How to Change an Epic Games Display Name on a Child Account

Short answer: A child using an Epic Games Cabined Account cannot choose a custom display name. A parent or guardian must first complete Epic’s consent and account-setup process. Once the account is eligible and its email address is verified, sign in to Epic Account Settings, enter the new name in the Display name box, and select Continue. Epic allows one change every two weeks. This changes the Epic identity, not a PlayStation Network online ID or Xbox Gamertag.

Check the account state before trying to edit the name

The locked field is usually an account-eligibility issue, not a Fortnite setting or a console error. Epic uses different account states for young players, and the first question is whether the account is still Cabined.

What a Cabined Account means

A Cabined Account is created when a young player needs parental consent and the parent or guardian has not yet completed Epic’s account-setup process. Epic restricts several features while that process is pending. Selecting a custom display name is one of the restricted features, so the child cannot unlock the field by changing a parental-control toggle or by reinstalling Fortnite.

What an eligible account looks like

After the parent or guardian completes consent and setup, the account can use the normal display-name workflow, subject to two additional checks: the account email must be verified, and the account must not be inside Epic’s two-week name-change cooldown. A fully set-up account can still show a lock if either of those conditions is not met.

Complete parental consent and account setup

Consent is the gate that turns on custom display names for a Cabined Account. The parent or guardian—not the child changing a game setting—must follow Epic’s consent process and finish the requested account setup. The exact screens can vary by account state, but the goal is the same: authorize the account and provide the information Epic requires to complete setup.

What the parent should do

  1. Sign in through Epic’s account or consent flow using the parent or guardian instructions associated with the child’s account.
  2. Complete each consent step and any requested account details. Stop only when Epic indicates that the account setup is complete.
  3. Have the child sign in again after setup finishes. A sign-out and sign-in can refresh the account’s available features in the launcher or game.
  4. Return to Epic Account Settings and check whether the Display name box is now available.

If the child never received a consent request, the parent should check the email address connected to the Epic account and use Epic’s account-recovery or consent prompts rather than creating a second account. A second account will not transfer the child’s existing purchases, progress, or friends list.

Why parental controls do not directly change the name

Epic’s parental-controls area is a permissions layer. It can determine which features are available to the child, but it is not the editor for the public display name. Completing consent may make the editor available; the actual name change still happens in Account Settings.

Verify the account email address

Epic’s standard display-name workflow requires a verified email address. If the account is fully set up but the name box remains unavailable, verify the email before troubleshooting the game or console.

  1. Sign in to the Epic account with the child’s credentials.
  2. Open the account email or security section and check whether the address is marked as verified.
  3. If Epic offers a verification message, request it and open the message sent to the account’s email address.
  4. Follow the verification link, then sign out and back in to Epic Account Settings.

Use the email account that actually belongs to the Epic account. Verifying a parent’s separate Epic account will not make the child’s display-name field editable.

Change the Epic display name step by step

Once consent and setup are complete and the email is verified, the change is a short account-settings task. Perform it in a web browser or wherever Epic presents the full account portal; the in-game name screen is not the authoritative editor.

  1. Sign in to the child’s Epic Games Account.
  2. Open Account Settings.
  3. Find the field labeled Display name.
  4. Enter the desired name exactly as it should appear. Check spelling, capitalization, and numbers before submitting.
  5. Select Continue.
  6. Complete any confirmation prompt Epic displays and then reopen the account profile to confirm the saved value.

The display name is public. It can appear in the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, and Epic games on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Choose a name that does not reveal the child’s real name, school, location, age, or other identifying information.

If Epic rejects the proposed name

Epic’s Terms allow it to change a display name that is offensive or misleading, violates its Community Rules, or infringes another person’s rights. A rejected name is not evidence that the account is still Cabined. Try a different name that is clearly original, non-impersonating, and free of abusive or identifying language.

Understand the two-week cooldown

Epic permits a display-name change once every two weeks. The interval applies after a successful change, so repeatedly editing the text or signing in on another device will not bypass it.

Use the lock indicator to find the date

When the cooldown is active, Account Settings shows a lock icon beside the display-name field. Hover over the information icon next to the lock to see when the previous change occurred. The field should become available after the full two-week interval has elapsed.

What does not reset the cooldown

  • Changing the name inside Fortnite or another Epic game.
  • Linking or unlinking a console account.
  • Changing parental-control settings or the six-digit PIN.
  • Installing the Epic Games Launcher on another computer.
  • Creating a new console profile while keeping the same Epic account.

If the displayed date has passed and the field is still locked, sign out of every Epic session, sign back in to the account portal, and check the field in a current browser. If the lock remains after the date shown by Epic, use Epic Support rather than attempting repeated submissions.

Epic display name versus PlayStation and Xbox names

Many families change the Epic name and then expect the console dashboard to change immediately. These are separate identity systems. The Epic display name is controlled by Epic; a PlayStation Network online ID or Xbox Gamertag is controlled by the respective console service.

Name surface Where it is controlled What changing the Epic name does
Epic display name Epic Account Settings Updates the Epic identity used by the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, and Epic games on PC, Mac, Switch, and mobile.
PlayStation Network online ID PlayStation account settings Remains the same. A console screen can continue to show the PlayStation ID.
Xbox Gamertag Xbox or Microsoft account settings Remains the same. Xbox interfaces can continue to show the Gamertag.

On a console, the visible name can depend on which screen is displaying it and which service owns that screen. Seeing the old PlayStation or Xbox name does not mean the Epic change failed. Check the child’s Epic profile or an Epic-controlled surface to confirm the new display name.

Parental controls: what the six-digit PIN can and cannot do

Epic’s parental-controls help directs the parent to sign in to the Epic Account Portal, choose PARENTAL CONTROLS, and enter the six-digit PIN. That PIN protects availability settings; it is not a display-name editor.

When the PIN is relevant

  • Use it when a parent needs to review or change which account options are available to the child.
  • Use the consent process—not the PIN screen—when a Cabined Account still needs parental authorization and setup.
  • Use Account Settings—not parental controls—when the account is eligible and the name itself must be changed.

If the PIN is accepted but the display-name box remains locked, that result is expected when consent, email verification, or the two-week cooldown is still unresolved.

Choose a safe, policy-compliant name

Epic’s Terms describe the display name as publicly available. Epic may change names that are offensive, misleading, rule-breaking, or infringing. Young-player guidance recommends a fun name rather than a real name.

Good naming practices for a child

  • Use an invented word, hobby reference, animal, color, or fantasy character combination.
  • Leave out the child’s first and last name, initials paired with a birth year, school, team, town, or social-media handle.
  • Avoid pretending to be another player, a game employee, a public figure, or a brand.
  • Do not include insults, slurs, threats, sexual references, or wording intended to evade moderation.
  • Check that the name will still feel comfortable when displayed publicly in a friends list or forum.

Parents can help by drafting several alternatives before opening Account Settings. Because changes are limited to once every two weeks, choosing carefully prevents a child from being stuck with an unwanted name until the next eligible date.

Where the new name should appear

An Epic display-name change affects Epic-controlled surfaces. Epic identifies the Epic Games Launcher, its forum and AnswerHub, and Epic games running on PC, Mac, Switch, or mobile as places where the display name is used.

Console-owned surfaces are different. PlayStation can continue to show the PlayStation Network online ID, and Xbox can continue to show the Xbox Gamertag. Friends may therefore see two different labels for the same linked player, depending on whether they are looking at the Epic account or a console profile.

To verify the result, first reopen Epic Account Settings and confirm the saved display name. Then check an Epic-controlled game or launcher session. Do not use a console dashboard label alone as proof that the Epic account change did not apply.

Troubleshoot a locked or unchanged display name

Work through these checks in order. Each symptom points to a different control layer.

The field is locked and the account is Cabined

Cause: parental consent and account setup are incomplete. Resolution: the parent or guardian must complete Epic’s consent process and finish setup. The child cannot enable a custom name from Fortnite, the launcher, or a console.

The account is set up, but Epic asks for verification

Cause: the account email is unverified. Resolution: verify the email belonging to the child’s Epic account, sign in again, and reopen Account Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lock icon shows a recent change

Cause: the two-week cooldown. Resolution: hover over the information icon to see the last-change date and wait until the full interval expires. A second device or a different game will not shorten it.

The Epic profile changed, but PlayStation or Xbox did not

Cause: separate platform identities. Resolution: confirm the Epic name on an Epic-controlled surface. Change the console online ID or Gamertag only if that separate identity also needs to change; doing so is not part of the Epic display-name procedure.

The proposed name is refused

Cause: Epic’s naming rules can reject offensive, misleading, rule-breaking, or infringing names. Resolution: choose a non-identifying, original alternative that follows Epic’s Community Rules and does not impersonate another person or organization.

The account appears eligible, but the field remains unavailable after the date shown

Cause: the account portal may not have refreshed, or the account may still have an unresolved eligibility issue. Resolution: sign out of Epic sessions, sign in again through Account Settings, confirm the email status, and check the lock information. If Epic still shows the field as unavailable after the stated date, contact Epic Support with the account details requested by its support form. Do not create a replacement account just to obtain a different name.

Fortnite-specific questions

Is a Fortnite name different from an Epic display name?

For a child playing Fortnite through an Epic account, the name associated with the Epic account is the relevant Epic display name. The change is made in Epic Account Settings, not through a special Fortnite-only editor. On PlayStation or Xbox, the console’s own online identity can still be the label shown in some interfaces.

Will progress or purchases change?

A display-name edit is an account-name change, not a new account. Keep the same Epic account and linked platform profile while changing the field. Creating a second account to work around a Cabined restriction can separate the child from existing progress, purchases, and friends.

Parent checklist

  • Confirm whether the child’s Epic account is Cabined.
  • Complete parental consent and account setup if required.
  • Verify the email attached to the child’s Epic account.
  • Open Epic Account Settings and locate Display name.
  • Check the lock icon and information tooltip for the two-week cooldown.
  • Choose a fun name that does not identify the child and follows Epic’s rules.
  • Enter it in the display-name box and select Continue.
  • Verify the result on an Epic-controlled surface, not only on a PlayStation or Xbox screen.

The essential distinction is control: parental consent makes the feature available, Account Settings performs the Epic name change, and the console manufacturer controls its own online ID or Gamertag.
