How to Cast a Browser Video to a TV When the Cast Option Is Missing

If Chrome’s Cast button is missing, open More (⋮) > Save and Share > Cast. If no television appears in the picker, check that the TV or streaming device supports Google Cast, both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network, Chrome is current, and VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, or router isolation settings are not blocking local-device discovery.

Start with Chrome’s menu, not the missing toolbar icon

A missing icon does not mean browser casting is unavailable. On a Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS computer, open Chrome and select More (⋮) > Save and Share > Cast. Chrome opens a destination picker and lets you choose whether to send the current tab or, where supported, the whole screen.

Google Chrome Help describes the feature this way: “You can show a Chrome tab or your screen from your PC to your TV with your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer (4K) device.” The wording and placement of menu items can change between Chrome releases, so use the labels currently shown in your browser rather than following an old screenshot.

Restore the Cast button to the toolbar

When the command works but you want faster access, look in Chrome’s toolbar overflow area. A large number of extensions can push the Cast control out of sight. Open the overflow area, find the Cast control, and pin it to the toolbar if Chrome offers that option. If Chrome settings were recently reset, the button may have been removed from the visible toolbar even though the Cast command remains available in the menu.

Update Chrome before troubleshooting further. An outdated browser can have different menu labels or fail to communicate correctly with a current receiver. After updating, close and reopen Chrome, then try the menu path again.

Confirm that the TV can receive Google Cast

Chrome’s browser-casting instructions are for a compatible Google Cast receiver. Google lists Chromecast devices, Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra, Google TV Streamer (4K), and televisions with Google Cast built in. The receiver also needs a reliable Wi‑Fi connection.

A smart TV is not automatically a Google Cast receiver. It may support a different casting standard, a manufacturer-specific app, or only screen mirroring. If the television has no Google Cast support and no compatible receiver is connected to an HDMI input, Chrome cannot add that capability through software alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the receiver before buying anything

  1. Look in the TV’s specifications or settings for “Google Cast,” “Chromecast built-in,” or an equivalent Cast label.
  2. Identify any streaming device connected to the TV and check whether it is a Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K), or another Google Cast receiver.
  3. Confirm that the receiver is powered on, the TV is set to the correct HDMI input, and the receiver has completed its initial setup.
  4. Only if the TV lacks a compatible receiver should you consider adding one. Google TV Streamer (4K) is a named compatible option in Google’s Chrome support documentation; availability and price depend on your region and current retail catalog.

Do not assume a receiver is defective because it does not appear in Chrome. Discovery can fail even when the hardware is working, especially when the computer and receiver are separated by network settings.

Put the computer and receiver on the same local network

For wireless discovery, the computer running Chrome and the Google Cast receiver must be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network. “Same internet connection” is not sufficient if one device is on a guest network, a different access point with client isolation, or a wired segment that the router keeps separate from Wi‑Fi clients.

Use this network checklist

  • Compare the exact network name shown on the computer with the network name configured on the TV or receiver.
  • Disconnect the computer from a guest SSID and join the main home network temporarily.
  • If the computer is connected by Ethernet, verify that the router allows wired devices to communicate with the Wi‑Fi network where the receiver is connected.
  • Move the receiver closer to the wireless router if its signal is weak or intermittent.
  • Avoid testing through a phone hotspot unless the receiver and computer are both known to support that arrangement; many hotspots isolate clients or block discovery traffic.

Chrome cannot find a Google streaming device that is genuinely on another network. Correcting the network assignment is more useful than repeatedly reopening the Cast picker.

When no destination appears in the Cast picker

If the Cast window opens but lists no TV, use the following sequence. Each step eliminates a different cause, so test Chrome again after each change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Verify setup and power-cycle both ends

  1. Confirm the receiver’s setup is complete and that it displays a normal home screen rather than a setup prompt or error.
  2. Unplug the receiver’s power for about a minute, reconnect it, and wait until its home screen is fully loaded.
  3. Restart the computer running Chrome.
  4. Open Chrome, repeat More > Save and Share > Cast, and wait several seconds for the destination list to populate.

Rebooting is a diagnostic step, not a permanent fix for a blocked network. If the receiver repeatedly disappears, continue with the network and security checks below.

2. Test from a Cast-enabled app

Try casting from an app that explicitly supports Google Cast. If the receiver appears and plays content from that app, the TV, receiver, and basic network path are functioning. Focus the remaining troubleshooting on Chrome, the computer, or the particular website.

If no Cast-enabled app can find the receiver either, the problem is more likely receiver setup, Wi‑Fi assignment, router isolation, or a security rule affecting local traffic. Resolve that broader discovery problem before changing browser settings.

3. Check for VPN and proxy routing

VPNs and proxy services can send the computer’s traffic through a virtual interface or remote network, preventing it from discovering a receiver on the local LAN. Temporarily pause the VPN or remove the proxy setting only long enough to test Cast, then restore it if it is required for work or privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not leave a security tool disabled as a general solution. The useful test is whether the receiver appears when local-network traffic is allowed. If it does, configure the VPN or proxy to permit local-network access, following that product’s documentation.

4. Inspect firewall and antivirus rules

A desktop firewall or antivirus network shield can block the local discovery and connection traffic used by Google Cast. Look for rules affecting Chrome, local-network access, multicast or discovery services, and private/home networks. Approve Chrome on the trusted private network only when you understand the rule being changed.

Avoid turning off every firewall profile. Test one controlled change, retry the Cast picker, and then restore protection or create a narrow allow rule. On a managed work or school computer, an administrator may need to make this change.

5. Check router AP isolation

Many routers include a setting called AP isolation, client isolation, or wireless isolation. It prevents devices connected to the same Wi‑Fi access point from communicating with one another. That can stop Chrome from discovering a Cast receiver even when both devices show the same network name.

Open the router’s wireless or guest-network settings and check whether isolation is enabled for the SSID in use. Disable it only on a trusted home network if you understand the security implications; leave isolation enabled on a guest network and move both devices to the appropriate private network instead. Router interfaces differ, so follow the router maker’s instructions for the exact model.

Choose what you actually want to send

“Casting a video” can describe several different operations. Selecting the right one matters because the receiver, source device, and website may support one path but not another.

Method What appears on the TV Typical requirement Main limitation
Cast from a supported app The selected video is handed to the receiver for playback. A Cast-enabled app and a compatible Google Cast receiver. The app and video service must support casting; browser content outside the app is not sent.
Chrome tab casting The active browser tab, including its video and page content. Desktop Chrome and a compatible Google Cast receiver on the same network. Playback quality and synchronization can vary by website, computer performance, and Wi‑Fi conditions.
Chrome screen casting The computer’s display, rather than only one tab. Desktop Chrome, a compatible receiver, and permission for screen capture where requested. Menus, notifications, and other windows may be visible; protected content can restrict capture.
Device screen mirroring The complete screen of a phone, tablet, or computer, including controls and menus. A receiver and source device that support the same mirroring standard. Compatibility varies by operating system and model; it is not the same as app casting.
HDMI connection A wired copy of the computer’s video output. A matching output port on the computer, a suitable cable or adapter, and an available TV HDMI input. It requires a physical connection and the correct adapter; wireless discovery is avoided.

Cast a browser video from a desktop or laptop

Use the tab when the receiver is visible

  1. Start the video in Chrome and leave the desired tab active.
  2. Open More (⋮) > Save and Share > Cast.
  3. Select the compatible TV or receiver from the list.
  4. If Chrome offers a source choice, select the current tab for browser-only playback.
  5. Return to the video tab. Chrome shows a Cast indicator while the tab is being sent.

Keep the computer awake and connected to the same network while the session is active. Closing the tab, changing networks, or allowing the computer to sleep can end the cast.

Use screen casting only when tab casting is not suitable

Screen casting is useful when the video is not presented in a Cast-compatible player or when you need to show more than one browser tab. It also sends everything visible on the computer, including browser controls, notifications, and other windows. Select the screen option in Chrome’s Cast dialog when it is offered, then approve any operating-system capture permission.

Protected or rights-managed video may display a blank area, an error, or audio without picture when captured as a tab or screen. That is a restriction imposed by the website or playback technology, not proof that the receiver is missing.

Understand app casting versus Roku-style screen mirroring

Some televisions and streaming players support their own casting or mirroring methods. Roku’s support guidance distinguishes casting selected content in a supported app from mirroring the entire mobile-device display. Mirroring includes the source device’s buttons, menus, and notifications; app casting sends only the selected content when the app and player support it.

Roku states that most current-generation players and Roku TV models support screen mirroring, but support depends on the exact player, TV model, and source device. Do not promise that a particular phone or computer can mirror to a Roku device without checking those model-specific requirements. Google Chrome’s Cast menu is intended for Google Cast receivers, so a Roku player may not appear there simply because it supports another form of mirroring.

Use HDMI when wireless casting is unavailable

A wired connection is the most predictable fallback when the TV lacks a compatible receiver, the network is managed, or the website does not behave well with tab casting. Connect the computer’s video output to an available HDMI input on the TV, select that input, and play the video in Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check ports before purchasing an adapter

  • Identify the computer’s output: HDMI, mini-HDMI, DisplayPort, USB‑C with video output, or another port.
  • Check the TV’s available input and whether it is standard HDMI or a different connector.
  • For USB‑C, verify that the specific port supports video output; not every USB‑C port does.
  • Choose an adapter or cable that matches both ends and supports the resolution and refresh rate you need.
  • If the computer has no compatible video output, a generic USB data adapter may not provide video; check the computer manufacturer’s specifications first.

No particular cable or adapter model is required by Chrome. The correct choice depends on the computer’s ports, the TV input, and the display capabilities you need.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Symptom Most useful first check Next action
The toolbar icon is missing, but the receiver works from another app. Open Chrome’s More menu and look in the toolbar overflow. Use Save and Share > Cast, then pin the control if Chrome offers that option.
The Cast picker opens but is empty. Compare the computer and receiver’s exact Wi‑Fi network. Restart both devices, then inspect VPN, proxy, firewall, and AP-isolation settings.
The TV appears, but casting fails immediately. Check receiver power, Chrome updates, and Wi‑Fi signal strength. Try a Cast-enabled app to separate receiver problems from Chrome or website problems.
An app can cast, but a browser video cannot. Determine whether the site supports tab casting or blocks capture. Try Chrome tab casting, then screen casting if appropriate; use HDMI if the site restricts capture.
The receiver appears only when the VPN is paused. Confirm that the VPN is blocking local-network discovery. Enable the VPN’s local-network access option or use a trusted network without that restriction.
Mirroring works from one device but not another. Check the exact source-device and receiver model support. Use a supported app-casting path or a wired HDMI connection instead.

A practical decision path

  1. Open the command: use More > Save and Share > Cast, even if the toolbar icon is absent.
  2. Identify the receiver: confirm Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast Ultra, or Google Cast built into the TV.
  3. Match networks: place the computer and receiver on the same non-isolated Wi‑Fi network.
  4. Refresh the setup: update Chrome, reboot the receiver and computer, and retry.
  5. Separate the fault: test a Cast-enabled app. Success there points toward Chrome or the website; failure points toward setup or networking.
  6. Inspect blockers: check VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus network protection, and router AP or client isolation without leaving security broadly disabled.
  7. Change methods: use supported app casting, Chrome tab or screen casting, model-compatible mirroring, or HDMI according to what the receiver and source device support.

What to check before replacing hardware

Replacing a streaming device should be the last step, not the first. A missing toolbar icon is normally a Chrome interface or pinning issue. An empty destination list is often caused by network separation, VPN routing, firewall rules, or receiver setup. Test those conditions before spending money.

If the TV genuinely lacks Google Cast, adding a compatible receiver is a reasonable hardware solution. If the TV already has a supported receiver but wireless discovery is unreliable on a managed or isolated network, HDMI may be simpler and more dependable. The right choice depends on whether you value a cable-free setup, whole-screen display, app-controlled playback, or predictable wired output.
