To get more useful life from a cordless power-tool battery, follow the manual for the exact battery and charger, store the pack dry and away from temperature extremes, and charge it only within the maker’s permitted temperature range. Storage-charge recommendations differ—even between guidance pages from the same manufacturer—so there is no single percentage or temperature that applies to every tool battery.
Start with the manual for your battery and charger
Battery platforms have product-specific storage and charging limits. Check the tool or battery manual before storing a pack for a long period, choosing a charger, or replacing either item. Use the exact model information to confirm the battery and charger are approved for your tool; a battery that fits physically is not, by itself, proof of compatibility.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStore batteries dry, cool, and at the maker’s recommended charge
Choose a dry place and avoid temperature extremes. Keep the battery away from liquids and oils, as DEWALT advises in its battery storage and safety guidance. Check your own manual for the permitted storage temperature and charge level.

For storage charge, follow the guidance for your specific brand and product. STIHL’s recommendations illustrate why you should not assume one target fits every battery:
| Guidance | Storage charge | Temperature and other notes |
|---|---|---|
| STIHL UK, 2023 | 40–60%, indicated by two green LEDs on the batteries covered by the guidance | Store dry; consult the tool manual for the exact temperature limit. STIHL UK storage guidance |
| STIHL Support, 2024 | Not stated in this article | States a storage range of -10°C to +50°C for modern STIHL lithium-ion batteries, while describing frost-free, dry storage as ideal and directing users to the product manual for exact limits. STIHL Support storage guidance |
| STIHL USA, undated page reviewed in 2026 | 40–80% | Recommends 50–68°F for maximum battery life and using spare batteries in rotation. This is guidance on that STIHL USA page, not a universal target. STIHL USA storage guidance |
These are separate recommendations from different STIHL pages and regions; do not combine their figures into a single rule. For your battery, the model-specific manual takes precedence.

- Product will either come in original packaging that is in less than perfect shape and has been opened to inspect contents or will come in non-retail packaging (brown/white box or white/clear bag). Charges pack up to 40% faster, reducing downtime and maximizing productivity.
- The charger accepts all M18 and M12 batteries, providing an upgrade for both systems.
- The charger indicates when the battery reaches an 80% charge.
- Single unit simplicity for quick charge of all M12 and M18 battery packs.
- Sequential charging: automatically charges the second inserted pack once the first pack is fully charged.
Charge within the permitted temperature range
Use the manufacturer’s charging limits for the exact battery. STIHL’s charging guidance, dated 18 January 2026, gives 5–40°C for the STIHL lithium-ion batteries it covers. It says a charger may wait for a hot battery to cool before charging and warns not to heat a battery to make it charge. Check your product’s permitted range rather than applying STIHL’s figures to another brand. STIHL charging guidance
You do not need to wait for a lithium-ion battery to run completely flat before charging it. STIHL says its lithium-ion batteries do not have the nickel-cadmium “memory effect,” so partial charging is not harmful in the way that older belief suggested. This point is specific to lithium-ion guidance; do not assume it applies to other battery chemistries. STIHL charging guidance

- State of Charge Indicator: Two-stage LED state of charge indicator
- Compatability: DEWALT 12V MAX*, DEWALT 20V MAX*, and FLEXVOLT batteries
- Portability: DCB1104 4A charger is 15% smaller than DCB115 4A Charger.
- Mounting Capability: Two screw wall mount (screws sold separately)
STIHL states that a STIHL lithium-ion battery loses 1–3% of capacity per year through self-discharge. That manufacturer figure describes self-discharge, not total battery lifespan or cycle life, and should not be treated as a general rate for other brands. STIHL charging guidance
Clean the battery as its maker directs
For DEWALT batteries, the manufacturer advises cleaning with a clean, slightly damp cloth and not using solvents. Its guidance also says to avoid liquids and oils. Follow your own battery’s instructions if they differ; do not assume a cleaning method approved for one brand applies to another. DEWALT battery safety guidance

Check compatibility before replacing a battery or charger
Confirm the exact battery and charger models against the tool’s documentation before buying or using a replacement. DEWALT recommends authentic DEWALT batteries with DEWALT tools and chargers. For any platform, verify compatibility with the manufacturer’s information for your specific model rather than relying only on appearance or a broad platform name. DEWALT battery safety guidance
