How to Change Gesture Typing Settings on Gboard (Glide Typing Guide)

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

On Gboard, gesture typing is called Glide typing. On an Android phone, open Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing, then change the controls shown there. If you are already typing, open Gboard’s menu and go to More > Settings > Glide typing instead.

The exact menu names can differ on Android versions and manufacturer-customized phones. Google also notes that Glide typing does not work in every language, so checking the active language is an important part of setup and troubleshooting.

What gesture typing means on Gboard

Gboard’s swipe-to-type feature is named Glide typing. Instead of tapping each key separately, place one finger on the first letter of a word and slide across the remaining letters without lifting your finger. Lift your finger after the final letter, and Gboard interprets the path and inserts its best match. Google describes the basic action as sliding “from letter to letter to spell out words” (Google Gboard Help).

Gesture typing is a keyboard feature, not a setting belonging to an individual messaging, email, or notes app. You change it in Gboard’s settings, and the change applies wherever Gboard is used. There are two practical ways to reach the same area:

Android Settings Gboard is not currently open, or you want to configure the keyboard from the system menu Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing
Gboard’s keyboard menu You already have a text field open and want to remain in the app while changing a setting Open features menu > More > Settings > Glide typing

Some phones use a different system path. Google’s general instructions also show System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard, so a missing label does not automatically mean the feature is unavailable. The important destinations are Gboard and then Glide typing; the wording around them can vary.

Before you change anything

Make sure Gboard is installed and is the keyboard that appears when you tap a text field. The Gboard-specific menu will not be available if the device is using a different on-screen keyboard. If another keyboard opens, first use the phone’s keyboard settings to select Gboard. The selector’s name and location depend on the phone maker and Android version.

It also helps to identify the language and layout currently selected in Gboard. Google says Glide typing is not available in every language, so a gesture that works in one layout may be unavailable in another. You do not need to change language merely to open the settings, but the active language matters when you test the feature.

Change Glide typing from Android Settings

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap System, then Languages & input.
  3. Tap Virtual keyboard, then select Gboard.
  4. Tap Glide typing.
  5. Adjust the options that your version of Gboard displays on that page.

This route is useful when no text field is open, when you are setting up a phone for the first time, or when you want to inspect the keyboard configuration before writing. The final page is the authoritative list of controls for that particular Gboard installation. Do not assume that an option shown in an older tutorial must appear on your device.

Google’s Glide typing instructions apply to Android 8.0 and later, but manufacturers can rename or reorganize the menus. On a customized Android interface, look for entries containing Keyboard, On-screen keyboard, or Virtual keyboard if Languages & input is not shown exactly as written.

For Google’s current setup guidance, see Set up Gboard on Android.

Change the setting while Gboard is open

  1. Open an app with a text field, such as a message or note, and tap the field so Gboard appears.
  2. Tap Gboard’s Open features menu button. Depending on the keyboard layout, this may be the menu button that reveals additional tools.
  3. Tap More, then Settings.
  4. Choose Glide typing.
  5. Change the controls available on that screen.

This is usually the quickest route while composing a message because it does not require leaving the app to search through Android Settings. Google also documents opening Gboard settings by tapping the keyboard’s Settings icon. If you see a gear icon instead of the features-menu route, tapping it leads to the same Gboard settings area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the toolbar is showing only a few icons, tap the features-menu button first. Additional tools can be collapsed behind it, so looking for More before opening the menu may make the option appear to be missing.

Turn gesture typing on and test it

After opening Glide typing, use the switch or controls shown by your Gboard version. Google’s help does not guarantee that every release presents identical option names, so follow the labels visible on your device instead of searching for a control that may have been moved or renamed.

Test the setting in a simple text field, such as a note or message draft:

  1. Tap the field to display Gboard.
  2. Place your finger on the first letter of a short word.
  3. Without lifting your finger, slide across each following letter in order.
  4. Lift your finger after the final letter.
  5. Check the inserted word before continuing to type.

The gesture should be one continuous movement. Lifting your finger in the middle ends the current glide, while starting on the wrong key can produce a different suggestion. For a first test, use a short, clearly spelled word and keep the path over the intended letters. Once that works, try the words you normally type.

Glide typing and ordinary tapping can be mixed. You can glide one word, tap the next, and then glide another. If a gesture produces an unexpected word, correct it in the text field and continue; the test is intended to confirm that Gboard recognizes the motion, not to guarantee a particular prediction for every path.

Check the language before troubleshooting the gesture

Glide typing is not supported in every Gboard language. Google explicitly warns that “Not all languages work with this feature” on its Slide your finger to type – Android page.

If Glide typing is unavailable or produces no result:

  • Open Gboard’s language settings and identify the active language and layout.
  • Confirm that you are testing the layout you intended to use, rather than another enabled language.
  • Switch to a language that supports Glide typing, if one is available for your use.
  • Return to a simple text field and test a short word again.

The cited Google help page does not provide a complete, permanent list of supported languages. Availability can therefore depend on the language selected on your phone and the Gboard version installed. If you regularly switch between languages, repeat the test after selecting each one instead of assuming that one language’s behavior applies to all of them.

Move the cursor with the space bar

Cursor movement is a separate Gboard gesture from Glide typing. Google’s general keyboard guide says to swipe left or right across the space bar to move the text cursor. This can be useful when correcting a word without trying to tap precisely between letters. The gesture is described in Use your keyboard on Android.

Do not confuse the two gestures. Sliding across letters enters a new word; swiping across the space bar moves the cursor through text that already exists. To correct a glided word, use the space-bar gesture to position the cursor, then tap or glide the replacement text as appropriate.

Why your menu may look different

Android version and manufacturer changes

Android manufacturers can customize Settings, and Google’s own documentation shows more than one system path. One phone may place Gboard under Languages & input; another may use System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard. Search the Settings app for Gboard, Keyboard, or On-screen keyboard if the documented path is not visible.

Do not treat a different label as proof that Gboard lacks Glide typing. Follow the path until you find the installed keyboard, open its settings, and look for the Glide typing entry. If the phone’s Settings search returns several keyboard results, choose the result that leads to the on-screen or virtual keyboard rather than a physical-keyboard setting.

Gboard is not the keyboard shown

The Gboard route only appears when Gboard is installed and selected as the on-screen keyboard. If another keyboard opens when you tap a text field, use the device’s keyboard settings to select Gboard, then repeat the steps above. The names and location of that selector vary by manufacturer.

If Gboard is installed but does not appear as an available keyboard, the phone’s software may be organizing enabled keyboards under a separate on-screen-keyboard page. Search Settings for Gboard or on-screen keyboard and follow the manufacturer’s route.

The features menu is collapsed

When Gboard is open, its extra tools may be behind the Open features menu button. Tap that button before looking for More or Settings. If a dedicated gear icon is visible, tapping it is Google’s alternative shortcut into settings.

The Glide typing page has fewer controls

Gboard versions do not necessarily expose identical switches. Change only the controls actually displayed on your device; the absence of a historical option does not by itself indicate a malfunction. The current page for your installed version is more relevant than a screenshot from a different phone or an older help discussion.

About “Enable gesture cursor control”

A Google Pixel Community answer posted on October 20, 2020 directed users to Gboard settings > Glide typing > Enable gesture cursor control. That answer is dated community guidance, not a current specification for every Gboard release or Android device.

If you see an Enable gesture cursor control option under Glide typing, you can evaluate it there. If you do not see it, use the current space-bar gesture for cursor movement and do not assume the control must be present. Google’s general keyboard help documents the space-bar gesture independently of that older community instruction.

The historical community answer is available at Google Pixel Community. Because it was written for a particular question and date, it should not override the controls or instructions displayed by your current Gboard installation.

A quick diagnostic sequence

  1. Confirm that the keyboard on screen is Gboard.
  2. Open Glide typing through Android Settings or Gboard’s own settings.
  3. Check the active language and layout because support is language-dependent.
  4. Test by sliding across the letters of a short word and lifting your finger at the end.
  5. If the word is wrong, repeat with a slower, clearly traced path and verify that you began on the first letter.
  6. If the setting path itself is missing, use Settings search for Gboard, Keyboard, or On-screen keyboard.
  7. If the keyboard toolbar is visible but no settings icon appears, open the features menu and then choose More > Settings.
  8. If your device uses a heavily customized Android interface and the controls still cannot be found, consult the device manufacturer. Google specifically recommends contacting the manufacturer when customized Android steps do not match its instructions.

Change one thing at a time while diagnosing. First establish that Gboard is active, then check language support, then test the gesture. This order separates a navigation problem from a language limitation or a gesture-recognition problem.

Which route should you use?

Use the Android Settings route when you are configuring Gboard before typing, when the keyboard is not currently open, or when you want to search for the keyboard at the system level. Use the Gboard menu route when you are already writing and want to change a setting without leaving the text field.

Neither route is a separate version of Glide typing. Both lead to the same Gboard controls. The visible labels depend on the Android version, device manufacturer, Gboard version, and selected language. If one route is difficult to locate, try the other rather than assuming the setting has been removed.

Common questions

Is gesture typing the same as Glide typing?
Yes. Gboard’s name for sliding across letters to enter a word is Glide typing.

Where is the setting on Android?
Start with Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing. Some phones instead use a route such as System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I open the setting without leaving the app I am typing in?
Yes. With Gboard visible, open the features menu, tap More > Settings, and choose Glide typing. A visible gear icon is another shortcut.

Why does swiping do nothing?
First check the active Gboard language and layout. Google says Glide typing does not work in every language. Then verify that Gboard is the active keyboard and test a short word with one continuous motion.

Can I move the cursor by swiping on letters?
No. For cursor movement, Google documents swiping left or right on the space bar. Sliding over letters is the word-entry gesture.

Why can’t I find “Enable gesture cursor control”?
That wording comes from a Pixel Community answer dated October 20, 2020. It may not appear in current Gboard versions. Use the space-bar cursor gesture documented in Google’s general keyboard help instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all Android phones use the same menu names?
No. Manufacturers customize Android Settings, and Google documents more than one path. Search Settings for Gboard, Keyboard, or On-screen keyboard when the labels differ.

Do I need a separate accessory or paid app?
No. The documented feature is part of Gboard’s on-screen keyboard settings. No separate physical product is required to change it.

Bottom line

Gboard calls swipe-to-type Glide typing. Open it through Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing, or, while typing, use Open features menu > More > Settings > Glide typing. Then test by sliding from letter to letter and lifting your finger at the end of the word.

If the option is missing or the gesture fails, confirm that Gboard is active, check the selected language, and account for manufacturer-specific menu names. For cursor movement, swipe left or right on the space bar. If your customized Android interface still does not match these routes, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer.
