To change a YouTube thumbnail after uploading, open YouTube Studio, choose Content, select the video, replace the image under Thumbnail, and click Save. You need a verified channel to upload a custom thumbnail. The steps differ for desktop, the Android Studio app, and Shorts, and YouTube may display a different crop for vertical videos on some mobile surfaces.
Change a regular video thumbnail on desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left navigation, select Content.
- Click the video’s title or current thumbnail to open its details.
- In the Thumbnail section, select Upload file and choose your JPG or PNG image. If YouTube offers them for the video, Get suggestions can provide automatically generated choices instead.
- Click Save.
The change applies to the existing upload; you do not need to upload the video again. YouTube describes custom video and Shorts thumbnails as a quick snapshot of the content for viewers. It also warns that a replacement can take time to appear everywhere on YouTube, so an old image immediately after saving does not necessarily mean the upload failed.
Change a thumbnail in the YouTube Studio Android app
- Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Content.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Choose an auto-generated frame, or tap Custom thumbnail and select an image stored on your phone.
- Save the edit when prompted.
This mobile workflow is for regular video uploads. The current YouTube guidance says custom Shorts thumbnails are available only in Studio on a computer, so use the desktop procedure for a Short even if you normally manage videos from Android.
Change a YouTube Short’s thumbnail
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Choose Content and then the Shorts filter.
- Select the Short to open its details.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose the image.
- Click Save.
YouTube recommends a vertical 9:16 image for an uploaded Short thumbnail. The computer-only limitation is important: the Android app’s Edit thumbnail control does not currently provide the custom-Shorts upload described above.

Thumbnail file requirements
The following limits are YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026. The dimensions are maximum recommended canvases; the minimum dimension and file-size rules still apply when you export a smaller image.

For a normal landscape video, design on a 16:9 canvas; for a Short, design vertically at 9:16. Keep important text and faces away from the edges so platform crops do not remove them. If a mobile upload is rejected at 2 MB, export a more aggressively compressed JPG while retaining the required dimensions. Desktop uploads allow up to 50 MB for videos and Shorts.
Why your thumbnail looks different on a phone
Vertical-video placement can change what viewers see. YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. Your custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.
That behavior is a placement rule, not necessarily a failed upload. Preview the design at a narrow crop and keep the central subject readable. A 9:16 asset is the safer starting point for a Short, while a standard video should use 16:9.

Account access, verification, and daily limits
Verify the channel before uploading
YouTube requires a verified account for custom thumbnails. If Upload file is missing, open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and inspect the channel’s access level.
Understand the intermediate-feature limit
YouTube classifies custom thumbnails as an intermediate feature with a limited daily allowance. Higher access can provide higher limits. If Studio reports that the daily limit has been reached, YouTube advises waiting 24 hours before trying again; repeatedly retrying during that window will not bypass the limit.
Check access before a scheduled release
Confirm feature eligibility and prepare the correctly sized file before publishing. This avoids discovering a verification or daily-limit problem while trying to replace the image immediately after upload.
Policy rules that can remove a thumbnail
Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube gives these examples of content that can lead to rejection and a strike:

Repeated offenses can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or, in serious cases, terminate the account. If an otherwise valid file is rejected, review both the technical requirements and the image’s policy compliance before uploading another version.
Optional A/B testing in Studio
Desktop YouTube Studio can test up to three title-and-thumbnail combinations when advanced features are enabled. The current eligibility exclusions are:
- Shorts
- Scheduled Live videos
- Premiere videos
If the test control is absent, check that advanced features are enabled and that the video type is eligible. For a normal, already published video, changing the thumbnail manually remains available even when A/B testing is not.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Upload file button is missing
- Verify the channel, then check YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
- Confirm that you are editing the intended video in Studio rather than a read-only view.
- For a Short, switch to Studio on a computer; custom Shorts thumbnail uploads are currently not offered through the Android workflow.
YouTube says the daily limit was reached
Stop submitting attempts and wait 24 hours, as YouTube recommends. After the wait, check feature eligibility again and submit only the final image.

The image is rejected
- Use JPG or PNG.
- Check the dimension and aspect-ratio requirements: 16:9 for standard videos and 9:16 for Shorts.
- Keep the file within the applicable limit: 2 MB for the mobile video-thumbnail workflow or 50 MB for desktop video and Shorts uploads.
- Review the image for nudity, sexually provocative material, hate speech, violence, or harmful or dangerous content.
The old image still appears
YouTube explicitly says thumbnail changes can take time to appear. First confirm that Studio accepted the save, then allow the platform time to propagate the replacement before diagnosing a technical failure.
The crop is wrong on mobile
Check whether the video is vertical and where it is being viewed. Home, Explore, and subscription pages can show an automatic 4:5 crop for vertical videos, while the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms can retain the custom image.

- Choose the correct canvas before designing: 16:9 for a standard upload or 9:16 for a Short.
- Keep the main face, product, and short text in the central safe area so a 4:5 mobile crop is less damaging.
- Export as JPG when file size is the problem; use PNG when crisp text or transparency is more important and the file remains within the limit.
- Open the target video in Studio and confirm the title before replacing the image.
- Save once, then check the watch page and the relevant mobile placement after YouTube has had time to update.
- If the channel is experimenting with packaging, use Studio’s desktop test for up to three title-and-thumbnail combinations when the video and account meet the advanced-feature requirements.
