Microsoft calls the “podcast” made in Copilot Notebooks an audio overview. The notebook audio player documents playback, saving to OneDrive and deletion, but not changing a sensitivity label. To relabel the audio, save it as a file, open that file in its Microsoft 365 storage location, and use the file’s sensitivity-label controls in the Details pane. The labels you can choose, and whether you may change an existing label, depend on your organization’s Microsoft Purview policy, the file type and storage service, and your permissions.
What you can and cannot label
There are two Microsoft 365 experiences that users commonly call a Copilot podcast. They are related, but their save locations and controls are not identical.

Do not assume that changing a label on the notebook, a reference document or another source automatically changes an audio file that was already saved. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish that behavior. Check and change the label on the saved audio itself.

Before you start: identify which Copilot flow you used
Copilot Notebook audio overview
In Copilot Notebooks, an audio overview turns notebook content into a conversational audio experience. Microsoft says the notebook must contain at least one reference file, such as a Word document or a OneNote page. The feature is documented in the Microsoft Copilot app and OneNote. After generation, the player lets you listen, save the audio to OneDrive and delete it. A label picker is not listed as a player action.

The feature is documented for English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Chinese. Language availability does not change the labeling procedure: the relevant control is on the stored file, not in the player.
OneDrive’s separate audio-overview flow
Microsoft also documents creating an audio overview from files in OneDrive. In that separate flow, the saved output is an MP3 in the Recordings folder. Microsoft describes the Save to OneDrive option for non-encrypted source files. Use those details only if you started the overview from the OneDrive file experience; they are not a guaranteed description of every Copilot Notebook setup.
Step-by-step: relabel a Copilot Notebook audio overview
1. Generate the overview from a supported notebook
- Open the notebook in the Microsoft Copilot app or OneNote.
- Confirm that the notebook includes at least one reference, such as a Word document or OneNote page.
- Choose the notebook’s command to create an audio overview and wait for generation to finish.
If you only see a player and no label control, that is expected from the documented Notebook workflow. Continue with the save step.

2. Save the audio to OneDrive
- In the audio-overview player, choose Save to OneDrive.
- Wait for the save operation to complete before closing the notebook or deleting the player version.
- Record the destination shown by the save confirmation, if one is displayed. The exact folder can vary with the tenant and client.
Saving creates the separate file on which you can work. The in-notebook audio object and that file should be treated as different artifacts for labeling purposes.
3. Find the saved audio file
- Open OneDrive in the account and tenant used to save the overview.
- Use OneDrive search for the audio-overview name, or browse to the location reported by the save confirmation.
- Check the file’s extension and modified time so you do not relabel a similarly named recording.
If you used the separately documented OneDrive audio-overview flow, look in the Recordings folder for the MP3. Do not apply that folder assumption to every Notebook save.

4. Open the file’s Details pane
- Select the audio file in OneDrive.
- Open Details (the information panel, usually available from the file’s context menu or the toolbar).
- Look for the sensitivity label field or the organization’s label command in that pane.
Microsoft documents manual relabeling through the Details pane for supported files in SharePoint or OneDrive. The exact wording and position of the command can differ by browser, app, service support and tenant configuration.
5. Select an allowed label and apply it
- Open the label menu in the Details pane.
- Choose the label that matches your organization’s handling requirements.
- Complete any justification prompt required by policy.
- Save or apply the change, then wait for the file view to refresh.
If the label applies encryption or other protection, the change may trigger an additional confirmation or be unavailable to you. Do not try to bypass a blocked command by downloading, renaming or re-uploading the file; those actions can conflict with policy and do not grant permission to apply a restricted label.

The same basic control can appear when the saved audio is in a SharePoint library rather than personal OneDrive. Use the supported Microsoft 365 web view for that library:
- Open the document library or OneDrive folder containing the audio.
- Select the file and open its Details pane.
- Choose the displayed sensitivity label, or the available command to change it.
- Select an allowed label, provide a required reason and apply the change.
- Close and reopen the Details pane to verify the new label is displayed.
Whether an MP3 or another audio format is labelable is determined by the service and your organization’s configuration. If the field is absent, that does not prove the file is unprotected; it means the current client, file scenario or policy is not exposing a manual label change there.
Why the label option may be missing or blocked
The audio is still only in the notebook
The Notebook player’s documented actions do not include a sensitivity-label picker. Save the overview to OneDrive first. If your organization does not permit that save action, an administrator must clarify the approved storage path.

You are looking in the wrong OneDrive location
A Notebook save and the separate OneDrive audio-overview flow do not have a universally identical destination. Search by file name and verify the account and tenant. For the OneDrive file flow specifically, Microsoft identifies the Recordings folder and an MP3 output.

Microsoft’s Details-pane instructions apply to supported SharePoint and OneDrive files. A particular audio format, synchronization client, mobile app or embedded preview may not expose the label command. Open the file in the supported web storage view and check the Details pane there.
Mandatory labeling prevents removal
A tenant can require every supported file to carry a sensitivity label. In that configuration, you may be prevented from removing the existing label, while still being allowed to change it to another permitted label. If no replacement is offered, the policy may require an administrator or a particular justification.
The desired label is not published to you
Label lists are configured by the organization. A label can be hidden, scoped to a group, restricted to particular locations or unavailable for the file’s current protection state. Choose from the labels actually presented in the menu; do not infer that a missing label is safe to apply through another application.
The label applies encryption
Sensitivity labels can apply encryption and usage restrictions. Microsoft says users need appropriate rights to change a label that applies encryption. If the current or desired label protects the file, the change can be denied even when you can edit the audio content itself.

Your permissions are insufficient
Being able to open, play or upload the MP3 does not necessarily grant permission to relabel it. You may need edit rights to the file and rights granted by the label policy. Ask the Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Purview administrator to check your permissions and the published label policy.
Encrypted sources and Copilot access
Source protection can affect generation separately from relabeling. Microsoft explains that Copilot checks access rights when it works with encrypted data. Rights such as VIEW and EXTRACT can be required; restricted rights can prevent Copilot from using the source content.
This creates two distinct checkpoints:
- Generation checkpoint: Copilot must be allowed to read and use the protected reference material.
- File-label checkpoint: after an audio file exists, you need the rights and policy authorization to change that file’s label, especially when encryption is involved.
Passing the first checkpoint does not guarantee the second. A notebook can successfully produce audio while the resulting file remains locked to its current label or unavailable for manual relabeling.

Microsoft documents inheritance for supported Copilot content-creation workflows: when new content is created from labeled source files, the highest-priority label among those sources can be inherited. Microsoft also says users can override or replace an inherited label when the configured policy permits it.
That general inheritance guidance does not establish that an audio overview still inside a Copilot Notebook has an editable sensitivity label, nor that a source notebook label will be copied to an audio file saved later. Treat inheritance as a policy behavior to verify, not as a promise about this particular audio workflow.
After saving, inspect the audio file’s own Details pane. If the label is absent, inherited differently or locked, follow the policy shown by your tenant rather than trying to recreate the label through a source document.
Verify that the change actually applied
- Refresh the OneDrive or SharePoint view and reopen the Details pane.
- Confirm that the displayed label belongs to the audio file, not a notebook reference or a similarly named document.
- If the label applies encryption, test only the access that your policy permits; do not share the file merely to test it.
- Check the file’s sharing and protection indicators before moving or downloading it.
- Tell recipients which file was relabeled if multiple copies exist. A downloaded copy, an attachment and a separately saved version may each have their own label state.
Changing one saved copy does not establish that every other copy or the original notebook audio object has changed. Verify each artifact that your workflow actually uses.
Administrator checks when users cannot relabel the audio
If the Details pane does not offer a usable label, an administrator should review the tenant’s sensitivity-label policy and the storage scenario rather than asking the user to work around the restriction. The relevant checks include:
- Whether the label is published to the user or group.
- Whether the policy requires labeling and what justification is required for a change.
- Whether the target label supports the audio file type and the OneDrive or SharePoint location.
- Whether encryption or usage rights on the existing label prevent a change.
- Whether the user has edit permission on the file and the rights needed to change a protection label.
- Whether the organization permits the particular Copilot save flow and destination.
Administrators should also distinguish a missing UI control from a denied operation. A browser or client that does not display the command may require a supported web experience; a policy denial requires a policy or permission decision.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Searching the player for a label menu: the documented Notebook player does not list one.
- Assuming the source label follows the audio: the cited inheritance documentation does not confirm that behavior for a saved audio overview.
- Using the Recordings folder as a universal rule: that location is documented for the separate OneDrive file flow, not every Notebook save.
- Confusing playback access with label-change rights: listening to an MP3 does not prove you may change an encryption-capable label.
- Removing a mandatory label: mandatory labeling can prohibit removal even when changing to another allowed label is possible.
- Re-uploading to evade a restriction: a new copy can create additional policy and audit problems and does not authorize a prohibited label.

Bottom line
For a Copilot Notebook “podcast,” first save the audio overview to OneDrive. Then select the resulting audio file, open Details, and change its sensitivity label using the options your organization allows. The Notebook player itself does not document a label-changing control. Location, file support, mandatory-label rules, encryption and permissions determine whether the change is available. Verify the label on the saved audio file, because Microsoft’s documented inheritance behavior does not prove that a notebook or source-file label automatically updates an audio copy.
