Do you need to play the older GTA games before GTA 6?
No. Rockstar’s public description sets up a new story about Jason and Lucia, whose “easy score” draws them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The description does not identify an earlier game as required preparation. Choosing GTA V as the best short refresher is practical advice because it is the preceding numbered entry, not a requirement announced by Rockstar.

What to play for the clearest refresher: GTA V Story Mode
Start here if you want one game rather than a tour of the franchise. Rockstar’s description follows Franklin, Michael and Trevor as they become entangled with the criminal underworld, the U.S. government and the entertainment industry while attempting dangerous heists. That gives you a direct refresher on the last numbered GTA campaign without requiring a detour through every earlier setting.
Check the edition carefully before buying: Rockstar Store lists GTA V with Story Mode and GTA Online, but also offers Online as a separately available standalone product, with a Story Mode upgrade available in-game. Confirm that the platform edition you select includes Story Mode on the Rockstar Store GTA V page.

When the longer routes make sense
Play GTA IV and its Episodes for more HD-era stories
If you want a wider modern-era run, play GTA IV, then The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, before moving to GTA V. Rockstar says GTA IV: The Complete Edition contains GTA IV and both Episodes. The surfaced Rockstar Store listing is for PC; do not assume the same edition or format is available for every current console or market.

The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. It is a reasonable choice if you are curious about earlier GTA settings and eras, not because the cited Rockstar materials say these campaigns are necessary for GTA 6. The Rockstar Store page gives the bundle’s release date as November 11, 2021. Its PC listing specifies a Rockstar Games Launcher/social account and internet access for activation and periodic entitlement verification; those PC requirements should not be generalized to console editions.

Add GTA Online only if you want the extra story
GTA Online is not needed for a compact single-player recap. If you already play it or want more of Franklin’s story, Rockstar’s 2022 The Contract announcement described the update as bringing GTA V’s story into present-day Online. Because Online is an evolving service, its content is distinct from a fixed campaign route.
