How to Change Bluetooth, Audio, and Noise-Control Settings for Beats Headphones

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by identifying two things: your exact Beats model and the device it is connected to. An iPhone, Mac, Android phone, Windows PC, or another Bluetooth host uses a different settings path, and Beats earbuds and headphones do not all offer the same controls. Connect the Beats first, then open the settings for that connected product.

Bluetooth settings control pairing and connection. Playback, listening-mode, button, microphone, call, ear-detection, Spatial Audio, and head-tracking settings are separate and appear only when your model and host support them.

Before changing anything: identify the model and host device

Look at the product name shown in Bluetooth settings or in the Beats app. The current Apple guide covers products including Beats Fit Pro, Beats Flex, Beats Pill, Beats Solo 4, Beats Solo Buds, Beats Studio Buds +, Beats Studio Pro, Powerbeats Fit, and Powerbeats Pro 2, among others. A legacy model may use different labels or expose fewer controls.

Also identify the host: iPhone or iPad, Mac, Android, Windows PC, or another Bluetooth device. Apple’s routes differ between iOS/iPadOS and macOS, while Android settings are managed through the Beats app. If a menu named below is missing, treat that as a model, software-version, or platform limitation rather than as a pairing failure.

What determines the controls you will see?

Three variables determine the available settings: the Beats model, the host platform and operating-system version, and the activity or content in use. A pair of earbuds may expose independent left and right assignments, while an over-ear model may expose one physical button. Noise-control choices require compatible microphones and firmware; ear detection requires compatible sensors; Spatial Audio requires compatible hardware, software, apps, and content. The Beats app displays only controls supported by the connected product.

Do not use a button sequence from one model on another. For example, Apple’s pairing instructions describe holding a case system button for supported earbuds, holding the power button for Beats Flex or Solo 4, and holding the system button on Beats Studio Pro. Those examples are not a universal reset or pairing procedure.

Pair Beats before opening their controls

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the Beats into discovery (pairing) mode. The action is model-specific: supported earbuds may require holding the case system button; Beats Flex or Solo 4 may require holding the power button; Beats Studio Pro uses its system button.
  3. Follow the setup prompt, or tap the Beats name in the Bluetooth list.

After the first setup, Apple-account devices can automatically pair when signed in to the same Apple Account. That behavior is not a universal cross-platform rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the Beats in discovery mode using the instructions for that model.
  3. Select the product and click Connect.

You can later reach device details by selecting the Beats name in the System Settings sidebar, or by returning to System Settings > Bluetooth.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the Beats in discovery mode and select them when they appear, or accept the pairing prompt.
  3. Install or open the Beats app. If the device page is not already open, open the app menu and choose My Beats. The app also provides Connect Your Beats.

Google-account devices may automatically pair after initial setup when signed in to the same Google Account. This account-based behavior should not be assumed for every phone or for Apple-to-Android use. Apple describes the Android app as: “The Beats app is not a music player — it’s used in addition to your music player of choice, such as Apple Music.”

Windows PC or another Bluetooth host

Put the Beats in discovery mode and use the host’s own Bluetooth-add-device procedure. Apple names a Windows PC as an example of another Bluetooth-enabled host, but the exact screens and button labels belong to that operating system. If the product never appears, repeat discovery mode using the model-specific instructions rather than holding a random button sequence.

Where to change connected Beats settings

Host Settings route after connection Noise-mode shortcut
iPhone or iPad Open Settings and tap the connected Beats name near the top. The controls vary by product. Open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, tap Listening Mode, then choose a supported mode.
Mac Open Apple menu > System Settings, then select the Beats name in the sidebar. Bluetooth details are also under System Settings > Bluetooth. Use the listening controls shown for the connected, compatible product and content.
Android Open the Beats app, choose My Beats from the menu if needed, and scroll through the connected product’s settings. Tap the displayed noise-mode button or Noise Control menu and choose a supported mode.
Other Bluetooth host Use that device’s Bluetooth and audio settings. Product-specific Beats controls may not be exposed. Use a supported physical control if configured; otherwise use the host or app when available.

How do I change Bluetooth settings on my Beats headphones?

Bluetooth settings are for making or removing the connection, not for selecting Noise Cancellation or changing what an earbud press does. On iPhone and iPad, use Settings > Bluetooth; on Mac, use System Settings > Bluetooth; on Android, use Settings > Connections > Bluetooth or the Beats app’s connection flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To switch to a different host, disconnect or forget the Beats from the current host, put them into discovery mode, and select them on the new host. If you choose to forget the product, you will need to pair it again. The discovery button or case action is not universal, so follow the instructions for your exact model.

If the product is listed as connected but audio is still coming from the phone, open the host’s sound-output controls and select the Beats explicitly. Bluetooth connection status and audio routing are related but separate: a successful pairing does not guarantee that an app has selected the headphones as its output.

How do I turn noise cancellation on or off on Beats?

On supported products, Apple names three listening modes:

Mode What it does
Noise Cancellation Blocks external noise to help you focus.
Transparency Lets surrounding sounds reach you while wearing the Beats.
Off Turns off those listening modes.

These modes require hardware support. Do not expect Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Off on every Beats headphone or earphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Connect and wear the Beats.
  2. Open Control Center.
  3. Touch and hold the volume control to expand it.
  4. Tap Listening Mode.
  5. Choose Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Off if those choices are shown.

You can also open Settings, tap the connected Beats name, and use the product’s available noise-control setting.

On Android

  1. Open the Beats app and go to My Beats.
  2. Scroll to the connected product’s controls.
  3. Tap the displayed noise-mode control or Noise Control.
  4. Select Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Off when available.

If the control is absent, the model, app version, or connection may not support it. Check that the product shown in My Beats is the one you are wearing.

How do I switch Beats to Transparency mode?

Use the same listening-mode menu: Control Center’s expanded volume control on iPhone or iPad, or Beats app > My Beats > Noise Control on Android. Select Transparency. A physical press-and-hold can do the same thing only after you assign that action to Listening Mode or Noise Control, and only on a compatible product.

Customize the press-and-hold button or earbud action

On supported Beats, a press-and-hold action can be assigned to listening-mode switching, Siri or another voice assistant, or volume. The available assignments depend on the model and host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assigning an earbud on Apple devices

  1. Connect the Beats and open Settings.
  2. Tap the Beats name near the top.
  3. Open the control or press-and-hold setting shown for the product.
  4. If the earbuds are independently assignable, choose Left or Right.
  5. Select Listening Mode, the voice-assistant option, or volume.

When volume control is enabled on products with two assignable earbuds, the opposite volume action is automatically assigned to the other earbud. Assigning volume can remove listening-mode switching and Siri or voice-assistant access from that control.

Assigning controls on Android

Open Beats app > My Beats and scroll through the controls displayed for the connected product. Change only the actions the app offers; unsupported controls are not hidden settings that can be enabled manually.

Important limitation of the mode cycle

The press-and-hold cycle includes only the modes selected in its mode list. Apple notes that Off is not enabled by default in that cycle. To cycle through Off, Transparency, and Noise Cancellation, edit the listening-mode list and select Off. If Off is not selected, the physical action will skip it even though Off may still be available from the on-screen menu.

Choose the assignment based on how you use the Beats. Listening Mode is useful when you move between a noisy commute and a conversation; volume assignment is useful when the host is out of reach; a voice-assistant assignment preserves hands-free access. On a two-earbud product, check both Left and Right after saving because the second earbud may receive an automatic opposing volume command.

Audio, microphone, calls, and ear detection

The connected Beats page may expose controls beyond Bluetooth and noise modes. The exact list is model-dependent.

  • Microphone: Some products let you mute or unmute the microphone or choose which microphone is active.
  • Calls: Supported models may offer call-ending actions or related call controls.
  • Automatic ear detection: The Apple guide identifies Beats Fit Pro, Powerbeats Fit, and Powerbeats Pro 2 for this setting.
  • Automatic play/pause and call answering: The guide identifies these as Beats Flex features.

On Android, these options appear in My Beats only when the connected product supports them. Their absence does not indicate that the app is malfunctioning.

For calls, verify both the playback output and the microphone input. A host can send music to the Beats while using a different microphone, particularly when several Bluetooth or built-in audio devices are available. If callers cannot hear you, inspect the active-input choice before resetting the headphones.

Spatial Audio and head tracking on compatible Apple setups

Spatial Audio is a separate audio feature, not a universal Beats equalizer. Compatible hardware, software, apps, and content are required. The available choices documented for Mac are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Behavior
Off Disables Spatial Audio.
Fixed Uses Spatial Audio without head tracking.
Head Tracked Uses Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.

Open the audio controls for the connected Beats on the Mac and choose the option shown for the current app and content. When the content is not Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, Apple says the control may be labeled Spatialise Stereo. Not every app or track exposes the feature, and the reviewed official instructions do not establish a universal Beats EQ setting.

If you see only Off or no Spatial Audio control, check the content first. The feature is not guaranteed for every app or track, and a normal stereo stream may present Spatialise Stereo rather than the Dolby Atmos choices. This limitation is about content and software compatibility, not necessarily a fault in the headphones.

Requirements, costs, and account behavior

This settings task uses an existing pair of Beats, a compatible host device, and the relevant Bluetooth settings or Beats app. No additional hardware, accessory, repair part, or paid tool is required by the documented setup. The Android app supplements your music player; it does not replace that player.

Account-based automatic pairing is platform-specific. Apple-account devices can share a pairing after initial setup within Apple’s ecosystem, and Google-account devices may do the same within supported Google-account setups. Do not expect an Apple Account to automatically pair Beats to Android, or a Google Account to do so across Apple devices.

Why won’t my Beats connect or play audio?

Work through these checks in order. They address connection, routing, interference, and pairing separately.

  1. Bring the devices close: Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the Beats and host within 30 feet during checks. This is a troubleshooting distance, not a guarantee of universal Bluetooth range.
  2. Remove interference: Move away from other Bluetooth devices, microwaves, wireless routers, and nearby electronics.
  3. Check power: Confirm that the Beats and host are turned on and charged.
  4. Check audio routing: Make sure the Beats are selected as the sound output and, for calls or recording, the intended microphone input.
  5. Check both volume controls: Raise the host volume and the Beats volume where the model provides a separate control.
  6. Try downloaded audio: Play a downloaded track instead of streaming to rule out a network or app problem.
  7. Forget and pair again: Remove the Beats from the host’s Bluetooth list, put them back into discovery mode, and pair them again.
  8. Reset the product: If reconnection still fails, follow the reset procedure for the specific Beats model, then pair it again.

If the Beats connect but a setting is missing, return to the model and platform checks at the start of this guide. A missing Listening Mode, ear-detection, call, microphone, or Spatial Audio control usually means that the feature is not supported in that combination of product, operating system, app, or content.

When the Beats appear but will not finish pairing

Cancel any half-completed pairing prompt, turn Bluetooth off and on again, and put the Beats back into discovery mode. Keep only the intended host nearby during the attempt when possible; another remembered phone or computer can reconnect first. If the old entry remains but does not connect, forget it and start a fresh pairing rather than repeatedly tapping a stale entry.

When only one earbud works

Confirm that the connected product shown in the host or My Beats is the pair you are wearing, check charge for both earbuds and the case, and re-establish the Bluetooth connection. If the problem persists, use the model-specific reset procedure. Do not assume that a missing left/right control means the earbuds are defective; independent assignment is available only on selected products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick decision guide

Your goal Use this route
Pair for the first time Host Bluetooth settings, with the Beats in model-specific discovery mode.
Open product controls on iPhone or iPad Settings > connected Beats name.
Open product controls on Mac Apple menu > System Settings > Beats name in the sidebar.
Open product controls on Android Beats app > My Beats.
Switch Noise Cancellation or Transparency on iPhone/iPad Control Center > touch and hold volume > Listening Mode.
Switch noise modes on Android My Beats > displayed noise-mode control or Noise Control.
Change a press-and-hold action Connected Beats settings, then choose the supported earbud or button assignment.
Fix a connection that fails Check distance, interference, power, routing, volume, downloaded audio, re-pairing, and finally the model-specific reset.

What changes by model and software version

Beats settings are not a single universal menu. Controls can change with the product, operating-system release, Beats app version, account setup, and the app or audio content being used. The Apple guide’s named product examples show why a button sequence or feature list for one model should not be applied to another. Use the exact model instructions whenever the stated button, menu, or mode is absent.

Apple’s official pages and menu labels can change with software releases. If your connected product appears but a documented control does not, update the host and Beats app where your platform provides updates, reconnect, and check the model-specific support instructions before assuming the hardware is defective.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change Bluetooth settings on my Beats headphones?

Pair or forget the product in the host’s Bluetooth settings: Settings > Bluetooth on iPhone or iPad, System Settings > Bluetooth on Mac, or Settings > Connections > Bluetooth on Android. Noise modes and button assignments are changed from the connected Beats controls, not from the basic Bluetooth list.

How do I turn Noise Cancellation off on Beats?

On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, tap Listening Mode, and choose Off. On Android, open Beats app > My Beats, open the displayed noise-mode control or Noise Control menu, and choose Off when the product supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I switch Beats to Transparency mode?

Use Listening Mode in the expanded Control Center volume control on iPhone or iPad, or the Noise Control control in Beats app > My Beats on Android. Transparency appears only on compatible products.

Why is Listening Mode missing?

Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off require hardware and software support. Confirm that the correct Beats product is connected, then check its model-specific settings. A product that lacks the feature will not show the menu.

Can I make a press-and-hold cycle through Off, Transparency, and Noise Cancellation?

Yes, on supported products. Edit the listening-mode list and select all three modes. Off is not enabled in the press-and-hold cycle by default, so it must be added explicitly.

What happens if I assign volume to an earbud?

On products with two independently assignable earbuds, the opposing volume action is automatically assigned to the other earbud. That assignment can displace Listening Mode and Siri or voice-assistant access from the same control.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my Beats connect?

Keep the Beats and host within 30 feet while checking, remove possible interference, confirm both are charged and on, verify sound output and volume, and test downloaded audio. If needed, forget the Bluetooth entry, pair again in model-specific discovery mode, and reset the exact product as a last step.

Do Beats have a universal equalizer setting?

No universal Beats EQ control is established for these settings routes. Spatial Audio and head-tracking options are separate features, and their availability depends on compatible hardware, software, apps, and content.

Do I need the Beats app to play music on Android?

No. Apple describes the Android app as an app used in addition to your music player of choice. It provides device connection and supported Beats controls rather than replacing the music player.

The Bottom Line

Pair the Beats in your host’s Bluetooth settings, then open the connected product page: the Beats name in iPhone/iPad Settings or Mac System Settings, or Beats app > My Beats on Android. Use Listening Mode or Noise Control for Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Off when your model supports them. Button assignments, microphones, calls, ear detection, and Spatial Audio are model- and platform-dependent. If connection fails, check distance, interference, power, audio routing, and volume before forgetting, repairing, or resetting the exact Beats model.
