To switch off 5G, choose LTE in your phone’s cellular network settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options) > Voice & Data > LTE. Some Samsung Galaxy phones offer a similar choice under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Android menus and available options vary by model, carrier and region.
Change an iPhone from 5G to LTE
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular or Mobile Data, depending on your region.
- Tap Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options, then Voice & Data.
- Select LTE.
If you use Dual SIM, first select the line used for cellular data, then change its Voice & Data setting. Apple says the exact options depend on your iPhone model, carrier and region. See Apple’s guide to changing cellular data settings.

What the iPhone network options mean
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| 5G Auto | Switches to LTE when 5G speeds do not provide a noticeably better experience. |
| 5G On | Uses 5G when available; Apple notes that it may reduce battery life. |
| LTE | Uses LTE even when 5G is available. |
If you want to stop the iPhone from using 5G, choose LTE. If your goal is simply to let the phone avoid 5G when it offers no noticeable benefit, 5G Auto already does that. These descriptions are for iPhone settings; they should not be assumed to describe every Android phone. Apple’s details are in Use 5G with your iPhone.
Change a Samsung Galaxy phone to 4G
On some Galaxy models, open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode, then choose an option such as 4G/3G/2G (auto connect). This path and label are not available on every Galaxy: carrier versions can omit or change the network-mode control. The route is described in a Samsung Community discussion, rather than a universal official Samsung guide.

Other Android phones: find the network-mode setting
Android does not have one guaranteed menu path for every manufacturer, software version, carrier and country. Open Settings and search for 5G, Network mode or Preferred network type. If a network-mode menu appears, look for an LTE or 4G option. The wording and available choices depend on the device and carrier.

- Check the phone maker’s support instructions for your exact model and software version.
- Ask your carrier whether its device configuration or network service affects which modes appear.
- If cellular service behaves unexpectedly after changing the setting, contact your provider for device-specific help.
Do not assume a particular network mode from the status-bar icon alone: Apple notes that the 5G icon can depend on carrier network configuration. Changing the documented setting requires no accessory or purchase.
