How to Care for Suede and Faux-Suede Shoes

Start by checking the shoe’s label or care page: genuine suede is leather, while faux suede is synthetic and can be made in different ways. For either material, begin gently, avoid soaking the shoe, and let it dry naturally away from direct heat. Use a product only when its label and the shoe maker’s instructions say it suits that exact material and finish.

Identify the material before cleaning

Genuine suede is leather with a soft, napped surface. It may be made from split leather or the reverse side of leather, sanded to create a velvety finish, as Vagabond’s suede-care guidance explains. The nap is the raised surface that gives suede its characteristic texture; brushing can help restore it after cleaning.

Faux suede is synthetic, not one uniform material. For example, Miista describes its faux suede as woven synthetic fabric. Other shoes sold as faux suede may use a different construction or finish, so one maker’s method should not automatically be applied to another shoe.

Look first for a material or care label, then check the shoe maker’s care page if the label is missing or unclear. If the material or finish is uncertain, do not experiment with water, cleaner, an eraser, or protector spray. A delicate, metallic, or otherwise unusual finish is a reason to ask the maker or a professional suede cleaner before proceeding.

Care question Genuine suede Faux suede
What is it? Leather with a napped, sanded surface Synthetic material; construction varies
Gentle first step Brush surface dirt with a suede-specific brush Follow the maker’s instructions; a soft microfiber cloth is one maker-recommended starting point
Localized marks Use a cleaning block or suede cleaner only as the maker directs A clean eraser is suggested by some makers; use it gently and only if permitted
Water and drying Avoid soaking; air dry away from direct heat Avoid wetting or soaking; if wet, air dry away from direct sunlight and heat when the maker recommends that approach
Protector spray Use only a product labeled for compatible suede and follow its directions Do not assume a genuine-suede spray is suitable; check the shoe and product labels

These are starting points, not a substitute for the care instructions for a particular shoe. The difference matters most when choosing a cleaner or spray: a product suitable for leather suede may not be suitable for synthetic microsuede.

Choose an approach based on the mark

Before cleaning, consider what you are treating and how much of the shoe is affected. A little dry surface dirt calls for a different response than a persistent or extensive stain. For either material, start with the least intensive step the maker permits, and do not move to a wetter or more abrasive method just because the first pass did not remove a mark.

Situation Safer next step What to avoid
Loose, dry dirt on genuine suede Gently use a suede-specific brush Hard scrubbing or a metal brush unless the maker specifically approves it
Persistent mark on genuine suede Use a cleaning block or suede cleaner as directed by the shoe maker Applying a household cleaner or wetting the whole shoe
Dust on faux suede Use a soft cloth or gentle brushing if the maker recommends it Assuming all faux suede can be cleaned the same way
Small localized mark on faux suede Try a clean eraser gently only if the shoe maker permits it Rubbing hard or treating an extensive stain as a spot-cleaning job
Extensive stain or delicate finish Ask the maker or a professional suede cleaner Escalating pressure, moisture, or products without guidance

This is not a ranking of products: the right choice depends on material compatibility, the type and extent of the mark, and whether the directions allow use on the shoe’s finish. A product that works for one material can still cause color transfer or a texture change on another.

How to clean genuine suede shoes

1. Let loose dirt dry

If the shoe is muddy or damp, do not start scrubbing. Let loose dirt dry, then remove surface soil with a gentle pass of a suede-specific brush. Brushing dry dirt away first reduces the chance of grinding it into the nap. Use a light touch rather than aggressive back-and-forth scrubbing.

Brushes differ. Some makers caution against metal suede brushes; Stuart Weitzman’s shoe-care guide specifically warns against metal brushes for its shoes. If the shoe maker recommends a brush, follow its guidance on the type and technique. When that guidance is not available, choose a soft suede brush and avoid force.

2. Treat a persistent mark selectively

For a mark that remains after brushing, use a suede cleaning block or cleaner only if the shoe maker allows it. Vagabond’s routine describes brushing away surface dirt, using a cleaning block for tougher marks, and applying cleaner with a damp cloth. That sequence is a maker’s recommendation, not a universal recipe for every suede shoe.

Keep treatment local rather than wetting the whole shoe. Follow the cleaner’s directions, including any instructions about how much moisture to use. Products and finishes differ, and excess moisture can affect suede’s texture or color. Do not substitute a household cleaner simply because it is available.

3. Let the shoe dry, then restore the nap

After any permitted damp cleaning, allow the shoe to dry naturally. Keep it away from direct heat, which can affect the material. When it is dry, brush gently in the natural grain to raise and even the nap. Vagabond recommends brushing with the grain once the shoe is dry; Dr. Martens’ care guide also describes gentle cleaning, air drying, and brushing with the soft rubber side of a brush.

The practical rule is to be gentle at every stage. Dr. Martens footwear designer Charlie O’Byrne puts it this way: “Be gentle with it. Don’t attack it. Brush it like your favourite pet.” The advice is especially useful when a mark tempts you to scrub harder: more pressure is not a reliable shortcut to a cleaner finish.

How to clean faux-suede shoes

1. Check the shoe maker’s method

Because faux suede can have different synthetic constructions, begin with the shoe’s care label or the maker’s product-care page. Do not assume that guidance for woven synthetic fabric applies to every shoe described as faux suede.

2. Start with a soft cloth or gentle brushing

For its woven synthetic faux suede, Miista recommends using a soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and brushing gently in the natural grain direction. These steps offer a cautious model when they match the shoe’s own instructions, but they are not a blanket cleaning protocol for all faux suede.

Use a clean cloth and light pressure. If the maker recommends brushing, follow the grain direction rather than scrubbing rapidly in several directions. A gentle approach helps avoid roughing up or changing the appearance of the synthetic surface.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Use an eraser only for an allowed, localized mark

Some makers recommend a clean eraser for isolated marks. Charles & Keith’s product-care guidance suggests a clean, unused soft pencil eraser, used gently, followed by a soft-bristle brush to restore the nap. Miista also mentions a suede eraser for more aggressive staining. Check the shoe’s own instructions first, and stop if the surface begins to change.

An eraser is for a small, specific mark, not a way to clean the entire shoe. The more aggressively it is rubbed, the greater the chance of affecting the finish. If a stain is extensive or the material is delicate, consult the maker or a professional cleaner instead of escalating the pressure.

What to do if suede shoes get wet

Avoid soaking suede shoes. If they get wet, follow the shoe maker’s instructions, blot excess moisture, and let them dry naturally away from direct heat. Avoid placing them near a heater or using a tumble dryer to speed up drying. Heat and excess water can affect the texture or color.

For suede footwear, PUMA advises against machine washing, tumble drying, and submerging shoes because those methods can affect suede texture and color. Its guidance recommends a suede-specific brush for cleaning and a suede treatment spray before first wear. These are PUMA’s care recommendations; check the instructions for your own shoe before applying them.

For faux suede, avoiding water is also a cautious choice, but the precise care advice depends on its construction. Charles & Keith advises avoiding wetting faux suede and, if it gets wet, air drying it away from direct sunlight and heat. Miista warns that machine washing, tumble drying, or soaking its synthetic material may cause fibers to warp, bubble, or stiffen. Those consequences are specific to the maker’s guidance and should not be generalized to every synthetic shoe.

Should you apply a suede protector?

Only apply a protector when the product label matches the shoe’s material and finish. “Suede protector” does not mean a spray works on every suede-like fabric. For example, 3M’s instructions for Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector cover genuine suede and nubuck, and the product page says not to use that spray on microsuede, which 3M identifies as a fabric. The instructions point microsuede users toward a fabric product and a spot test instead.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For genuine suede or nubuck, 3M’s product instructions call for testing colorfastness on a hidden area, applying two light coats rather than one heavy coat, and reapplying after cleaning, when water and stain repellency fades, or about every six months—whichever comes first. Those instructions apply to that product; they are not a universal schedule for other sprays. Read the complete label and follow its directions for ventilation, application, drying, and compatible materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a successful hidden-area test as proof that a product is right for an incompatible material. First confirm that the spray is labeled for the shoe’s exact material and finish; then perform the test if the label directs you to. If the shoe maker says not to use a spray, follow the maker’s instruction.

Tools that can help—and when to use them

  • Soft suede brush: Useful for removing surface dirt and restoring the nap of genuine suede. Use gently, and check whether the shoe maker permits the brush type; some makers warn against metal brushes.
  • Suede eraser or cleaning block: For a localized mark when the maker allows it. Faux-suede makers in the cited guidance recommend a clean eraser for certain marks; use light pressure.
  • Suede cleaner: Use only when the shoe maker recommends it, and follow its application directions. A cleaner suitable for one leather or finish may not suit another.
  • Protector spray: Use only when its label matches the shoe’s material and finish. A suede-and-nubuck spray may exclude microsuede.
  • Professional cleaning: Consider a professional suede cleaner for extensive stains, delicate finishes, or shoes whose material or safe treatment is uncertain. Stuart Weitzman recommends professional suede cleaning for more extensive cleaning.

A kit is only as suitable as its individual contents. Before using a brush, eraser, cleaner, or spray from a shoe-care kit, check each product’s intended materials and instructions rather than assuming the entire kit is appropriate for every suede or faux-suede shoe.

If you are assembling a small care kit, the basic tool with direct support is a soft suede brush; a cleaning block or eraser can be useful for permitted localized marks, while cleaner and protector are optional and depend on compatibility. Check the actual contents of any kit and the intended materials of each product. A bundled “suede care” label does not establish that every item is suitable for faux suede, microsuede, metallic finishes, or a particular brand’s shoe.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Cleaning before identifying the material: Genuine suede and synthetic faux suede are not interchangeable, and faux-suede construction varies.
  • Soaking or machine washing: Shoe makers caution that water, washing, or submersion can alter texture, color, or synthetic fibers.
  • Using heat to hurry drying: Let shoes dry naturally away from direct heat; faux-suede care may also call for avoiding direct sunlight.
  • Scrubbing or erasing hard: Use light, controlled pressure and stop if the nap or finish changes.
  • Using a metal brush without checking: Some makers caution against it for their shoes.
  • Applying a spray based only on its name: Confirm compatibility with the exact material and finish, and follow label directions.

When home care is not the right next step

Stop and seek maker or professional guidance when the material cannot be identified, the finish is delicate or metallic, a stain covers a large area, or a gentle permitted treatment fails. More intensive cleaning is not automatically safer or more effective. A professional suede cleaner can assess whether a treatment is appropriate for the shoe’s material and finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suede is also vulnerable to environmental exposure. Stuart Weitzman advises avoiding extreme weather, humidity, and heat for its suede products. Treat that as a useful reminder to protect suede footwear from harsh conditions, while relying on the particular maker for shoe-specific care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean suede shoes at home?

Let loose dirt dry, then brush gently with a suede-specific brush. For a persistent mark, use a cleaning block or cleaner only as the shoe maker directs. Let the shoe dry naturally away from direct heat, then brush with the grain to raise the nap.

Can suede shoes get wet?

Avoid soaking them. If they get wet, follow the maker’s instructions, blot excess moisture, and let them air dry away from direct heat. PUMA warns that submerging, machine washing, or tumble drying can affect suede texture and color.

How should I clean faux-suede shoes?

Check the shoe’s care label or maker’s page first because faux suede varies by construction. Depending on the maker’s method, a soft microfiber cloth, gentle brushing in the grain direction, or a clean eraser for a localized mark may be appropriate. Avoid soaking or machine washing unless the shoe maker explicitly says otherwise.

Can I use suede protector on faux suede or microsuede?

Do not assume it is suitable. 3M says its Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector is not for microsuede, which it identifies as a fabric. Check the shoe and product labels for the exact material and finish, and perform any directed colorfastness or spot test.

How often should I reapply suede protector?

There is no universal schedule. For Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector, 3M says to reapply after cleaning, when water and stain repellency fades, or about every six months, whichever comes first. Follow the directions for the specific product you use.

When should I take suede shoes to a professional?

Consider a professional suede cleaner for extensive stains, delicate or metallic finishes, uncertain materials, or a mark that remains after a gentle treatment permitted by the maker. Stuart Weitzman specifically recommends professional cleaning for more extensive suede cleaning.

The Bottom Line

Identify the shoe’s material first, use only gentle maker-approved methods, and let it dry naturally. Faux suede varies, and a suede protector is not automatically safe for synthetic microsuede.
