On a Chromebook, Android app permissions are managed inside the Android settings opened through ChromeOS, while Android app notifications use ChromeOS notification settings. Start by selecting the time in the lower-right corner and opening Settings. For permissions, go to Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager. For app notifications, use Settings > Apps > Notifications.
Website alerts are separate: Chrome controls them under Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications. If a menu is missing, the Chromebook may not support Android apps, an administrator may have restricted the Play Store, or a device-wide privacy switch may be blocking access.

Identify what is producing the alert or requesting access
A Chromebook can show notifications and handle permissions from three different layers. Choosing the right layer first prevents changing a setting that cannot affect the behavior you are seeing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Source or control | What it governs | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Android app | Camera, microphone, location and other permissions granted to an installed Android app; notifications generated by that app | Permissions: Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager Notifications: Settings > Apps > Notifications |
| Website open in Chrome | Push notifications requested by a website in the browser | Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications |
| Device-wide privacy control | Whether any app can use hardware such as the camera or microphone, or whether location is available at the system level | ChromeOS Privacy and security controls and any physical microphone switch |
| Do Not Disturb | Temporarily silences app notifications across the Chromebook | Select the time, open Focus, and turn on Do Not Disturb, or use the notification area |
An alert that appears while Chrome is open may still be a website notification, not an Android app notification. Likewise, granting an Android app camera permission will not override a Chromebook-wide camera block.

Change permissions for an Android app
These steps apply to Android apps installed through Google Play on a Chromebook. The exact permission categories and labels can vary by ChromeOS release, app, language and device. Use the categories displayed on your Chromebook rather than assuming every device offers the same list.
Open Android Permission manager
- Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- In the left navigation, select Apps.
- Select Manage Google Play preferences. This opens the Android settings window associated with the Chromebook.
- In Android settings, select Apps & notifications.
- Select Permission manager.
- Choose the permission category you want to inspect, such as camera, microphone, location or another category shown on your device.
- Review the apps listed as Allowed and Not allowed. Select the relevant app and move it to the appropriate status.
After you change a grant, close and reopen the Android app if it was running. Some apps request access only when a particular feature is used, so the permission may not appear until the app reaches that feature.
Decide whether to allow a permission
- Allow only when needed: Grant access when you are actively using a feature that requires it, then return to Permission manager and remove the grant if the app does not need continuing access.
- Keep denied: Leave a permission in Not allowed when the app has no clear reason to use that capability. The app may lose a feature or ask again later.
- Check the app identity: If several apps have similar names, open the one you actually use. Changing a different app’s entry will not affect the requester.
- Expect category differences: Android privacy options shown on a Chromebook are not guaranteed to match those on an Android phone. Google notes that some Android privacy and security settings may not apply or appear on ChromeOS.
When an allowed permission still does not work
An individual app grant is only one part of the decision. ChromeOS can block hardware at a higher level. For camera and microphone, inspect the Chromebook’s device privacy controls as well as the Android app entry. If the device-wide camera or microphone switch is off, access is blocked for every app regardless of the Permission manager setting. A physical microphone mute switch, when present on the Chromebook, must also be turned on.

Location has the same two-level behavior: the Android app can be listed as allowed while the Chromebook’s system location control is disabled. Turn on device-level location first, then check the app’s individual location status. If the app still cannot access the feature, look for an in-app privacy setting or an account policy imposed by your school or employer.

Change notifications for an Android app
Android app notification controls are in ChromeOS rather than in the Android Permission manager. This lets you stop one app’s banners and sounds without changing its camera, microphone or location access.
- Select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Apps > Notifications.
- Find the Android app in the list.
- Turn that app’s notifications on or off.
If the app is not listed, launch it once and check again. An app may not register its notification channel until it has been opened or has requested notification access. Also verify that you are looking at the Android app list, not Chrome’s website notification list.
Silence everything temporarily with Do Not Disturb
Use Do Not Disturb when you want a quiet period rather than a permanent per-app change. Select the time, open Focus, and switch on Do Not Disturb. Google also documents the notification area as another place to silence notifications. This global setting suppresses app notifications while it is active; it does not revoke an app’s permission to use the camera, microphone, location or other data.

Turn Do Not Disturb off when you want normal alerts to resume. If an alert remains absent after that, return to Settings > Apps > Notifications and check the individual app, then investigate whether the source is actually a website.
Manage website notifications in Chrome
Chrome website notifications are browser permissions. They do not appear in the Android app Permission manager and are not controlled by the Android app notification list.

Change the default and per-site rules
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Select Privacy and security.
- Select Site Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Choose the default behavior, then review the lists of sites allowed or blocked.
- Change the entry for the site that is sending the alert.
To restore notifications for a site you are currently visiting, open that site, select View site information beside the address, and turn on its Notifications permission. The wording of the site-information control can vary with ChromeOS and Chrome updates.
Why a website permission can disappear
Chrome may remove notification permission from sites you have not visited for a while. Google’s computer guidance describes reviewing permissions removed by Chrome through Safety Check. If a site that used to alert you is no longer in the allowed list, visit it again, review its site information, and check Safety Check for a removed grant.
If turning off an Android app’s notifications did not stop an alert, identify the alert’s source before changing more settings. A message generated by a tab or installed web application must be changed in Chrome’s Site Settings, not in ChromeOS’s Android app controls.
Understand device-wide camera, microphone and location controls
ChromeOS privacy controls can override an app-level permission. Google states that camera and microphone permissions in Chromebook Privacy controls are linked with the Android Preference Centre. That synchronization means a device-wide change can affect the status you expect to see when you inspect an Android app.

Camera
Turn on the Chromebook’s camera access in the device privacy controls before troubleshooting an Android app. If the system camera switch is off, no Android app can use the camera, even when the app is listed as allowed in Permission manager.
Microphone
Check both software and hardware. The device-wide microphone control must permit access, and any physical microphone mute switch on the Chromebook must be in the on position. A muted switch can make an app look broken even though its Android permission is correct.
Location
Location has a device-level control in addition to the Android app grant. Enable system location, then confirm the app is allowed in Android Permission manager. If either level is disabled, the app may be unable to determine your location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when Google Play settings are missing
The Manage Google Play preferences entry is available only on Chromebooks that support Android apps and have Google Play enabled. Google says that if you cannot find this option, your Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Older or unsupported hardware can therefore lack the Android settings window entirely.
Best Value
Work and school Chromebooks can have another limitation: an administrator may prevent users from adding the Play Store or downloading Android apps. In that case, only the organization administrator can change the policy. A personal Chromebook may also show different labels because of its ChromeOS version, language or account configuration.
Search ChromeOS settings when labels differ
- Select the time, then select Settings.
- Use the settings search bar.
- Search for a term such as notifications, camera, microphone, location or Google Play.
- Open the matching result and follow the available path on your device.
Settings search is useful when a menu has moved, but it cannot create a control that your Chromebook or administrator does not provide.

Do not disable Google Play as a routine fix
Turning off the Google Play Store is not a harmless reset. Google warns that disabling it erases Android app data and settings from the Chromebook. Use that action only when you deliberately accept the loss and have confirmed that your Android app data can be restored. It should not be the first response to a missing permission or notification toggle.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| An Android app cannot use the camera | The app grant is denied, or the device-wide camera control is off | Check Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager > Camera, then check ChromeOS camera privacy controls |
| An Android app cannot record sound | The app grant is denied, the device microphone switch is off, or a physical mute switch is active | Check the app’s microphone status, the device-wide microphone control and any hardware switch |
| An app cannot obtain location | System location is disabled even though the app is allowed | Enable device-level location and recheck the app in Permission manager |
| One Android app keeps showing alerts | Its ChromeOS notification toggle is still on | Open Settings > Apps > Notifications and turn off that app |
| Every app alert is temporarily unwanted | A global quiet period is needed | Use Focus > Do Not Disturb or the notification area |
| A website still sends alerts after an app toggle was changed | The alert comes from Chrome, not an Android app | Open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications and change the site’s rule |
| The Android settings path is absent | The Chromebook lacks Android app support or an administrator has restricted Google Play | Search Settings, check whether Manage Google Play preferences exists, and contact the administrator on a managed device |
| A previously allowed website is no longer listed | Chrome removed permission after the site was not visited for a while | Visit the site, inspect View site information, and review Safety Check |
A reliable workflow for privacy and notification changes
- Name the source. Decide whether the request or alert comes from an Android app, a Chrome website or the Chromebook itself.
- Change the narrowest control. Use Permission manager for one Android capability, ChromeOS app notifications for one Android app, or Site Settings for one website.
- Check the system override. For camera, microphone and location, verify that device-level access is enabled.
- Reopen the app or site. Many apps and websites apply a changed grant the next time their feature starts.
- Use Do Not Disturb only for temporary quiet. It is a global notification state, not a replacement for correcting one app’s setting.
- Use Settings search if labels have moved. Search terms can locate an available control without relying on an older menu layout.
- Stop if the control is unavailable. Missing Google Play preferences usually indicates hardware support or administrator policy, not a hidden permission switch.
How the settings interact over time
Android app permissions and ChromeOS per-app notification choices remain in effect until you change them, subject to app behavior and administrator policy. Do Not Disturb is different: it is intended as a temporary global suppression mode and should be turned off when you want alerts again.
Website permissions can also change without a manual edit because Chrome may remove grants for sites that have not been visited recently. A site that is allowed today may therefore require a new visit and permission check later.
The menu paths in this guide follow Google Chromebook Help instructions reviewed on October 13, 2026. ChromeOS updates, Chromebook model support, account type, language and organization policies can change which labels and controls appear. When the documented path is unavailable, use Settings search and verify whether Android support and Google Play are enabled before changing anything else.
