You do not need to replay every World of Warcraft expansion before Midnight. For the fastest, reliable preparation, complete Blizzard’s accelerated The War Within recap, use the Returning Player Catch Up Experience if your controls or gear are rusty, watch the official “Midnight Story So Far” trailer, and then begin in Quel’Thalas. That route covers the plot threads Midnight immediately continues: Xal’atath, the Dark Heart, Dimensius, the destruction of Dalaran, and the defense of the Sunwell.
The quickest route to understand Midnight
Blizzard has built a focused catch-up path for players who missed or forgot much of The War Within. Follow these steps in order:

- Play the accelerated War Within recap. Blizzard describes it as taking “just a few hours of playtime.” It starts on the Isle of Dorn, presents the major story beats and cinematics, and carries you through the journey to the broken world of K’aresh.
- Add the Returning Player Catch Up Experience if you need a gameplay refresher. Its guided sequence in the Arathi Highlands helps you relearn movement, combat, menus, gear and current quest flow before pointing you toward the next content.
- Watch the official “Midnight Story So Far” trailer. It is specifically intended to refresh Xal’atath’s actions in The War Within, including Dalaran’s destruction and Dimensius’s return.
- Begin Midnight in Quel’Thalas. The opening crisis is an assault by Xal’atath and the Devouring Host on the Sunwell, putting Silvermoon and the surrounding elven lands in immediate danger.
This sequence gives you narrative context first, practical orientation second and the expansion’s immediate hook last. A full replay from Classic through Dragonflight is optional rather than necessary for this specific goal.
Which catch-up option fits you?
| Option | Time | Story coverage | Gameplay refresher | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerated The War Within Recap | A few hours of playtime, according to Blizzard | Main The War Within plot and key cinematics, from the Isle of Dorn to K’aresh | Limited | Players who mainly need the story |
| Returning Player Catch Up Experience | Short guided quest sequence; Blizzard does not publish a fixed duration | Orientation plus selected story context | Strongest | Lapsed players who have forgotten controls, gear or menus |
| Full replay of older expansions | Longest option | Broadest and most immersive history | Depends on how much you play | Lore completionists, not players seeking only Midnight context |
The recap and returning-player sequence serve different purposes. The recap is the efficient story route; the guided experience is a practical reset for an account you have not used in a long time. You can do both, but you do not need to repeat every quest in both activities to understand the central conflict.

What happens in the accelerated War Within recap
It follows the story’s actual journey
The recap begins on the Isle of Dorn and moves through the principal locations and events of The War Within, eventually reaching K’aresh. Blizzard designed it to show the main characters, major cinematics and decisive plot turns without requiring you to clear every optional zone, dungeon or side activity.
Use it as a narrative spine. Pay attention to why the heroes leave one location for another, which characters are present during each crisis and how the Dark Heart changes from a mysterious artifact into a threat to entire worlds. Optional achievements and side stories can wait until after you start Midnight.
What the recap does not promise
The experience is accelerated, so it is not a replacement for every character arc or historical reference in the game. It gives you the sequence needed to follow the main plot. If you want the emotional background behind every faction or an exhaustive account of Azeroth’s earlier wars, you will need optional lore reading or older quests; neither is required to understand the opening of Midnight.
Use the Returning Player Catch Up Experience when the game itself feels unfamiliar
Story knowledge and operational knowledge are separate problems. If you remember little about modern World of Warcraft’s interface, talent choices, equipment or travel, start with the Returning Player Catch Up Experience or complete it alongside the story recap.

What the guided sequence teaches
- A guided sequence in the Arathi Highlands reintroduces movement, combat and the rhythm of accepting, completing and turning in quests.
- It helps you recognize current interface elements, gear handling and other everyday systems that changed while you were away.
- It provides appropriate gear for a returning character rather than assuming your old equipment is still suitable.
- It suggests the next content after the orientation, so you are not left wondering which campaign or zone to select.
Blizzard does not publish a fixed completion time for this sequence. Treat it as a short orientation rather than a second full campaign. If you are comfortable with modern controls and only want the plot, you can skip it and go straight to the accelerated recap.
The minimum War Within story you need to know
The Radiant Song leads the heroes beneath Azeroth
The War Within opens with the Radiant Song, a mysterious call connected to a crisis under Azeroth. Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore and Anduin Wrynn investigate as events pull the heroes toward Khaz Algar. Dalaran is moved over Khaz Algar, making the city a central staging point for the campaign.
That opening matters because it puts three major figures with very different histories in the same investigation. Thrall brings his long connection to Azeroth’s elemental and world-scale threats; Jaina is one of the Alliance’s most experienced leaders and mages; Anduin is trying to reclaim his purpose and confidence after the events of earlier expansions. You do not need every detail of their pasts, but you should recognize them as the principal heroes responding to the Radiant Song.

Khadgar’s disappearance is therefore not a minor character beat: it removes one of Azeroth’s most important magical advisers at the moment the heroes need him. The destruction of Dalaran also signals that Xal’atath can penetrate the institutions the heroes regard as secure. When the “Midnight Story So Far” trailer refers to her dark deeds, Dalaran’s fall is the event to remember first.
The campaign moves from Khaz Algar to K’aresh
The heroes’ route through Khaz Algar eventually extends to K’aresh. The accelerated recap uses that path so a returning player sees the campaign’s broad progression rather than a collection of disconnected quests. Khaz Algar is the immediate setting for the subterranean crisis; K’aresh expands the conflict into the history and plans of the ethereals.
The Dark Heart enables a world-ending plan
The Dark Heart is the artifact that links Xal’atath’s schemes to the larger Void threat. In the official account, the Shadowguard ethereals intend to use a repaired Dark Heart to restore the Void Lord Dimensius. Dimensius is not simply another battlefield opponent: his return could consume worlds.

This is the scale shift that prepares you for Midnight. The story is no longer only about defending one city or one subterranean region. Xal’atath’s actions, the ethereals’ plan and Dimensius’s possible restoration establish a threat that can reach across worlds and factions.

Alleria’s connection makes the Void personal
Alleria Windrunner’s conflict with the Void connects her directly to Xal’atath’s storyline. You do not need to memorize every vision or conversation, but remember that Alleria has spent years resisting the Void’s influence while trying to use its power against its own servants. That history makes Xal’atath more than a distant cosmic villain: she is tied to Alleria’s most dangerous inner and external conflict.
The people and places to recognize before you launch Midnight
| Name | Why it matters going into Midnight |
|---|---|
| Xal’atath | The Void Harbinger leading the assault on the Sunwell and the Devouring Host’s campaign. |
| Alleria Windrunner | An elven hero whose struggle with the Void is closely connected to Xal’atath. |
| Khadgar | The archmage captured when Xal’atath drains and destroys Dalaran. |
| Anduin Wrynn | One of the leaders who responds to the Radiant Song and the crisis beneath Azeroth. |
| Thrall | A veteran champion involved in investigating the Radiant Song and the Khaz Algar crisis. |
| Jaina Proudmoore | A principal magical and political leader in the response to the opening crisis. |
| Lor’themar Theron | The blood elf leader whose people defend Quel’Thalas and the Sunwell. |
| Lady Liadrin | A prominent blood elf leader involved in the defense of her homeland. |
| Turalyon | An Alliance commander connected to the forces answering the threat. |
| Sylvanas Windrunner | She returns from the Shadowlands during the invasion and stands with her sister and nephew. |
| Khaz Algar | The subterranean region where the The War Within crisis unfolds. |
| K’aresh | The broken world reached later in the campaign and tied to the ethereal and Dimensius storyline. |
| The Dark Heart | The artifact used to drain Dalaran and central to the plan to restore Dimensius. |
| Dimensius | The Void Lord whose return could consume worlds. |
| The Sunwell | The magical heart of Quel’Thalas and the first major target of the Midnight invasion. |
| Silvermoon City | The blood elf capital threatened when the Devouring Host attacks Quel’Thalas. |
| Eversong Woods | The surrounding elven territory placed under threat alongside Silvermoon. |
What Midnight’s opening assumes you already understand
The attack is on Quel’Thalas, not Khaz Algar
Midnight shifts the action to the elven homeland of Quel’Thalas. Xal’atath and the Devouring Host descend on the Sunwell, while Silvermoon City and Eversong Woods come under threat. The change of setting does not abandon the previous campaign; it brings its Void conflict to a new strategic target.
Several elven groups unite
Blood elves, void elves, night elves, high elves and nightborne join the defense. Their histories and loyalties are not identical, which is why their cooperation is significant. The invasion creates a shared emergency that brings these elven peoples together alongside the Alliance and the Light’s Vanguard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSylvanas’s return changes the balance
Sylvanas Windrunner emerges from the Shadowlands during the crisis to stand with her sister Alleria and her nephew. Her intervention forces Xal’atath to retreat temporarily. Remember this as a turning point, not a permanent victory: the retreat interrupts the assault but does not resolve the Void threat.

Optional context if you want more Quel’Thalas background
The Warning update adds “Visions of a Shadowed Sun,” which continues the lead-in to Midnight, along with an elf-focused lorewalking activity. These activities are useful if you want additional Quel’Thalas history, elven perspective and atmosphere before entering the new expansion.
They are enrichment rather than prerequisites. Complete them after the accelerated recap if you enjoy exploring lore, or skip them when your priority is reaching the opening campaign quickly.
What you can safely skip
- A complete replay of every older expansion. The accelerated recap exists specifically to condense the relevant The War Within plot.
- Every side quest in Khaz Algar. Side stories can add texture, but the main recap supplies the campaign’s essential sequence.
- Memorizing the entire history of the high elves, night elves, blood elves, void elves and nightborne. You only need to know that these groups unite to defend Quel’Thalas and that their relationships have long, sometimes painful histories.
- Grinding old gear before starting. If your account needs practical preparation, the returning-player sequence provides appropriate gear and next-content guidance.
Older content is worth revisiting for enjoyment, not as an entry requirement. A completionist can replay it later without delaying the current story.
A practical pre-Midnight checklist
- Log into the character you intend to use and determine whether your problem is missing story, rusty gameplay knowledge or both.
- Run the accelerated The War Within recap if plot is the main gap. Follow its route from the Isle of Dorn to K’aresh and watch the included cinematics.
- Run the Returning Player Catch Up Experience if you need to relearn combat, movement, equipment, menus or current quest flow.
- Watch Blizzard’s “Midnight Story So Far” trailer immediately before starting the new expansion. Use it to refresh Dalaran’s destruction, Xal’atath’s role and Dimensius’s return.
- Recognize the key names in the glossary above, especially Xal’atath, Alleria, Khadgar, the Dark Heart, Dimensius and the Sunwell.
- Start the Midnight campaign in Quel’Thalas and follow the opening defense of the Sunwell, Silvermoon and Eversong Woods.
Bottom line: the lore you actually need
The essential chain is short: the Radiant Song drew Thrall, Jaina and Anduin into a crisis beneath Azeroth; Xal’atath infiltrated Dalaran, used the Dark Heart, captured Khadgar and destroyed the city; the campaign moved through Khaz Algar to K’aresh; the Shadowguard ethereals sought to restore Dimensius, a Void Lord capable of consuming worlds; and Xal’atath then brought the Devouring Host against the Sunwell in Quel’Thalas. The accelerated recap plus the official trailer covers that chain, while the returning-player sequence handles the separate problem of relearning the game.
