How to store jewellery to reduce scratches
Keep pieces separate so they cannot rub against one another or become tangled. Use a fabric-lined case with dividers, individual soft pouches or separate wrapping, and choose a dry, fairly temperature-controlled location. A divided jewellery box or soft pouches are practical options; the important feature is separation, not a particular product.

Chains are especially prone to tangling when stored loose with other pieces. Place them in their own compartment or pouch, and make sure jewellery is dry before storage. Jewelers of America’s storage guidance recommends a lined case or dividers and individual wrapping to prevent pieces from rubbing, tangling and scratching.

What to keep gold jewellery away from
- Swimming: Remove fine jewellery before entering chlorinated or salt water.
- Chores and chemicals: Take it off before household or outdoor work involving cleaning products. Avoid bleach and other household chemicals.
- Exercise and contact sports: Remove jewellery before workouts or activities where it can be knocked, rubbed or exposed to sweat.
- Cosmetics and lotions: Apply them before putting jewellery on when practical. Residue can leave a dulling film.
- Bathing: Store jewellery safely away rather than wearing it in the bath or shower.

Care depends on the gold and its finish

Get piece-specific advice before cleaning jewellery with delicate or coloured stones, visible plating, intricate construction or a finish you cannot identify. A jeweller can also advise on professional cleaning and, for white gold, whether a worn rhodium finish should be re-plated.
