If you want the fastest win, notification sounds are the quickest to change, and Soundboard is the quickest way to use custom audio.
This guide walks through both paths. Follow the 1-minute method first; if you’re trying to play your own clips, jump to Soundboard.

What Discord Sounds You Can (and Can’t) Change
Discord lets you change how you’re notified (including an alert sound for notifications), but it doesn’t offer a general “replace every Discord notification with my MP3” option.
What you can change:
- Notification alert behavior (and the sound choice, depending on platform/version)
- Soundboard clips in supported voice features (custom audio uploaded by you or admins, if you have permission)
What you can’t change in the standard settings:
- Global Discord notification sounds to custom files (no universal “upload your own notification tone” in regular notification settings)
- Per-user sound rules that override server moderators (server-level notification overrides can still control what you hear)
The 1-Minute Method: Change Notification Sound
Use this when you want Discord to play a different alert when you get messages, mentions, or other configured notifications. The exact wording varies slightly by platform, but the path is consistent.

Changing Sounds with Discord Soundboard (Custom Audio Clips)
If your goal is to hear a specific custom audio (a quote, beat, meme sound) from your own uploads, that’s Soundboard—not notification sounds. Soundboard is meant for voice channels and requires the right server permissions.
Rank #2
- Power source type: Corded Electric
- Easy Headphone connectivity -- Compatible with all analog headsets, from standard mobile phone earbuds to gaming and studio-grade headphones; Connect your headsets with single or split stereo/mic connector easily without the use of a Y-splitter cable
- Powerful downloadable software -- control panel software gives powerful Audio Enhancements and unprecedented control; Also includes optimized profiles for multiple earphone brands
- No drivers needed -- works straight out of the box
Requirements: permissions + where the Soundboard lives
- You need access to a voice channel where Soundboard is enabled.
- You may need Soundboard permissions from the server (or be allowed by the server’s role settings).
- The Soundboard UI shows up while you’re in the voice channel.
Clip limits: Soundboard uploads have practical size/duration caps. Discord currently restricts clips to short audio segments (commonly up to around 10 seconds), so long recordings may fail to upload.
Upload/play a Soundboard clip
- Join a voice channel in the Discord server.
- Look for the Soundboard button/panel in the voice UI.
- Select Upload (or Add / + Sound, depending on the UI).
- Choose an audio file from your device.
- Wait for the upload to complete, then hit Play on the clip.
- To test, ask someone in the voice channel if they hear it clearly.
Quick Comparisons: Notification Sounds vs Soundboard
| What you want | Use this feature | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| Change the beep/alert you hear for DMs/mentions | Notification Sound | ~1 minute |
| Play your own custom audio in a voice chat | Soundboard | 1–3 minutes (depends on upload/permissions) |
| Make Discord use any file you want as a notification tone | Not supported as a general notification override | N/A |
Troubleshooting: Sound Doesn’t Change or Still Plays the Old One
If you changed settings and nothing happens, it’s usually one of three things: a platform-level mute, per-server notification overrides, or the app still using an older cached notification preference.

Check the app’s notification settings
- Confirm the Sound dropdown actually changed (don’t exit the settings screen too quickly).
- Check whether the sound setting is tied to message types (e.g., mentions vs all messages). Some versions separate these.
- For voice alerts or server pings, review per-server/channel notification overrides (Discord can silence specific channels even if global sounds are on).
Check OS volume and mute toggles
- Windows: make sure Discord isn’t muted in Volume Mixer and that system volume isn’t set to 0.
- macOS: confirm the app isn’t muted in the macOS sound output settings.
- Headphones/AirPods: confirm you’re hearing output on the expected device (switching output devices can make it feel like Discord didn’t change).
Reset notification behaviors per-server/channel
Discord frequently uses per-channel notification settings. If your DM sound changes but server pings don’t, it’s often because the channel is configured differently.
- Open the server and go to the specific channel.
- Check the channel notification mode (commonly set via a bell or Notification Settings control).
- Set it to an option that allows sounds (avoid fully silenced modes).
- Test again with an @mention.
Device-specific gotchas (iOS Focus modes, Android notification channels)
- iOS Focus: if Focus is active, Discord sounds may be suppressed even if Discord’s internal setting is correct.
- Android notification channels: Android can mute Discord categories; notification sound changes won’t matter if the channel is set to silent.
- Web: browser autoplay/notification permissions can block sound behavior in some cases.
Common Mistakes That Waste Time
- Changing Soundboard clips but expecting them to replace notification alert sounds.
- Trying to upload a long audio track and assuming the upload should work. Soundboard clips have duration limits.
- Changing notification sound but forgetting server/channel overrides are silencing mentions.
- Testing with a normal message when your settings only play sounds for mentions.
- Expecting desktop settings to automatically apply to iPhone, iPad, or Android—Discord settings can differ per platform.
Bottom Line
If you want a fast change that actually affects what you hear right away, update Discord Notifications → Sound on your platform, then test with a DM or @mention. That’s the quickest “change in 1 minute” path.

Why did my notification sound change, but I still hear nothing?
Check OS-level mute/volume and notification permissions (especially iOS Focus and Android notification channels). Also confirm the message type you’re testing (DM vs mention) matches the sound behavior you changed.
Can I use my own file as a notification sound?
Discord’s standard notification sound settings don’t provide a “upload any MP3/WAV as notification” feature. For custom audio, use Soundboard in voice channels.
Why can’t I see the Soundboard upload button?
You’re likely not in a voice channel with Soundboard enabled, or your role doesn’t have Soundboard permission. Join the target voice channel and check your server’s permissions.
