How to Center a Window in Windows

For an exact visual center, restore the window if it is maximized, resize it, and drag its title bar until it sits in the center of the usable desktop. Windows has no universal one-key command that centers every active window. Use Snap when you want a structured side, corner, or multi-window layout, and use FancyZones when you need a reusable custom zone in the middle of the screen.

The instructions below apply to current Windows desktop behavior. The apparent center can differ from the physical panel center because of the taskbar, display scaling, monitor arrangement, and restrictions imposed by the application itself.

What Windows can and cannot do

Windows provides built-in commands for maximizing, restoring, snapping, and moving windows between monitors, but Microsoft’s documented keyboard shortcuts do not include a dedicated center-active-window command. A window that is exactly centered therefore requires either manual placement or a custom layout tool.

There are three practical meanings of center:

  • Exact single-window center: one floating window is visually centered in the usable desktop area. Manual title-bar dragging is the universal method.
  • Balanced workspace: windows are arranged symmetrically or in a predictable grid. Snap is built into Windows and handles this without extra software.
  • Repeatable custom center: a window is repeatedly placed in the same middle zone. FancyZones in Microsoft PowerToys can save that arrangement.

Choose the first option for a one-off dialog or utility, the second for side-by-side work, and the third when you perform the same placement many times.

Center one window exactly with the mouse

This is the most dependable approach because it does not depend on a particular Windows edition, keyboard layout, or application framework.

  1. Activate the target window. Click anywhere inside it so the title bar and window controls belong to the application you want to move.
  2. Restore it if it is maximized. Click the Restore Down button beside the Close button. You can also press Windows+Shift+Down Arrow, which restores a snapped or maximized window.
  3. Set a useful size. Move the pointer to an edge or corner until the resize cursor appears, then drag. A very large window may look centered while leaving almost no margin; a smaller window makes the center easier to judge.
  4. Drag the title bar. Press and hold the title bar, move the window toward the middle of the display, and release when its left and right margins, and then its top and bottom margins, look equal within the usable desktop.
  5. Check the work area rather than the glass. The taskbar and any other reserved desktop area change the region in which ordinary windows can sit. On a display with a taskbar at the bottom, the correct visual center is usually slightly above the panel’s geometric midpoint.

Drag slowly for the final adjustment. Windows may show an outline while you move a window; use that outline to compare the margins. If the application immediately changes size or location, it may be enforcing its own minimum dimensions, fixed aspect ratio, or preferred startup position.

When the title bar is hard to use

Borderless games, full-screen video, kiosk software, and some custom-rendered applications do not expose a normal title bar. Exit full-screen mode or use the application’s own windowed setting first. If the program is a modal dialog, move the parent application instead when Windows does not allow the dialog to be dragged independently.

Use Snap for a structured layout

Snap is built in and is designed for edges, corners, and predefined layouts rather than an exact floating center. Microsoft describes it as a way to arrange open windows with the mouse, touch, or keyboard in its Snap Your Windows documentation.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Windows+Left Arrow: snap the active window to the left side.
  • Windows+Right Arrow: snap it to the right side.
  • Windows+Up Arrow: maximize the active window.
  • Windows+Down Arrow: remove the window from the screen or minimize it, depending on its current state.
  • Windows+Shift+Down Arrow: restore a snapped or maximized window so it can be resized and positioned freely.
  • Windows+Z: open Snap layouts on systems that support the Snap layouts interface.

Microsoft’s full list of documented combinations is available in Keyboard shortcuts in Windows. The list does not define a command that places the active window at the exact center.

Mouse and Snap Assist

  1. Press and hold the title bar of the active window.
  2. Drag it to the left or right edge to occupy that side, or to a corner to occupy the corresponding quarter.
  3. When Snap Assist appears, select another open window for the remaining space if you want a complete arrangement.

This is useful when center means a balanced work area, such as a document on one side and a browser or terminal on the other. It is not the right tool for a single dialog with equal empty space around it. After snapping, use Windows+Shift+Down Arrow and the manual method if you need a floating centered window instead.

Move and center a window on another monitor

Windows includes a direct keyboard method for moving the active window to an adjacent display:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Click the window you want to move.
  2. Press Windows+Shift+Right Arrow to send it to the monitor on the right, or Windows+Shift+Left Arrow to send it to the monitor on the left.
  3. On the destination monitor, restore the window if it arrives maximized or snapped by pressing Windows+Shift+Down Arrow.
  4. Resize it if necessary, then drag its title bar to the center of that monitor’s usable desktop.

The destination is determined by the monitor arrangement configured in Windows Display settings, not necessarily by which physical screen is closest to you. If the displays are arranged diagonally or at different heights, the left/right command still follows the logical layout.

Why the center can look different across displays

Each monitor can have a different resolution, scaling percentage, taskbar position, or usable work area. A window centered on one panel may therefore appear a few pixels higher, lower, or farther to one side on another. Center relative to the desktop area available to windows, not just the outer dimensions of the monitor. If a taskbar is set to auto-hide, it may also change the apparent balance when it appears.

Create a reusable centered zone with FancyZones

For repeated placement, Microsoft PowerToys includes FancyZones, which Microsoft Learn describes as a window manager for custom layouts. Its documentation is at FancyZones Window Manager for Windows – PowerToys, updated August 25, 2026.

Build the centered zone

  1. Install and open Microsoft PowerToys.
  2. Open FancyZones settings.
  3. Launch the layout editor with Windows+Shift+Back-tick. The back-tick key is the one usually shared with the tilde character; FancyZones lets you change this shortcut.
  4. Create either a Canvas layout, where you position and size a zone directly, or a Grid layout, where you divide the display into zones.
  5. Place one zone in the middle of the display and leave the surrounding area outside that zone. Make the zone as wide and tall as the windows you intend to center.
  6. Save and apply the layout.

To use it, drag a window into the centered zone. FancyZones places the window within that zone rather than relying on a manual estimate each time. If you prefer the keyboard, enable FancyZones’ documented keyboard override and use Windows+Arrow to move the active window between zones.

Options that affect repeatability

FancyZones can keep windows in their assigned zones when the display resolution changes. It can also move newly created windows to a zone previously used by that application when the corresponding options are enabled. These settings make a centered placement more consistent after docking a laptop, changing monitor modes, or reopening a program.

Applications running with elevated privileges can require PowerToys itself to run as administrator before FancyZones can manage them. This is a permission relationship, not a centering shortcut: only grant elevation when the affected application genuinely requires it, and use the same privilege level for PowerToys if needed.

Which method fits your situation?

Method Built into Windows Exact single-window center Repeatable Keyboard support Multi-monitor use Setup effort

Snap edges and layouts Yes No; targets sides, corners, and layouts High for standard arrangements Windows+Arrow and Windows+Z Yes, with the monitor move shortcut None
FancyZones centered zone No; included with PowerToys Yes, within the saved zone High Layout editor shortcut and optional keyboard override Yes; layouts can be assigned to displays Install PowerToys and create a layout

If you need an exact center once, manual dragging is faster than configuring anything. If you are arranging several windows, Snap avoids repeated resizing. If the same application must land in a particular middle area every day, a FancyZones layout repays its one-time setup.

Troubleshoot windows that will not center

The window is off-screen

Activate it from the taskbar or with Alt+Tab, then use Windows+Shift+Left Arrow or Windows+Shift+Right Arrow to move it to a visible adjacent monitor. Restore it with Windows+Shift+Down Arrow and finish with the title-bar method. This is usually safer than repeatedly dragging toward an unknown edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The window keeps snapping while you drag

Dragging close to an edge invokes Snap behavior. Start from the middle of the title bar, move toward the target center, and release before reaching an edge. If you accidentally snap it, press Windows+Shift+Down Arrow to restore it and continue positioning.

The center looks wrong after docking or changing scale

Recheck the destination monitor’s taskbar, display scaling, and usable work area. A layout that was visually centered before a resolution or scaling change may no longer have equal margins. Manually adjust the window, or update the corresponding FancyZones layout for that display.

The application moves itself back

Some applications remember their last position, enforce a minimum size, or use a launcher that places the main window. Center it after the application finishes opening. If the behavior repeats and the program is compatible with FancyZones, assign it to the saved centered zone; otherwise, look for a position or window-mode setting inside that application.

The shortcut does nothing

Make sure the target window is active and that the Windows key is not disabled by a keyboard utility, remote-desktop policy, or hardware gaming mode. Windows+Z is for Snap layouts, while Windows+Shift+Arrow is for moving between monitors; neither is an exact-center command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FancyZones does not control an elevated application

Run PowerToys with administrator privileges when the managed application is elevated. If that is not acceptable on a shared or managed computer, use Windows’ restore, monitor-move, and manual title-bar controls instead.

A quick decision checklist

  • One window, exact middle, no installation: restore, resize, and drag the title bar.
  • Two or more windows arranged around each other: use Snap with Windows+Arrow or Windows+Z.
  • Window on the wrong monitor: use Windows+Shift+Left Arrow or Windows+Shift+Right Arrow, then center it on arrival.
  • Same centered placement every day: create a centered Canvas or Grid zone in FancyZones.
  • Position changes after a display change: account for scaling, taskbar location, monitor arrangement, and the application’s own window restrictions.

What to remember

There is no universal Windows shortcut that centers any active window. Manual title-bar dragging remains the precise, broadly compatible solution. Snap is the built-in choice for edges, corners, and multi-window layouts, and FancyZones adds reusable custom zones when a repeatable centered position matters. On multiple monitors, move the window with Windows+Shift+Left or Right Arrow first, then center it relative to the destination monitor’s usable desktop.
