To change a Shopify product image, open Products in your Shopify admin, select the product, and edit its Media. Upload or choose the replacement, then move it to the first position to make it the main image. In the Shopify app, add media from the product screen or choose Set as default. If only one color or other variant needs a different picture, assign the image in Variants instead of changing the whole product gallery.
Choose the change you actually need
Shopify has three different image tasks. Selecting the right one prevents you from changing every customer’s view when you intended to update only one option.

Changing or removing media from a product is not the same as deleting the underlying file. Shopify says removing a file from a product does not remove it from the store.
Change the main product image in Shopify admin
- Sign in to Shopify admin and select Products.
- Open the product whose image you want to change.
- In Media, choose one of the available methods: Upload new, drag a file into the media area, select an existing media file, or use Add from URL through the existing-media picker.
- To use an existing gallery image as the main image, drag it to the first position in the media list. The first media item is Shopify’s featured or main media item, used on collection pages, the cart, checkout, and the home page.
- Save the product if Shopify presents a save control. Shopify’s product-editing guidance says saved changes take effect immediately in the online store.
Replace rather than add
If the old picture should no longer appear, add the new image and then open the old media item’s menu and remove it from the product. Removing it here affects only this product association; it does not delete the file from Content > Files.

Reorder the entire gallery
Drag media items into the order customers should see. Put the strongest product view first, because that first item becomes the featured image. Additional images remain available in the product gallery.
Change a product image in the Shopify mobile app
- Open the Shopify app and tap Products.
- Select the product, then tap the + button in Media.
- Choose a source such as your device’s photos, camera, files, or existing media, and select the image.
- Save the product.
Set a different default image
- From the product’s media area, tap View all.
- Select the image you want customers to see first.
- Open the image menu and tap Set as default.
- Save the product.
The app workflow changes the product’s default image; it does not automatically assign separate images to every variant.
Assign an image to a specific variant
Use a variant assignment when a red shirt should show a red shirt photo, while the product’s other colors retain their own images.
Desktop admin
- Go to Products and open the product.
- Scroll to Variants and open the relevant variant.
- Use the variant’s image control to select an existing product image or add the appropriate media.
- Save the product or variant when prompted.
Shopify documents individual and bulk variant-image assignment on desktop. Each variant supports one image, so choose the single picture that best represents that selection.

- Open the product and go to its Variants.
- Open the variant you want to edit.
- Choose its image and save.
A variant image and the overall featured image are separate settings. Changing the first media item does not replace the image assigned to a particular color or size.

Edit, remove, or replace an existing image
Crop or rotate an image
Shopify’s media editor supports adjustments such as rotation and crop or aspect-ratio changes. Open the image from the product or file interface, make the adjustment, and save it. If you need the unedited version preserved as a separate file, Shopify supports Save as new in file editing.
Revert an edit
Shopify documents reverting an edited image to its original. The revert cannot be undone, so download or save a separate copy first if the edited version may be needed later.
Delete a store file everywhere
Use Content > Files only when you intend to affect every location using that file. Shopify explains that editing or replacing a file there applies wherever the file is used. Replacing a file keeps its name but changes its link.

A successful replacement can look stale when another page is using an old, manually written URL.
Check the version token
Shopify gives a replaced file a version token in its URL. Shopify-rendered pages request the new URL when they load. Refresh the storefront and inspect the image address: if the version token changed, the new file was generated and the page or browser may need a fresh load.

If the token did not change
Shopify’s guidance indicates that the replacement did not save. Return to the product or file editor, upload or replace the image again, save, and check the URL once more.
Find hard-coded references
Theme code, product descriptions, marketing emails, and external sites can continue pointing to the old address. Prefer Shopify-managed references: use the media uploader for descriptions and the file_url, image_url, and asset_url Liquid filters in theme code rather than hard-coding a file URL. External pages and previously sent emails cannot be retroactively changed by editing the product gallery.

- Use a clear image that matches the selected variant and shows the item without misleading cropping.
- Preview the product page, a collection page, cart, and checkout after changing the first media item.
- Check the mobile storefront separately; theme layouts can crop or reorder media differently.
- Confirm that alt text, if your theme or accessibility workflow uses it, still describes the replacement image.
- Keep an original copy before using destructive edits or a file replacement.
- After bulk changes, open a representative product from each affected template and verify the visible first image and variant behavior.
Troubleshooting common failures
The upload control is missing
Confirm that you opened a product in Products and are looking at Media, not the store-wide Content > Files screen. On mobile, use the + button in the product’s Media section.
The image is in the gallery but is not the main image
On desktop, drag it to the first position. In the app, select it under View all and choose Set as default.
The wrong color keeps showing its image
Open the specific variant and assign its image. Do not rely on gallery order; the featured product image and the variant image are independent settings.

The old image appears only in theme content
Search the theme, description, email template, or external page for a manually pasted URL. Replace it with a Shopify-managed media reference or update the external content directly.
Replacing a file changed other pages unexpectedly
You edited the shared file under Content > Files. Restore the original if necessary, or upload a new file and associate it only with the intended product. A product-level removal does not have this store-wide effect.
The storefront does not update after saving
Verify that the product save completed, reload the page in a private window, and inspect the image URL’s version token. If it is unchanged, repeat the replacement and save operation.

Can I change a product image without changing its URL?
A product-level media replacement may produce a new version token. If code or an external page uses the old hard-coded URL, update that reference or use Shopify-managed media filters.
How many images can one Shopify variant have?
Shopify’s documented workflow assigns one image to each variant.
Does removing a product image delete it from Shopify Files?
No. Removing media from a product removes the association only; deleting or replacing the shared file is handled under Content > Files.
