Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses, keep lenses and their case away from water and saliva, and follow the lens and solution labels. If you develop pain, unusual redness, discharge, light sensitivity or blurred vision, remove the lenses and contact your eye-care professional promptly.
Why ortho-k lens care needs to be specific
Ortho-k lenses are rigid gas-permeable (GP or RGP) lenses worn during sleep to temporarily reshape the cornea. Their care requirements depend on the lens and the products prescribed for it. Your eye-care professional’s directions and the labels for your exact lens and care products take precedence over any general routine.

Do not assume that instructions for soft lenses apply to GP lenses. The CDC describes GP systems that may use separate wetting, cleaning and disinfecting products, or a multipurpose product; the right sequence depends on the prescribed system. Paragon likewise advises wearers of its CRT lenses to use the care system recommended by their eye-care professional. Before handling lenses
- Wash your hands thoroughly, then dry them with a clean, lint-free towel before touching lenses.
- Use only the application method prescribed for your lenses. Paragon’s CRT instructions, for example, describe filling the lens bowl with doctor-recommended artificial tears before application; that direction should not be assumed to apply to other brands.
- Inspect each lens for chips, cracks or other damage. Do not insert a damaged lens; ask your eye-care professional what to do next.
Paragon’s CRT application and removal instructions provide model-specific handling guidance. Follow the equivalent instructions supplied for your own lenses.

After removing lenses
- Clean and disinfect as prescribed. Cleaning removes deposits and debris; disinfection is a separate job that reduces harmful germs. Use the GP lens system and sequence your practitioner prescribed. Some systems use separate products; others use a multipurpose product. Follow each product’s label about rubbing, rinsing, disinfecting and storage.
- Use fresh solution. Do not top off old solution or reuse it. Discard leftover solution after each use, as directed by the FDA.
- Store lenses in the instructed case. Use the compatible case and storage method specified for your care system. Keep the case away from water, and clean and dry it as directed.
- Maintain the case. The CDC advises rinsing and rubbing the case with fresh contact lens solution, emptying excess solution and letting it dry with the caps off. Do not rinse it with water. The FDA advises replacing contact lens storage cases every three months or as directed by your eye-care professional.

Choose products by compatibility, not by a generic label
When you need a care product, ask for the rigid gas-permeable contact lens care system prescribed for your lenses. A product advertised for contact lenses is not automatically suitable for every GP lens or care routine. Check its label and confirm compatibility with your eye-care professional.

Do not choose a commercial system on the assumption that one type is proven to prevent ortho-k infections better than another. The cited guidance supports matching the products and sequence to the prescribed GP lens system, not ranking brands by comparative infection-prevention performance.
If your prescribed system uses hydrogen peroxide
Use the supplied special case and follow the product’s full neutralization directions and timing. Never put unneutralized peroxide directly in your eye, apply a lens with unneutralized peroxide on it, or substitute an ordinary lens case. Wait until neutralization is complete before wearing the lens. Consult the FDA’s hydrogen peroxide solution safety guidance and your product label.

Keep water and saliva away from lenses
Do not shower or swim in your lenses, use a hot tub while wearing them, rinse lenses or cases with water, or wet a lens with saliva. Water can carry organisms, including Acanthamoeba, that may cause serious eye infection. Use only the rinsing products allowed by your lens and care-system instructions; current Paragon GP guidance, for example, says to rinse with multipurpose solution or sterile saline rather than tap water.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s 2022 Refractive Errors Preferred Practice Pattern says: “Tap water should be eliminated from the care regimen, as its use is associated with the prevalence of Acanthamoeba keratitis, particularly in cases associated with overnight orthokeratology, as is topping off of solutions.” Read the AAO’s 2022 Preferred Practice Pattern, the CDC’s water-safety guidance and the FDA’s contact lens risk guidance.

Remove it promptly. CDC advises discarding the lens or cleaning and disinfecting it overnight before wearing it again. Follow your own lens instructions and contact your eye-care professional if you are unsure what to do or have any symptoms.
Remove lenses and get help for warning symptoms
Take a lens out immediately if you have discomfort, excess tearing or discharge, unusual sensitivity to light, itching, burning, a gritty feeling, unusual redness, blurred vision, swelling or pain. Do not put it back in. Contact an eye-care professional right away rather than trying to diagnose or treat the problem yourself. If possible, keep the lens in its case so the clinician can examine it.
Paragon’s fitting material also advises removing its lens and calling the eye-care professional for discomfort above 2 on a 1-to-10 scale. That is a Paragon-specific instruction, not a universal threshold for all ortho-k lenses. Paragon CRT fitting procedure.
