Android has separate controls for making the whole interface larger, enlarging text, zooming content inside one app, fitting an app to a foldable screen, and changing orientation. Start by deciding which result you want: use Display size for interface elements, Font size for words, an in-app pinch or double-tap gesture for a page or image, and Auto-rotate for screen orientation.
Menu names vary by Android version, manufacturer, and device model. If a path does not match your phone, open Settings and search for Display size, Font size, or Auto-rotate. These are built-in controls, so you do not need a separate scaling app.

Choose the control that matches what you want to change
| What you want | Control | Scope | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Make icons, buttons, and other interface elements larger or smaller | Display size | System interface and supported layouts | Settings search, or on Pixel: Settings > Display & touch > Display size and text |
| Make words larger or smaller | Font size | Text in apps that honor Android’s text setting | Settings search, or the Pixel Display size and text page |
| Enlarge a map, webpage, photo, or other content in one app | In-app zoom | Only the page or app that supports the gesture | Usually pinch in/out or double-tap |
| Choose how one app uses a foldable display | Aspect ratio (experimental) | One app on Pixel Fold | Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio (experimental) |
| Switch between portrait and landscape | Auto-rotate | Most screens, subject to app support | Quick Settings or Display settings |
These controls are not interchangeable. Increasing font size does not zoom a webpage, and changing display size is not the same as forcing an app into a different aspect ratio. The fastest way to avoid an unwanted change is to match the scope of the control to the scope of the problem.
A quick decision guide
- If every icon, button, and menu is hard to see, start with Display size.
- If the layout is comfortable but the words are difficult to read, start with Font size.
- If only a map, photograph, document, or webpage is too small, use that app’s zoom gesture.
- If a Pixel Fold app is letterboxed or does not use the panel as expected, check the experimental Aspect ratio menu.
- If the phone will not switch between portrait and landscape, check Auto-rotate and then the app’s orientation support.
Make everything on the phone bigger or smaller
Use Settings search on any Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field and enter Display size.
- Open the matching result and move the slider until the preview looks right.
- For words only, return to Settings search, search for Font size, and move that slider instead.
- Review the preview before leaving the page. If you want to undo the display-size and text choices, tap Reset settings on the relevant page. That returns those preferences to the device’s original setting.
Settings search is the safest general route because manufacturers place these controls in different menus. The wording and exact location can also change between Android releases; Google’s general accessibility instructions identify some of these steps for Android 13 and later.

Move the slider gradually rather than jumping immediately to the largest value. A very large setting can make lists show fewer items, cause more wrapping, or require extra scrolling. Check a home-screen label, a settings list, and a frequently used app before deciding that the new size works everywhere.
Pixel menu path
On a Pixel phone, open Settings > Display & touch > Display size and text. The page contains separate sliders:
- Font size changes the size of words.
- Display size changes the size of interface items such as controls and other on-screen elements.
Adjust one slider at a time so you can see which setting solves the problem. If text is readable but buttons or icons are too small, change Display size rather than pushing Font size to its maximum. If the layout is comfortable but reading is difficult, change Font size first.

Use the Font size Quick Settings tile
Google documents a Font size tile for Quick Settings. After you adjust Font size through Settings, the tile is added automatically. If it is not visible, edit Quick Settings and add the tile manually. The cited Google accessibility page shows a slider that goes up to 200%; the available range and tile behavior can differ on other Android builds.
To use it, swipe down to open Quick Settings, locate Font size, and move the control to the desired level. This is useful when you need to enlarge text temporarily, such as while reading, then return to your usual setting. It changes text only; it does not enlarge icons, buttons, or the complete layout.
Understand what Display size and Font size actually change
Display size changes interface scale
Display size is the choice for a phone that feels cramped because icons, buttons, controls, or other interface elements are too small. It affects the system presentation and supported app layouts, so changing it can alter how much content fits on a screen. A larger setting may make some lists show fewer items at once; a smaller setting may fit more information but reduce readability.
Recommended Free Tools
Because Display size affects the overall layout, it can change where controls appear or make a row wrap onto two lines. It does not necessarily enlarge every piece of content inside an app. A video, image, or map may still have its own zoom behavior.
Font size changes words
Font size is the focused option when labels, messages, or body text are difficult to read. It does not guarantee that every app will enlarge its text. Some apps use their own layout or text behavior and may ignore Android’s system font setting.

Font size is therefore a text preference, not a universal magnification tool. If a small icon or touch target remains difficult to use after enlarging words, adjust Display size as well, or look for an accessibility option inside that app.
When enlarged text looks clipped
An app can place text inside a fixed or tightly constrained layout. At a large font setting, a label may wrap, overlap, or be cut off even though the system setting is working. Try a slightly smaller Font size, increase Display size if the whole interface needs more room, and check whether the app offers its own text or accessibility setting. If only one page is affected, use that app’s zoom control rather than changing the entire phone.

It can mean the app has not adapted its layout for every text size. Compare another app, a notification, and a Settings screen to see whether the change is being honored elsewhere.
Scale content inside a single app or page
Try pinch-to-zoom
Place two fingers on the content and move them apart to zoom in, or together to zoom out. This is common for photos, maps, documents, and webpages, but it is not universal. The gesture changes the content inside the current app; it does not change Android’s Display size or Font size.
Keep both fingers on the area you want to enlarge. In a map, this changes the map scale; in a photo, it magnifies the image; in a document or webpage, it may enlarge the page or its text. The exact response depends on the app, and some apps use a different gesture or disable zoom altogether.
Try a double-tap
Some supported pages, including certain maps and webpages, respond to a double-tap to zoom. A second double-tap may zoom back out or change the magnification level. If nothing happens, the app or page may not implement that gesture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not keep changing system settings when a double-tap or pinch solves the immediate problem. An app-level gesture is narrower: it leaves other apps, the home screen, and system menus unchanged.
Keep app zoom separate from system scaling
Use an in-app gesture when one image, map, or page is hard to read. Use Display size when controls throughout the phone are too small. Use Font size when the main problem is words. This keeps a one-time content adjustment from changing every screen.
If an app has its own Text size, Zoom, or Accessibility menu, that setting may be more predictable for that app than a global Android preference. The app’s own documentation or help screen is the place to check when standard gestures do nothing.

Make one app fit a foldable screen
Pixel Fold experimental aspect-ratio control
Google documents an experimental per-app Aspect ratio setting for Pixel Fold only in the cited help material. It is not a general Android option and should not be expected on a standard Pixel phone or another manufacturer’s device.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Aspect ratio (experimental).
- Select the app you want to change.
- Choose one of the available modes: App default, Full screen, or Half screen.
Only one app’s aspect ratio can be changed at a time. The app restarts when you apply a different mode, so save unsent work first. Google also warns that some apps may not be optimized for certain ratios; an app can show unusual spacing, cropped content, or a layout that is less usable in Full screen or Half screen.
Close or save drafts before applying the setting. A restart can discard an unfinished form or interrupt playback. After the app reopens, check menus, text, and important buttons in both folded and unfolded positions.
Which Pixel Fold mode to try
- App default: returns control to the app’s normal behavior.
- Full screen: asks the app to use the available display area.
- Half screen: keeps the app in a narrower presentation that may suit a folded or split-use layout.
If a mode makes the app look worse, return to the same menu and select App default. This is an aspect-ratio choice, not a zoom slider; it will not enlarge a single map or photograph inside the app.
Changing the aspect ratio for one app does not create a universal per-app scaling control on Android. On a regular phone, use the app’s own layout and zoom options, or the global Display size and Font size controls.

Turn screen rotation on or off
Use Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. You may need to swipe down again to see all tiles.
- Find Auto-rotate.
- Tap it to toggle automatic rotation. The tile may display a different state or label depending on the phone and current orientation.
When Auto-rotate is enabled, supported screens can switch between portrait and landscape as you turn the phone. When it is disabled, the screen generally stays in its current orientation.
If you cannot see the tile, edit Quick Settings and look in the available tiles. Some phones label the locked state Portrait or Landscape instead of Auto-rotate. The label describes the current lock, so read it before tapping.
Use Display settings
On a Pixel, the documented path is Settings > Display & touch > Auto-rotate screen. Other phones may place the switch under a differently named Display page, so search Settings for Auto-rotate if you cannot find it.
Changing this setting affects automatic orientation behavior; it does not force every application to provide a landscape layout. A supported video player may rotate while a banking app or a particular screen remains portrait-only.

Rotate manually while automatic rotation is off on Pixel
Pixel phones can show a rotate control in a corner when you turn the phone while Auto-rotate is off. Tap that control to rotate the supported screen once without enabling automatic rotation. This is useful when you normally want a locked portrait screen but occasionally need landscape for a video, document, or game.
The prompt is a one-time manual action for a supported screen. It does not mean that all apps will rotate, and it does not permanently switch Auto-rotate back on.
Why a screen or app may not rotate
The app or screen does not support the other orientation
Google notes that most screens can rotate, not that every screen must do so. An app can remain portrait-only, and some screens inside an otherwise rotatable app may ignore the device orientation. Test another supported app before changing additional settings.
Auto-rotate is disabled
Check Quick Settings first. If the tile says Auto-rotate is off, enable it and turn the phone sideways. If you prefer to keep it off, use the Pixel corner rotate prompt when it appears.
The setting is in a different menu
Android instructions differ across older versions, manufacturers, and models. Use Settings search for the exact terms rather than assuming the Pixel path applies to your phone.
The phone is being held almost flat
Rotation depends on the phone detecting a change in orientation. Hold it clearly in portrait or landscape and give the screen a moment to respond. If one app rotates and another does not, the difference is probably app support rather than the system switch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical sequence for accessibility and fit problems
- Identify the scope. Decide whether the problem affects the whole interface, only text, one page, one app, or orientation.
- Change the narrowest control first. Try Font size for words, an in-app gesture for a page, or Auto-rotate for orientation before changing global Display size.
- Check the preview or result. Confirm that buttons remain reachable and that important content is not cut off.
- Try the other system slider only when necessary. Display size and Font size solve different problems and can be adjusted independently.
- Undo a poor change. Use Reset settings for the display-size and text preferences, or return a Pixel Fold app to App default.
After each change, test the screens you use most: the keyboard, notifications, home screen, messaging, and a frequently used app. This catches trade-offs such as larger text that pushes a button below the visible area or a larger display size that reduces the number of list items shown.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing Font size when controls are the problem: words may become larger while buttons and icons remain too small.
- Changing Display size for one webpage: it affects the broader interface; use the page’s pinch or double-tap zoom if available.
- Assuming every app honors Font size: app implementation determines whether system text scaling is applied.
- Expecting a universal aspect-ratio menu: the documented per-app control is an experimental Pixel Fold feature.
- Assuming Auto-rotate overrides an app: an individual app or screen can still be portrait-only or otherwise fixed.
- Changing a Pixel Fold app without saving: applying an aspect-ratio mode restarts that app.
- Following a menu path from another phone: manufacturers and Android versions use different labels and locations.
- Assuming zoom and scaling are identical: a gesture inside a page does not change the size of system controls or other apps.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make everything bigger on my Android phone?
Open Settings, search for Display size, and move the slider. On Pixel, use Settings > Display & touch > Display size and text. This changes interface elements such as icons and controls, not just words.
How do I change font size on Android?
Search Settings for Font size and adjust the slider. Pixel places it under Display size and text. Google documents a Font size Quick Settings tile and a range up to 200% on its accessibility help page, although other Android builds can differ.
Best Value
Why did changing font size not affect one of my apps?
Apps decide how they implement Android text scaling. Some ignore the system Font size setting or use constrained layouts. Look for a text or accessibility option inside that app, or try a smaller setting if labels are clipped.
How do I make one webpage, map, or photo bigger without changing the phone?
Use the app or page’s own zoom gesture: pinch two fingers apart, pinch together to zoom out, or try a double-tap where supported. These gestures affect only that content.
Can I change the aspect ratio for one app on Android?
Google documents an experimental per-app Aspect ratio menu for Pixel Fold only: Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio (experimental). Choose App default, Full screen, or Half screen. The app restarts, and only one app can be configured at a time.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I stop my Android screen from rotating?
Open Quick Settings and tap Auto-rotate to turn it off. You can also search Settings for Auto-rotate. On Pixel, turning the phone while rotation is locked may show a corner rotate button for a one-time manual rotation.
Why does Auto-rotate not work in a particular app?
Auto-rotate cannot make a portrait-only app or screen provide a landscape layout. Test another app that normally supports rotation, and confirm the Quick Settings tile is enabled.
How do I undo display or text changes?
Return to the Display size or Font size page and choose Reset settings when that option is available. On Pixel Fold, return an app’s aspect-ratio choice to App default. Resetting display and text preferences returns them to the device’s original setting.
Will changing Display size make every app fit the screen?
It changes the system presentation and supported app layouts, but it does not guarantee that every app will reflow perfectly. An app may still use a fixed layout, clip enlarged text, or provide its own zoom and display controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Match the setting to the scope of the problem: Display size enlarges interface elements, Font size enlarges words, in-app pinch or double-tap zoom changes one page or image, and Auto-rotate controls orientation. The per-app aspect-ratio menu described here is an experimental Pixel Fold feature, not a universal Android setting. Because menus and app support vary, use Settings search, change one control at a time, and reset or return to App default if the result is hard to use.
