How to change a Pixel Watch face and customize its complications

You can change a Pixel Watch face in seconds: touch and hold the current face, swipe left or right through the available faces, then tap the one you want. To change its appearance first, tap Edit, choose the styles and complication layouts offered for that face, and apply your choices.

You can do the same from your phone. Open the Pixel Watch app, tap Watch faces, select a face, then choose Use on watch or Edit. The exact choices depend on the face and the software running on your watch.

What you can change on a Pixel Watch

A watch face controls the visual design of the time display. Editing can change its color treatment, visual style, and the small information areas around the time. Those information areas are called complications. Google describes them as a way to show information beyond the time, such as weather or step count. See Google’s instructions for the current interface at Change the watch face, background, and other settings on Pixel Watch.

There is no single set of complication positions or choices shared by every face. A selected face may offer several layouts, while another may expose different positions or none at all. The editor shows the styles and layouts that are compatible with the face you are editing, so the controls on your watch may not exactly match a friend’s watch or a screenshot from another software release.

Before you start

Keep the watch awake on its current face before opening the picker. If you plan to use the phone app, open the Pixel Watch app that is connected to the watch you want to control. For a Photos face, Google recommends current versions of the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and watch. Updating first can prevent a missing Photos control from being mistaken for an unsupported face.

It also helps to decide whether you want a face for appearance, at-a-glance information, or personal photos. That choice matters because the face determines which layouts and complication positions are available. A design that looks ideal in the gallery may not provide the slot needed for your preferred metric.

Change the face directly on the watch

Use the face picker

  1. Wake the Pixel Watch and display the current watch face.
  2. Touch and hold the current face until the face-selection view appears.
  3. Swipe left or right to browse the faces available on the watch.
  4. Tap the face you want to use.

The selected face is applied after you tap it. If the face offers an edit control in the selection view, you can edit it before applying it rather than accepting its default appearance.

If a face is difficult to select

Start the gesture on an open area of the face and hold your finger still long enough for the picker to appear. A quick tap only interacts with the current face; it does not open the face browser. Once the picker is open, swipe horizontally rather than vertically so you move through faces instead of leaving the picker.

If you are trying to compare several designs, pause briefly on each preview. The preview tells you whether the design has visible complication areas, but the actual editor is the reliable place to see every style and layout offered by that face. Apply a candidate and check it in normal use before deciding that it is the best fit.

Change or edit the face from your phone

Apply a face from the Pixel Watch app

  1. Open the Pixel Watch app on the paired phone.
  2. Tap Watch faces.
  3. Swipe left or right to browse the available designs.
  4. Tap a face to view its controls.
  5. Choose Use on watch to apply it immediately, or choose Edit to customize it first.

The phone route is useful when you want to browse without covering the watch screen with your finger. It also lets you make selections while the watch is on your wrist and difficult to reach. The labels above are the Google-documented path; minor wording or placement can change with an app update.

When the phone and watch show different choices

The watch face gallery and editor are tied to the connected watch and its current software state. If a design appears on one screen but not the other, check that the Pixel Watch app is paired with the intended watch and allow the app to finish communicating with it before judging the galleries. Google does not publish a complete face-by-face, model-by-model compatibility matrix, so an absent design is not proof that the watch is malfunctioning.

Do not assume that selecting a face in the phone preview has already changed the watch unless you chose Use on watch or completed the app’s apply control. Likewise, opening Edit is a customization step, not a promise that every design supports the same controls. Read the labels shown for the selected face and use the option that matches your goal.

Edit colors, styles, and complication layouts

Open the editor on the watch

  1. Touch and hold the current watch face.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Swipe left to move through the editor’s style and complication-layout pages.
  4. Choose from the options shown for that face.
  5. Finish the editor using the on-screen confirmation control, if one is displayed.

Google’s documented workflow is intentionally face-specific: swipe through the styles and layouts that the selected face provides. Do not expect every face to expose a color palette, the same number of complication positions, or the same data sources.

Edit from the phone

In the Pixel Watch app, open Watch faces, select the face, and tap Edit. The app presents the editable controls for that face. Pick a style, color treatment, or complication arrangement, then apply the changes through the app’s on-screen controls. If you only want the unmodified design, use Use on watch instead.

Work through the editor in order

Start by reviewing the available styles, then inspect the complication layouts. This prevents you from spending time choosing data for a position that disappears when you switch layouts. Once you settle on a layout, review every position the editor exposes and select only the information that is useful at a glance.

Some faces make the time the dominant element, while others give more visual space to widgets. A larger complication area can be easier to read, but a denser arrangement may let you see more information without opening apps. The correct choice is the one that remains clear on the actual watch, not merely in the editor preview.

How complications work

A complication is a compact information widget embedded in a watch face. Depending on the face, it can show data such as a step count or weather information without requiring you to open an app. Google’s wording is: “Add complications if you want to display information beyond the time, like weather or step count, on the watch face.” The available complication slots and choices are determined by the face and the layout you select.

Choose a layout before choosing data

When a face offers multiple layouts, first decide where you need information: for example, a larger area for a frequently checked metric or a small corner for a less important item. Then browse the layouts in the editor. A layout with fewer positions may look cleaner but provide less information at a glance; a denser layout may show more data while making each item smaller. These are design choices rather than universal Pixel Watch settings, because each face exposes its own arrangement.

Google Pixel Watch 4 (45mm) - Smartwatch - Moonstone Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

Keep the information hierarchy clear

  • Use the most visible position for the metric you check most often.
  • Place secondary information in smaller positions only when it remains legible at a glance.
  • Prefer a layout that leaves enough visual separation between the time and the widgets.
  • After applying the face, look at it in normal lighting and at arm’s length; a choice that looks clear in the editor may be harder to read during movement.

Remember that a complication is not a separate universal control that can be added to any face. The face and its selected layout establish the available positions. If a desired data source is not listed, first try another layout within that face. If it still does not appear, the face may simply not support it in the current software.

Use the Photos watch face

Google says the Photos face can use up to 30 photos from a personal album. The limit is a maximum, not a requirement: you can use fewer images if you want a simpler rotation. The Photos setup is available through Google’s phone and watch flows, so browse to the Photos face in the face picker or in the Pixel Watch app’s Watch faces area and follow the photo-selection controls shown there.

Prepare Photos before troubleshooting

Google advises having current versions of the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and the watch when setting up the Photos face. If the Photos face or its photo-selection control is missing, update those apps and try the setup again. The exact controls can differ as the apps change, but the 30-photo maximum remains the stated capability in Google’s help documentation.

Choose images that work as a face

Portraits and other subjects with open space around the edges generally leave the time easier to read than images filled with fine detail. If the face crops an image in an unhelpful way, try another photo from the album or use a different image set. This is a composition decision, not a separate watch setting.

You do not need to fill all 30 available positions. A small group of photos can make the rotation feel more consistent, while a larger album gives greater variety. Whichever size you choose, inspect the result on the watch because the watch-face treatment, rather than the phone’s original image view, determines how the time and image share the screen.

Add weather or UV information safely

Weather is a common complication example, but Google places a specific software requirement on its Pixel Weather service: Pixel Weather is compatible only with Pixel Watches running Wear OS 6 or newer. Google also notes that Pixel Weather and some related features may not be available in every country or language. The current eligibility and setup details are in Check the weather on your Pixel Watch.

On an eligible watch, edit a face that provides a suitable complication slot and choose Weather or UV Index from the choices shown. If neither option appears, the cause may be the selected face’s layout, the watch’s Wear OS version, or regional and language availability. The absence of a Weather choice does not mean every other complication is unavailable.

Google | Pixel Watch | Android Smartwatch with Fitbit Activity Tracking | Fitness and Sleep Tracker with Heart Rate Tracker | 41mm (Bluetooth, Matt Black case w/Black Active Band) (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
  • Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
  • Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
  • Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
  • Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist

Do not use the presence of a generic complication slot as proof that Pixel Weather will work there. The slot only indicates that the face accepts some supported data source; the Weather and UV Index entries remain subject to the Wear OS, country, and language qualifications. Check the entries visible in the editor after selecting the face and layout you actually want to use.

Troubleshoot a missing face or complication

What you see Likely explanation What to do
The face picker never opens The watch registered a tap rather than a long press. Return to the current face, touch and hold an open area, and wait for the picker before swiping.
A face has no Edit control That face may not expose editable styles or complication layouts in the current software. Apply the face as provided, or browse to another face that shows Edit.
A complication position you expected is absent The selected face or layout does not include that slot. Swipe through the layouts offered for the face; if none has the position you need, select a different face.
The phone app does not show a face you saw on the watch The two views may be showing different connected-device or software states. Confirm that the Pixel Watch app is paired with the intended watch, let it finish loading, and check the gallery again.
The Photos face or photo control is missing The required phone or watch apps may not be current. Follow the update-and-retry guidance in the Photos section, then reopen the face picker.
Weather or UV Index is not listed Availability depends on the face layout and on Pixel Weather eligibility. Check the Wear OS and regional requirements in the Weather section, then try an eligible face layout.

Avoid changing several variables at once

If a complication is missing, keep the same face and test its other layouts first. Then test a different face if necessary. This makes it easier to tell whether the limitation comes from the layout or from the service itself. For Photos, update the relevant apps before trying a different album or another face.

A practical way to choose a face

Start with the information you actually check

Decide whether your priority is a clean time display, activity information, weather, or a rotating set of personal photos. This prevents you from choosing a face for its appearance and discovering later that it has no suitable complication position.

Compare layouts within the same face

Use the editor’s horizontal swipe to inspect every style and complication arrangement offered by the design. Keep the face if one of those layouts provides the right balance of readability and information. If the needed position never appears, changing to another face is more effective than repeatedly reopening the same editor.

Apply, then verify on the actual watch

After applying the face, check the real display rather than relying only on the phone preview. Confirm that the time, labels, and complication values are readable from your normal viewing distance and that the arrangement still works when the watch is in motion.

What is and is not universal

The basic selection gesture and the Pixel Watch app path are consistent: hold and browse on the watch, or open Watch faces in the app. The editable details are not universal. Google’s guidance does not enumerate every face, complication slot, watch model, or software-version combination. Treat the controls visible for your selected face as the authoritative list for that watch at that moment.
