavior did not change
Recheck which layer you changed. A Maps category cannot override a blocked OS permission, and a notification setting cannot change the location used for a search. For recommendations, check the account-level Search services labels instead of the in-app notification page.
Privacy choices at a glance
| Choice | What you gain | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Allow location only while using Maps | Current-area searches when the app is open | Maps cannot use the phone’s location for features that need background access |
| Allow broader or all-the-time location access | Background features that specifically require it | More continuous location access; unnecessary for ordinary restaurant searches |
| Keep precise location on | More accurate nearby results | Shares a more exact position with the permitted app |
| Type the area in every query | Control over the search area without device-location permission | Requires an extra phrase and may need repeating when you move |
| Allow Maps notifications, then choose categories | Useful review or contribution alerts without enabling everything | Requires managing both system and in-app settings |
A practical setup for restaurant searches
- Decide whether you want current-nearby results or a manually chosen area.
- For current-nearby results, enable the phone’s location service and grant Maps while-you-use access; enable precise location if distance matters.
- For a planned trip or a privacy-first search, include the neighborhood or city in the query instead of granting location access.
- Check the operating system’s Maps notification permission.
- Inside Maps, enable only the notification categories you actually need, such as replies to your reviews.
- If recommendations feel unrelated, review Search services Personalised Recommendations, Search services history, Timeline, and device-information controls in the account settings visible to you.
This arrangement keeps search-area control, alert delivery, and personalization as separate decisions. You can change one without unintentionally changing the other two.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make Google Maps search restaurants in another city?
Add the city or neighborhood to the search, such as restaurants in Chelsea or Italian restaurants near Union Square. This explicitly chooses the search area and does not require device-location permission.
Why are Google Maps restaurant results still local when my phone location is off?
Google says Android results may still use information such as your IP address. Turning off device location blocks precise device-based positioning, but it does not remove every form of location inference.
Best Value
Do I need Allow all the time for restaurant searches?
Usually not. Restaurant searches made while Maps is open generally need location access while using the app. Broader access is intended for features that specifically need background location.
Why are restaurants shown farther away than I am?
Check whether precise location is enabled for Google Maps. With approximate or imprecise location, local results can still appear but may be centered farther from your actual position. You can also enter a neighborhood or landmark manually.
Why do I receive questions about restaurants I visited?
These are contribution prompts, not alerts for every restaurant search. On Android, Google says Timeline is needed for questions about visited places. Disable that notification category in Maps if you do not want the prompts.
How do I stop Google Maps from asking for restaurant photos?
Open your profile picture or initial in Maps, choose Settings > Notifications, and turn off the photo-related category if it is available. On iPhone or iPad, photo prompts also involve permission for Google to check photos.
Why are Maps notification categories enabled but no alerts appear?
Check the operating system’s app-notification permission first. Android and iOS can block all Maps notifications even when an individual category is enabled inside Maps. Also check Do Not Disturb, notification-summary settings, and battery or background restrictions.
Are recommended restaurants controlled by notification settings?
No. Suggested places are a separate personalization feature. Google identifies controls such as Search services Personalised Recommendations, Search services history, Timeline, and device information; the exact interface is being updated gradually.

The operating system must allow location for the browser, and the Google Maps website must also have site-level location permission. If either layer is blocked, type the desired area directly into the search.
The Bottom Line
For nearby restaurants, enable location for your phone and Google Maps, preferably with while-you-use and precise access. For another area or a privacy-first search, name the neighborhood or city in the query. Manage alerts twice—once in the operating system and again under Maps’ notification categories—and treat personalized recommendations as a separate account setting.
