Android has no single documented setting for choosing any font color across every screen and app. You can adjust supported color palettes, turn on dark theme, change accessibility options, or choose text colors in Google Reading mode. The right option depends on where the text appears: on the home screen, inside an app, across the interface, or in a reading view.
First, identify which text you want to recolor
- Home-screen labels: Check your device’s wallpaper and home-screen personalization settings. On Pixel phones, some home-screen appearance options are under Wallpaper & style.
- Text inside one app: Check that app’s Theme or Display settings. Its options may be separate from Android’s, and not every app lets you choose text colors.
- Text across supported screens: Android’s palette, dark-theme, and accessibility settings can change selected aspects of the interface, but they do not provide one universal font-color picker.
- A clean view of an article: Google Reading mode offers color-theme choices for supported content without changing the original page.
Google Android Help describes color-scheme changes as applying to “some screens and apps,” not everything. Menu names and available controls vary by Android version and manufacturer; if a path below does not match your phone, search Settings for the bolded setting name.

Change the supported device color palette
- Open Settings > Wallpaper & style.
- Choose Wallpaper colors to use a palette based on your wallpaper, or Basic colors to select from the available basic palettes.
These controls change the supported color scheme. They are not a way to set any arbitrary text color on every app or screen. Google’s instructions include steps that apply only to Android 13 and later, so the available choices may differ on older versions or other manufacturers’ software. Use dark theme for a darker interface
- Open Settings > Display > Dark theme.
- Turn Dark theme on or off.
Dark theme changes the interface theme; it does not let you choose a font hue. Some apps do not support the device theme, and an app may use its own Theme or Display setting. If an app stays light, check its settings. On some phones, Battery Saver can turn dark theme on automatically. Google lists these qualifications in its dark theme and color-scheme help.

Make text easier to see with accessibility settings
These options address size, weight, visibility, or color perception rather than providing a general color picker. Availability can vary by Android version and device.
- Font size: Search Settings for Font size and adjust the slider. The change does not apply in some apps.
- Bold text: Turn this on if heavier lettering is easier to read.
- High-contrast text: Google recommends this option on Android 15 and earlier when text needs to stand out more.
- Outline text: Available on Android 16 and later, according to Google’s accessibility help.
- Color inversion: Inverts colors across the screen, including media. It is a broad visual change, not a targeted text-color setting.
- Color correction: Intended to compensate for color-vision differences and not supported on every device.
Search Settings for the option you need if the menu location differs. Google’s Android display and text settings describes availability and limitations.

Choose text colors in Google Reading mode
Reading mode is the closest Google-provided option for choosing text colors in a reading view. It works on Android 9 or later phones, but only with supported content. It does not support PDFs, emails, chat messages, or social feeds.

- Follow its setup instructions to enable the Accessibility shortcut.
- Open a supported long article and activate Reading mode with the shortcut.
- Open Reading mode settings and choose a color theme. You can also adjust font size, font type, bold, and line spacing.
The settings change how supported content is presented in Reading mode; they do not recolor the original page or other apps. See Google’s Reading mode setup and feature details.

Check home-screen and app-specific controls
Home-screen text
On Pixel phones, Wallpaper & style includes home-screen customization for fonts, icons, shapes, and colors. These are Pixel home-screen controls, not universal Android settings, and they do not guarantee that text inside apps will change. Google’s Pixel home-screen customization instructions explain the available options.
Text inside an app
Open the app’s settings and look for Theme or Display. The labels and choices differ by app. A theme may change the app’s background and other interface colors without offering a separate font-color control.

Keep contrast in mind
When choosing colors in a supported setting, contrast affects readability. Google’s Android accessibility guidance relays W3C recommendations of at least 4.5:1 for small text and 3.0:1 for large text. These are recommendations for readable interface design, not values users need to enter in Android settings. Transparency, font smoothing, and anti-aliasing can also affect how readable a color combination appears. See Google’s guidance on color contrast.
