Android Auto does not provide a universal control for dragging, resizing, or freely rearranging every part of the car screen. The documented layout control that most directly changes what remains visible is Show quick controls for apps, found in Android Auto’s settings on your phone. For text and motion, use your phone’s Android Auto accessibility options, including Bold text, Outline text, and Remove animations. Google Maps has separate navigation-display settings that you adjust in Maps, either on the car screen while parked or in the phone app.
Menu names and availability can differ by phone, Android version, vehicle, head unit, and Android Auto software version. The steps below therefore use Google’s documented labels while avoiding a single phone-settings path that may not exist on every device.

What you can change—and what you cannot
Android Auto presents its interface on the vehicle display, but many of the controls that affect the experience are configured from the connected phone. The practical options fall into three separate groups:

Google’s screen overview describes the launcher, microphone, recent-apps area, status area, and a dashboard control. It explains the regions users see, not a user-facing editor for those regions. The recent-apps area contains recently used navigation, media, and communication apps plus one additional app; that description should not be read as permission to select arbitrary tiles or change their size. Changing a setting cannot enlarge the physical display in the dashboard. The car’s screen size, aspect ratio, and hardware remain unchanged, and the official help does not document a general zoom or free-layout mode.
Keep navigation and media controls visible with quick controls
If your goal is to see navigation directions and media controls while another app is using most of the display, enable Show quick controls for apps. Google identifies this as an Android Auto setting for keeping app controls available. It changes the interface’s quick-access behavior rather than resizing the screen.
Steps
- On the phone that connects to your vehicle, open the Android Auto app or its Android Auto settings page.
- Open Android Auto’s settings.
- Find and turn on Show quick controls for apps.
- Reconnect to the vehicle, or reopen Android Auto on the car display, if the change is not immediately reflected.
The exact location of the Android Auto settings entry can vary by phone software. If searching the phone’s Settings for “Android Auto” takes you to a system page rather than a standalone app, use that page; the setting label itself is the useful identifier. - Quick controls can make navigation and media easier to reach while a full-screen app is active.
- The option does not let you choose arbitrary screen regions, drag controls to new positions, or set independent sizes for maps, media, and communication apps.
- It does not change the physical dimensions of the vehicle display.
Improve readability and reduce motion
Android Auto’s accessibility controls are adjusted from the phone. Google documents three display-related labels: Bold text, Outline text, and Remove animations. Because Android phone manufacturers organize Settings differently, use the Settings search field or the Android Auto accessibility page rather than relying on one universal sequence of menus.
Bold text
Bold text makes Android Auto text easier to read by increasing the apparent weight of lettering. It is useful when labels, turn instructions, or app controls are difficult to distinguish at the vehicle’s viewing distance.
Outline text
Outline text adds a contrasting background treatment around text. This can improve separation between labels and the interface behind them, especially when the display is busy or the background changes.

Remove animations
Remove animations reduces sudden movement and interface animations. Choose it if transitions are distracting or if you prefer a more static interface while driving. It changes motion behavior, not the number of controls shown.

- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Use Settings search for Android Auto and open its accessibility options, or search directly for Bold text, Outline text, or Remove animations.
- Enable the option you need.
- Connect to Android Auto again or return to the car display to check the result.
A manufacturer may place these controls under Accessibility, Display, or an Android Auto-specific page, and a particular phone may not expose every option. Google’s descriptions and labels are in Accessibility with Android Auto.
Android Auto dark mode: what the official guidance confirms
Google’s Android Auto accessibility help describes dark theming as a supported feature, but the reviewed guidance does not provide one complete, universal click-by-click path for choosing a theme. Do not assume that every phone, vehicle, or software state exposes an independent switch to force a particular theme.
If you are looking for a dark appearance, first check Android Auto’s current accessibility or display-related settings on the connected phone and the vehicle display. If no theme control is shown, that absence may reflect the phone, vehicle, or software version rather than a missing step. Avoid changing unrelated display settings repeatedly: dark theming is distinct from the text and motion controls above.
Change Google Maps’ navigation display separately
Google Maps controls its own route and navigation presentation. These settings are separate from Android Auto’s global interface, so changing a Maps option will not rearrange the launcher, recent-apps area, or another media app.
When the car is parked
- Open Google Maps on the Android Auto car display while the vehicle is parked.
- Open Maps’ settings.
- Adjust the available route or display choices for navigation.
Google specifically notes that Maps settings can be adjusted on the phone while parked as well. The available labels and choices can depend on the current Maps and Android Auto software.

While navigating
Open Google Maps’ settings from the car display while navigation is active, then change the route or display option you need. Keep the vehicle stationary when interacting with the car display. The official navigation help is Get turn-by-turn navigation with Android Auto.
What Maps settings cannot do
- They do not create a global Android Auto layout editor.
- They do not resize the vehicle’s screen.
- They do not reposition controls in other Android Auto apps.
Understand the regions you see on the car display
Knowing what each region represents helps identify whether you are changing a setting or simply switching views:
- App launcher: opens compatible Android Auto apps.
- Microphone control: starts voice interaction when available.
- Recent apps area: shows recently used navigation, media, and communication apps, along with one additional app according to Google’s overview.
- Status area: presents connection or system-status information.
- Dashboard control: returns to the dashboard-style view.
These areas are part of Android Auto’s supplied interface. The documented quick-controls option can affect access to app controls, but the overview does not say that drivers can drag these regions, choose any number of tiles, or assign custom dimensions. Refer to Google’s screen overview for the named regions.
How to identify the right control for your goal
“Layout” can mean several different things. If you want navigation and music controls available while another app occupies the display, you need the Android Auto quick-control setting. If text is too thin or hard to distinguish, use the accessibility options on the phone. If the map itself looks wrong, use Google Maps settings. These controls operate at different layers and do not substitute for one another.
For example, turning on Bold text will not make a media control appear beside the map, and changing a Maps display choice will not make Android Auto labels heavier. Likewise, Remove animations can reduce movement without changing which apps appear in the recent-apps area. Classifying the symptom first prevents repeated changes to unrelated settings.

Confirm that you changed the phone-side setting
Android Auto’s documented quick-control and accessibility options are configured through the connected phone. If you changed a similarly named vehicle or phone display option, it may not affect Android Auto. Search specifically for Android Auto and verify the exact label.

Reconnect after changing an option
Some changes may not be visible until Android Auto is reopened on the car display. Disconnect and reconnect the phone, then check the interface again. This is a refresh step, not a different layout mode.

Account for device and vehicle variation
Phone manufacturer software, Android version, vehicle head unit, connection mode, and Android Auto version can change which settings are shown. A missing option is not proof that the car screen is defective, and a label may be located under a different Settings category.
Separate connection problems from layout problems
Android Auto must first be supported by both the phone and the vehicle. Google’s setup guidance covers compatibility and connection requirements at Set up Android Auto. A USB cable is a connection method; it is not a tool for changing layout, text, theme, or Maps display settings.
Do not use hardware as a layout fix
A replacement head unit, wireless adapter, or phone mount cannot provide a documented Android Auto free-layout editor. Hardware can affect whether Android Auto connects or where the phone is positioned, but it does not turn the supplied interface into a freely resizable dashboard.

A practical order for changing your display
- Decide whether the problem is app access, readability, motion, Maps presentation, or a request to resize the whole interface.
- For app access, enable Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings on the phone.
- For readability, test Bold text and, if needed, Outline text.
- For distracting movement, enable Remove animations.
- For route or map presentation, open Google Maps settings on the parked car display or phone.
- Reconnect Android Auto and check the result on the vehicle display.
- If your goal is free resizing or arbitrary rearrangement, treat that as unsupported by the documented universal controls rather than searching for a hidden drag-and-drop mode.
Safety and availability notes
Use the car display’s settings only while parked where the vehicle’s instructions require it. Android Auto’s controls are presented on a compatible vehicle display, and their availability can change with software, phone, and vehicle combinations.
