If your license covers the stream and its archive—or the match is genuinely mistaken—you can dispute it in YouTube Studio with a concise explanation. The claimant reviews the dispute; YouTube says it cannot determine what was properly licensed. Save the claim details and your supporting records before deciding whether to dispute or appeal.
Check what was claimed before responding
Open the affected item in YouTube Studio and inspect the claim itself, rather than relying only on an email or viewer report. Record the claimant, the claimed content, the affected timestamp or segment, and any policy shown. Confirm whether the claim applies to the live broadcast, its archive, or both; check each item separately.

Where feasible, save screenshots or notes before you remove or replace material. This is practical recordkeeping, not a YouTube-mandated formality. The live-specific distinction and documentation suggestions come from StreamNeo’s guide to disputing a Content ID claim on a live stream; verify the actual status in Studio.

A Content ID match and your right to use the footage are separate questions. Find the licensing record for the exact asset and read its terms. A receipt can help identify a transaction, but it does not by itself establish that every use is permitted.

- STUNNING HD VIDEO QUALITY — Live stream and record in stunning 1080p HD resolution with crisp, detailed imaging, right out of the box.
- STREAM ANYWHERE — Go where the story takes you. Stream live from anywhere in the world using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or even your smartphone’s LTE network.
- INTELLIGENT APP CONTROL — Wirelessly control your Mevo and create compelling content with features like Auto-Director, all from your smartphone.
- MULTICAM MADE EASY — Connect up the three Mevo Start cameras to easily create broadcast-quality streams with multiple angles.
- ADVANCED ONBOARD AUDIO — Capture clean, clear audio using the built-in microphone or connect external audio sources for advanced setups.
- Asset and licensor: Confirm that the licensed file is the same footage, from the same licensor, as the material in the claim. Check whether the match could instead be a different recording, edit, or segment.
- Livestream and archive: Check whether the license permits public livestreaming and retaining or publishing the recording after the broadcast.
- Territory and term: Confirm where the footage may be shown and whether the license remains in force for the relevant period.
- Monetization and conditions: If the stream is monetized or used commercially, check whether that is permitted. Also check attribution and any other license conditions.
This checklist helps you assess your evidence; YouTube does not require these particular items as form fields. Do not assume that a license for one use automatically covers a livestream, an archive, every territory, or monetization.
Understand why stock footage can trigger a claim
A claim can be mistaken even when the footage is licensed, but a license does not automatically make a Content ID match wrong. YouTube’s reference-content rules require sufficient and exclusive rights in the territories where content is claimed, and non-exclusively licensed content is not eligible as a reference. YouTube also routes some content licensed at scale for review. These rules concern what may be supplied as reference content; they do not decide whether your particular license covers your stream or whether a specific claim is erroneous. See YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance.

Submit a dispute in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio on desktop, open Content and find the claimed video or stream archive.
- Open the claim details for the relevant item and choose the dispute action shown for that claim.
- Select the reason that accurately describes your situation, such as having the necessary rights or believing the content was misidentified. Do not claim ownership if your basis is a license.
- Write a short, factual explanation. Identify the footage, state what permission you hold and which use it covers, identify the claimed segment, and explain why the claim is mistaken.
- Submit only if your explanation matches the license and other evidence you have. Save a copy of the explanation and the submission details.
YouTube says the claimant reviews the dispute because YouTube cannot determine what content was properly licensed. Do not dispute solely because you credited the owner, possess a copy, or chose not to monetize; YouTube identifies those as invalid reasons. The available reason and exact claim details can vary, so follow what Studio displays. See YouTube’s current dispute instructions.
Know the deadlines and risks before appealing
For a standard dispute, the claimant has 30 days to respond. If the claim is reinstated, check whether Studio offers an appeal and consider the consequences before proceeding. A claimant has 7 days to respond to an appeal. YouTube offers Escalate to Appeal only for claims that block the video; choosing it skips the initial dispute period.

If an appeal is rejected, the claimant may submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube finds that request valid, the video is removed and the channel receives a copyright strike. Under YouTube’s current appeal guidance, a scheduled removal request gives you 7 days to cancel the appeal before removal. Appeal only when you have a supportable rights basis and are prepared for this risk. See YouTube’s appeal instructions.
| Response | When it may fit | Timing and exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute | You have rights for the actual use, or a concrete reason the match is mistaken. | The claimant has 30 days to respond. The claimant reviews the dispute; YouTube does not determine whether your footage was properly licensed. |
| Appeal a reinstated claim | You remain confident the claim is invalid and can support that position. | The claimant has 7 days to respond. Rejection may be followed by a removal request and, if valid, a strike. |
| Escalate directly to appeal | The claim blocks the video and Studio offers this option. | Skips the initial dispute period but carries the appeal risk. |
| Contact the licensor, remove, or replace the footage | The license is unclear, does not cover the use, or the uncertainty is not worth keeping the material on air. | No universal resolution time or effect on a live claim is established. Contacting the licensor or replacing unclear material is practical guidance, not a guaranteed outcome. |
If the stream is still live
Do not assume that submitting a dispute will immediately restore every viewer’s access or settle what happens to the archive. Check the live broadcast and archive separately in Studio. If the claimed footage is central to the broadcast and the rights are unclear, consider an operational fallback while you contact the licensor. There is no universal guarantee established here about how quickly a live claim will change after a dispute.

If you cannot confirm the rights
Pause before escalating. Ask the licensor whether your license covers the specific livestream, archive, territory, term, and monetized or commercial use at issue. If it does not—or you cannot establish that it does—removing or replacing the footage may be safer than making a weak dispute. The right choice depends on your license and circumstances.
