Wash a waterproof jacket when it is dirty, smells, or starts wetting out. Use the jacket’s care label first, then a small amount of liquid detergent made for technical outerwear. Dry or apply heat only when the label permits it. Once the clean, dry shell is tested, add a compatible DWR treatment only if water still fails to bead.
DWR and the waterproof membrane do different jobs. DWR helps water bead on the face fabric; the membrane or waterproof construction provides the barrier against liquid water. A jacket can therefore look saturated on the outside and still be waterproof, although wetting out can reduce comfort and perceived breathability.

What DWR does—and what it cannot do
Durable water repellent (DWR) is a finish on the outer textile. It makes droplets gather and roll away instead of spreading through the face fabric. That keeps the shell lighter and helps the garment feel more breathable during rain.
The waterproof membrane, laminated film, coating, and seam construction underneath are separate from DWR. If the face fabric wets out, the membrane has not automatically failed. GORE-TEX explains that a product can remain waterproof when water repellency is reduced, while the wearer loses the comfort normally expected from the garment. Read the manufacturer’s explanation in the GORE-TEX FAQs.

How to recognize wetting out
When rain no longer beads, the exterior darkens and appears soaked. Moisture may spread across large areas rather than forming discrete drops. This is a surface-repellency problem when the inside of the jacket remains dry and there is no visible damage.
When wetness may indicate a different problem
Water appearing on the inside, a leak concentrated at a torn area, lifting seam tape, delamination, or a puncture cannot be diagnosed from wetting-out behavior alone. Home washing and reproofing address cleaning and surface repellency; they do not establish a repair for a damaged membrane or seam. Use the jacket maker’s repair instructions or a qualified repair service. Patagonia’s repair information is available at Product Care, Repair, and Washing Instructions.
Before putting the jacket in a washer
Read the exact care label
Start with the sewn-in label and the model-specific instructions published by the maker. General advice differs between constructions. GORE-TEX gives a general warm-water setting, but individual garments can have exceptions, including the SHAKEDRY construction described below. The label controls whether machine washing, tumble drying, ironing, or a particular detergent is allowed.

- Brush or wipe off loose mud and grit before washing.
- Check the shell, lining, zippers, fasteners, and seam areas for visible damage.
- Close zippers and fasteners when the garment’s instructions call for it.
- Remove anything the label says should not go through the wash.
Cleaning is more than cosmetic. Dirt, body oils, sunscreen, smoke, and other contaminants can interfere with water repellency. Removing them is the first attempt at restoring performance.
Step-by-step: wash a waterproof jacket
1. Choose a suitable liquid cleaner
Use a small amount of liquid detergent intended for technical outerwear, following the garment and detergent directions. GORE-TEX specifically advises against powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach in its Outerwear Care Instructions. Patagonia recommends a mild, water-based liquid detergent for waterproof jackets that has no dyes, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance; treat that as its manufacturer guidance rather than proof that every ordinary detergent damages every shell.
A technical wash is a cleaner, not automatically a reproofing product. For example, Nikwax describes Tech Wash for waterproof, windproof, and fleece clothing and gear. Use it only where the jacket and product directions are compatible.
2. Set the wash according to the label
GORE-TEX’s general instruction specifies warm water at 105°F/40°C. That is a manufacturer care setting, not a universal rule for every waterproof jacket. Select the temperature, cycle, and load instructions printed on your garment. Do not substitute a hotter cycle in an attempt to revive DWR.

Follow the label’s rinsing directions and take the jacket out when the cycle ends. The goal is to leave as little cleaner residue as the instructions permit before drying. If your garment’s instructions conflict with general technical-wear advice, follow the garment maker.

Drying and heat: the reactivation step
Washing, drying, and reheating can help restore DWR on garments designed for those methods. GORE-TEX includes tumble drying or ironing in its general care guidance, but those methods are not safe to apply automatically. Use only the heat level and method shown on your jacket’s label. If the label prohibits a dryer or iron, do not use heat as an experiment.
Allow the jacket to become fully dry before judging the result. A damp shell can make a water-bead test misleading. Heat is a possible reactivation step, not a substitute for cleaning or a license to exceed the label’s temperature.
Test the clean, dry jacket before reproofing
Perform a simple bead test
- Lay or hang the completely dry jacket.
- Place a small amount of clean water on the exterior fabric.
- Watch whether the water forms rounded droplets and rolls away or spreads and darkens the textile.
If water beads again after washing and permitted drying, the cited manufacturer guidance does not call for an additional DWR treatment. Stop at this stage; adding another product is unnecessary for the problem you just solved.

Patagonia states, “If water still doesn’t bead up on your shell after a wash and dry, then it’s time to re-proof it,” in How to Wash Your Waterproof Jacket (published August 20, 2026).
How to restore DWR when cleaning is not enough
Choose a treatment labeled for your jacket’s fabric and construction. Spray-on and wash-in products both exist, but the application method and compatibility instructions differ. Read the product directions before opening the bottle; they determine how much product to use, whether the garment must be wet or dry, and which areas need coverage.
| Option | Where treatment is applied | What the cited guidance says | Practical requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spray-on DWR | Directly onto the outer fabric | Can be equally effective when every area is covered | Apply thoroughly and evenly; missed panels remain less water-repellent |
| Wash-in DWR | Distributed through the wash | Can be easier because the entire item is treated in one wash | Confirm that both the garment and treatment permit wash-in application |
Those comparisons come from Patagonia’s care guidance. They do not establish that one format is universally more breathable, longer-lasting, safer for the environment, or better for every jacket.
Applying a spray-on treatment
- Wash and dry the jacket first, using the label-approved process.
- Check the DWR product label for the required garment condition and application distance.
- Hang or lay the jacket as directed and spray the outside fabric so all panels receive coverage, including high-wear areas.
- Allow the treatment to dry or cure exactly as the product directions specify, without adding unapproved heat.
- Repeat the bead test only after the treatment has dried completely.
Spray-on products put the treatment where it is needed—the exterior—but that advantage depends on complete coverage. Pay attention to shoulders, hood, cuffs, and areas under pack straps without assuming that a second coat is allowed.

Applying a wash-in treatment
- Confirm that the garment label allows a wash-in reproofer and that the product is compatible with the shell.
- Use the product’s stated amount and wash setting; do not improvise a stronger mixture.
- Run the treatment on the entire item as directed so the finish is distributed across all fabric.
- Dry the jacket using only the garment’s permitted method.
- Check beading after the jacket is dry.
A wash-in treatment can be convenient because it reaches the whole item in one cycle, but it is not automatically appropriate for every membrane, lining, or insulated garment. Compatibility takes priority over convenience.

Cleaning products and reproofers: keep their jobs separate
Nikwax separates its garment-care products into cleaning and reproofing categories. Tech Wash is described as a cleaner for removing contaminants from technical clothing. TX.Direct is identified for re-waterproofing when cleaning does not revive water beading. These are examples of product categories, not mandatory brands or proof that a particular treatment works with every jacket.
Do not apply a reproofer simply because a jacket has been washed. First complete the clean-and-dry test. The treatment is justified when the outer fabric still fails to bead and the product instructions match the garment.
Important exception: GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY
GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY garments have no textile outer layer, so the brand says they do not need DWR. Its special-care instructions call for a delicate machine wash at 105°F/40°C and prohibit dry cleaning, tumble drying, ironing, bleaching, and DWR treatment. This is a construction-specific exception. Check whether your garment is actually labeled SHAKEDRY before applying any general waterproof-jacket advice.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The jacket wets out, but the inside stays dry
This pattern is consistent with exhausted surface repellency rather than proven membrane failure. Wash away contaminants, dry as allowed, and repeat the bead test. If droplets still spread, use a compatible spray-on or wash-in DWR treatment.
The jacket still looks wet after a permitted drying cycle
Do not assume that more heat will solve it. Confirm that the shell is fully dry, then test beading. If the face fabric still absorbs water, move to a compatible reproofer instead of increasing temperature beyond the label.
Water appears on the inside
Interior moisture can come from several causes, including leakage, condensation, or damage; the reviewed care instructions do not support diagnosing which one remotely. Inspect for punctures, failed seam tape, or delamination and contact the maker or a qualified repair service rather than repeatedly applying DWR.
There is visible damage or peeling seam tape
DWR cannot repair a hole, failed seam, or delaminated laminate. Stop treating the jacket as a simple care problem and follow the manufacturer’s repair route. Patagonia’s repair page at patagonia.com/repairs/ is one example of a maker’s repair-information page.
The jacket smells or has greasy marks
Odor and contamination are prompts to wash, not automatic prompts to reproof. Use the label-approved liquid technical detergent and avoid the prohibited additives listed by GORE-TEX. Reassess beading only after the shell is clean and dry.

How often should you wash or reproof?
The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal number of washes, seasons, or months for either washing or reproofing. Use condition-based prompts instead:
- Wash when dirt, body oils, sunscreen, smoke, odor, or other contaminants are present.
- Wash when the shell begins wetting out and may be carrying residue.
- Reproof only after a clean, dry jacket still fails the bead test.
- Recheck the care label whenever you change products or methods.
GORE-TEX says to wash as often as needed to remove impurities. That direction is more reliable than promising a fixed interval that ignores use, contamination, and the garment’s construction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions that prevent common mistakes
Can I skip washing and apply DWR immediately?
No. Contaminants can interfere with repellency, so cleaning is the first corrective step. A reproofer applied over dirt, body oils, sunscreen, or smoke is not a substitute for washing. Clean with the approved liquid product, dry fully, and test the face fabric before deciding that a new finish is needed.
Is 105°F/40°C the right temperature for every shell?
No. It is GORE-TEX’s general care setting. Your sewn-in label and model instructions take priority, and special constructions can prohibit methods that are allowed in general guidance. Never raise the temperature to force DWR back into the fabric.
Can I iron a waterproof jacket?
Only if the garment’s care instructions expressly permit ironing and specify the method. GORE-TEX mentions ironing in general guidance but also lists exceptions. If ironing is prohibited or not addressed, do not use it as an experiment; rely on the approved wash and drying process.
Should I reproof after every wash?
No fixed schedule is supported. Wash when the jacket is dirty, smells, or carries contaminants, then perform the bead test once it is dry. If droplets roll off again, stop. Reproof only when a clean, dry shell still absorbs water and the treatment is compatible.
Does a soaked-looking exterior prove the membrane is ruined?
No. Wetting out describes loss of surface repellency. GORE-TEX says the garment can remain waterproof while comfort declines. Look for interior leakage, punctures, failed seam tape, or delamination before treating the issue as structural damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich is better, spray-on or wash-in?
Neither is universally better. Patagonia says wash-in can be easier because it treats the entire item, while spray-on can be equally effective when every area is covered. Use the method allowed by both the garment and product labels, and do not infer unsupported differences in breathability, durability, or environmental impact.

Can a DWR treatment fix a leak?
No. DWR treats the outer face fabric. It does not repair a puncture, damaged membrane, peeling laminate, or failed seam tape. For those problems, use the maker’s repair instructions or a qualified repair service.
A decision checklist for the next rainy day
- Identify the construction. Read the care label and check for exceptions such as SHAKEDRY.
- Inspect the shell. Remove loose dirt and look for tears, punctures, seam-tape problems, or delamination.
- Clean first. Use the approved liquid technical detergent; avoid powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach where GORE-TEX’s guidance applies.
- Use only permitted heat. The general GORE-TEX setting is 105°F/40°C, but the individual label controls.
- Test when dry. Beading means no extra DWR step is indicated by the cited guidance.
- Reproof if needed. Select a compatible spray-on or wash-in treatment and follow its coverage and drying instructions.
- Escalate damage. Interior leakage or visible structural failure calls for maker guidance or professional repair, not more surface treatment.
The practical bottom line
Most waterproof-jacket care decisions are solved in sequence: label check, gentle technical wash, permitted drying, bead test, and only then compatible reproofing. Wetting out describes the face fabric’s loss of repellency; it does not by itself prove that the waterproof membrane has failed. Treat construction-specific exceptions and visible damage separately, because no home DWR treatment can replace a repaired membrane or seam.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether my waterproof jacket needs DWR?
Wash and dry it according to the label, then place clean water on the exterior. If droplets bead and roll away, no additional DWR step is indicated. If the clean, dry face fabric spreads water and darkens, use a compatible spray-on or wash-in treatment according to its directions.
Recommended Free Tools
Does wetting out mean my jacket is no longer waterproof?
Not necessarily. DWR affects the outer textile, while the membrane or waterproof construction forms the barrier. A jacket may remain waterproof when the face fabric wets out, although comfort and perceived breathability can decline.
What detergent should I use?
Use a small amount of liquid detergent approved for technical outerwear and follow the garment label. GORE-TEX advises avoiding powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach. Patagonia describes a mild water-based liquid without dyes, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance.
Can I use Nikwax Tech Wash and TX.Direct together?
They perform different jobs. Tech Wash is a cleaner; TX.Direct is a reproofing treatment used when cleaning does not restore beading. Use either product only when its instructions are compatible with your jacket, and test the clean, dry shell before reproofing.
How should GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY be cared for?
SHAKEDRY has no textile outer layer and does not need DWR. GORE-TEX lists delicate machine washing at 105°F/40°C and prohibits dry cleaning, tumble drying, ironing, bleaching, and DWR treatment. Confirm that the garment is actually SHAKEDRY before applying this exception.
How often should I wash or reproof a waterproof jacket?
There is no universal interval in the cited manufacturer guidance. Wash when dirt, odor, body oils, sunscreen, smoke, or other contaminants are present, and reproof only when a clean, dry jacket still fails the bead test.
The Bottom Line
Follow the label, clean before treating, dry only by an approved method, and use the bead test to decide whether DWR is necessary. Surface wetting is not proof of membrane failure; leaks, punctures, delamination, and failed seam tape require maker guidance or repair.
