Use an app’s dietary filter to narrow restaurant choices, then set allergy requests or item instructions on the specific order. For groceries, choose a replacement or refund preference for each item. These controls communicate preferences; they do not guarantee a restaurant will accommodate a request or that a substitute is safe for an allergy.
Choose the right control for the order
“AI” discovery or recommendation features may help surface options, but the verified settings below are app filters and order controls—not proof that an automated system will enforce a dietary need. A restaurant filter can narrow results without establishing that every dish from a restaurant meets your requirements. Restaurant modifications and grocery replacements are also separate workflows.

- Restaurant meal: Look for a dedicated allergy request, selectable menu modifiers, or an item-level note. Use the most specific control available for that dish.
- Grocery order: Choose whether each item can be replaced, requires your approval, has a preferred substitute, or should be refunded if unavailable.
Uber Eats: filter restaurant results and add allergy requests
Filter for dietary options
- Open Uber Eats and tap the filter icon below your delivery address.
- Under Dietary Type, select an available option, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly.
- Apply the filter to see merchants with matching options. To remove the filter later, open the filter bar and tap Clear All.
The filter helps narrow discovery; it does not confirm that every menu item or preparation method at a listed restaurant is suitable. Uber Eats describes these dietary filters in its allergy-instructions help page.
Add or remove an allergy request on a menu item
- Open the menu item and look for Allergy Requests.
- Select the applicable allergens, add a note if needed, and apply the request to that item.
- Review the item and its request again in your cart before checkout.
- To remove a preset request, reopen that item’s Allergy Requests control, clear the selection, and confirm.
Do not rely on the general Special Instructions field as the only place to report an allergy. Uber says the field may be followed, but Uber and the merchant are not responsible for carrying out allergy instructions entered there. Use the dedicated allergy control when available.

DoorDash: add restaurant item instructions
- Select a menu item and open its Preferences area.
- Enter the request in Special Instructions—for example, sauce on the side or no tomatoes—or select an explicit modifier or allergy/intolerance option if the item offers one.
- Review your choices before adding the item to the order.
Instructions are requests, not guarantees. A restaurant may be unable to accommodate them, and changes such as adding ingredients can cost extra. Available options differ by restaurant. See DoorDash’s instructions for adding special requests and its overview of food allergies and intolerances.
Set grocery replacement preferences
Replacement controls apply to grocery items, not restaurant dish modifications. Set the preference before checkout and check that it is saved for each item.

Uber Eats grocery orders
Uber Eats lists four choices: replace with a similar item, require your approval, choose replacements yourself (up to five), or do not replace and refund the item. If you require approval, enable notifications and respond while the order is being shopped; if you do not respond, the item is refunded. A shopper or merchant may contact you during shopping. DoorDash grocery orders
For each item, DoorDash lets you choose a similar item, select a preferred substitute, request a refund, or ask the shopper to contact you. If you choose contact, respond while the order is being picked. If the shopper cannot reach you, they may choose a replacement or refund the item. DoorDash warns that a shopper cannot ensure a substitute meets dietary requirements, including allergies, and advises customers to read product labels. See DoorDash’s item replacement instructions.

What to do when an allergy is serious
App settings are communication and selection tools, not safety guarantees. Food preferences such as vegetarian choices are different from allergies that require careful handling. For a serious allergy, use the dedicated allergy control if the app provides one, inspect the order details, and contact the restaurant directly if you need clarification about ingredients or cross-contact. Do not assume that a filter, free-text note, or grocery substitute makes food safe; fulfillment and available controls depend on the merchant and order workflow.
