To change a YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go Live > Stream, find Stream key, select Reset, then replace the key in the encoder that sends your video. YouTube does not promise that resetting a key during an active broadcast will keep that broadcast uninterrupted. For a 24/7 channel, arrange a monitored change window and verify the new feed in Live Control Room and on the public watch page.
What a stream key does—and what changing it does not do
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a video feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” It is separate from the server URL in the encoder: update the key field, not the server URL. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings and encoder setup instructions.

Resetting changes the credential, not your channel’s public identity. YouTube documents how to reset and replace a key, but its instructions do not say that an already-running feed will continue without interruption while the key is reset. Treat the change as a possible interruption, not as a guaranteed seamless rotation.

- Confirm the need. A compromised key is one reason to reset it. Treat the key as a secret and share it only with people who need to configure the encoder.
- Confirm access and responsibility. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot. Identify the encoder instance sending the live feed and have its operator ready to update the settings.
- Choose a monitored window. Keep the operator available in Live Control Room while making the change. Do not rely on an undocumented in-place rotation to preserve an active 24/7 feed.
- Identify the correct stream setup. YouTube allows custom reusable stream keys. Reusing a prior stream setup can also carry over its metadata, settings and key, so confirm that the encoder and selected stream use the replacement key after the reset.
Reset the key and update the encoder
- Open the stream settings. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Stream in Live Control Room.
- Reset the key. Find the Stream key section and select Reset beside the hidden key. You must be signed in as a channel owner or manager.
- Copy the replacement. Copy the newly generated key from YouTube. Handle it as a credential; avoid pasting it into chat, public notes or other places where unauthorized people could access it.
- Replace only the key in the encoder. Paste the new value into the encoder’s stream-key field. Preserve the server URL and unrelated encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses separate server URL and key fields.
- Reconnect and monitor. Start or reconnect the encoder as appropriate for its software, then watch Live Control Room for an incoming preview or status. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live; those steps are not a continuity guarantee for a stream already live.
Verify the channel is actually live
- Check ingest. Confirm that the encoder is sending and that Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Check the audience path. Open the channel and the event’s watch page, and test access on a mobile device. YouTube recommends checking event accessibility on channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. See its live streaming tips.
- Check your resilience plan separately. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming rollover to the backup. It also recommends checking local archive-file integrity and growth. These checks help evaluate broader operations; they do not make key rotation seamless.
If the stream fails after the reset
- No incoming feed or encoder startup error: Confirm that the replacement key was pasted into the correct encoder field and that the server URL was not overwritten. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance directs operators facing startup errors to get a key in Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder and start the encoder.
- The encoder signs in directly rather than using a key: YouTube directs users of software that signs into YouTube without a stream key to that software provider’s support.
- The encoder reports a feed but viewers cannot watch: Check the event’s public availability on the channel and watch page, including from a mobile device, and monitor the Live Control Room status.
- Playback returns but the archive is incomplete: Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast becomes one complete archived video. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold.
India-specific notes and broader 24/7 safeguards
YouTube’s published reset workflow does not identify a separate India-only procedure. The same Studio and Live Control Room steps apply; the available guidance does not establish an India-specific continuity guarantee or network behavior.

For an India-based channel, a UPS for the encoder and router or a secondary internet path may be optional local resilience measures, not YouTube requirements. A UPS can help keep local equipment powered through some mains interruptions, but it does not solve an internet outage or an ingest problem at YouTube. A backup encoder protects a different part of the chain. Test each measure rather than assuming one covers every failure mode.
Other operational limits matter when planning a change: YouTube’s currently undated Help guidance says livestreaming requires no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Check the current live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance if these limits affect your operation.
