Do not pull off a partially detached nail or glue it back down. Protect the finger or toe, gently clean any minor cut, and arrange medical assessment if the nail is displaced, badly torn or crushed, bleeding will not stop, the digit looks bent, or infection develops. A loose projecting edge may be trimmed back only to the point where the nail is still firmly attached, without cutting attached nail, skin or the nail bed.
This guide explains first aid for a minor injury, the warning signs that need prompt care, what a clinician may do, and how long regrowth usually takes. It is not a diagnosis; a nail that separates without a clear injury can have a different cause.

First, decide whether home care is appropriate
Home care is limited to a minor, stable injury. MedlinePlus describes that situation as bleeding that stops quickly, a nail that is not cut or torn and remains attached to the nail bed, and a finger or toe that is not bent or misshapen. If any of those conditions is absent, arrange clinical assessment rather than trying to manage the nail yourself.

| Small cut or scrape, bleeding controlled, nail still attached, digit straight | Clean gently, protect with a bandage if needed, and monitor for changes. Follow any clinician’s instructions if the injury has already been treated. |
| Loose edge that catches but remains attached farther back | Keep it protected. NHS guidance allows conservative trimming back only to where the nail remains attached; do not cut into attached nail, skin or nail bed. |
| Nail sitting out of position, substantial tear or avulsion, or a badly crushed injury | Seek prompt medical assessment. The nail bed may need cleaning, repair or protection, and an associated fracture may need evaluation. |
| Bleeding that will not stop, a bent or misshapen finger or toe, increasing pain or swelling, pus, fever, or red, hot skin around the nail | Obtain urgent medical care. These findings can indicate significant injury or infection. |
A nail that is partly lifted after trauma may represent an avulsion or nail-bed injury. A nail that separates without an obvious injury can instead reflect a nail-separation condition such as onycholysis, so avoid assuming that every loose nail is a simple tear. Cleveland Clinic explains that onycholysis is separation of the nail from its bed and may require evaluation of the underlying cause: Cleveland Clinic’s onycholysis guidance.

When deciding where to go, use the severity rather than the appearance alone. A small lifted corner with a straight digit and controlled bleeding may be watched after protection. A nail that has shifted, is split through the attached area, or is hanging after a crush is a different category even if only part of the plate remains connected.
What to do immediately after a minor injury
1. Stop and inspect without testing the nail
Wash your hands, then look at the finger or toe without tugging the nail to see how loose it is. Repeatedly lifting it can enlarge a tear in the nail bed and introduce dirt. Do not pull, twist, peel or lever the attached portion. Check the digit’s overall shape and whether bleeding is slowing; do not probe under the nail to find the edge of an injury.
2. Control bleeding gently
If the skin is bleeding, apply steady, gentle pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth. MedlinePlus’s smashed-finger guidance recommends basic first aid and medical assessment when the injury is more than minor: MedlinePlus, “Smashed fingers”. If pressure does not stop the bleeding, do not keep manipulating the nail; seek care. If the cloth becomes wet, place another clean layer over it rather than repeatedly lifting the first layer to inspect the wound.

3. Clean a superficial cut or scrape
For a minor wound, gently wash the area with clean running water and mild soap around the injury. Do not scrub under a lifted nail or force water beneath it. Pat dry and cover the exposed skin with a clean bandage if protection is needed. A clean non-stick dressing is a reasonable optional barrier, but no particular product or brand is required. If a clinician has already dressed the wound, follow that person’s instructions for cleaning and dressing changes instead.
Keep the dressing clean and dry, and change it according to the instructions you were given or when it is soiled. Do not use the dressing to press a displaced nail back into place. Its purpose is to shield the wound from snagging and contamination while you arrange assessment if needed.
4. Reduce pain and swelling
MedlinePlus advises icing through a cloth for pain and swelling. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods rather than placing ice directly on skin or the nail. Elevating the hand or foot above heart level can reduce throbbing. Stop if the skin becomes numb, very pale or painful from the cold. Persistent or escalating pain despite protection is a reason to contact a clinician, particularly after a crush.
5. Protect the nail from catching
Cover the area when clothing, bedding or footwear could snag it. Choose footwear with enough room for an injured toe. Avoid activities that repeatedly strike, bend or press the nail until the wound is stable. Protection should keep the nail from catching without pushing it farther away from the nail bed. Do not tape tightly around a finger or toe; swelling can make a tight wrap uncomfortable and difficult to remove.

How to handle a loose projecting edge
NHS guidance says an injured loose nail can be cut back to the point where it remains attached if the projecting part is catching. This is a conservative trim, not an attempt to remove the nail. Use clean nail clippers, take off only the clearly free edge, and stop before reaching attached nail, tender skin or the nail bed. If you cannot tell where attachment ends, leave it alone and have a clinician trim or treat it.
Never cut through a section that is still anchored, even if it looks discolored or inconvenient. Do not dig under the nail, widen the separation, or file an irregular edge aggressively. A nail that is displaced, split into the attached area or hanging from a significant tear needs professional assessment rather than home trimming. If trimming causes fresh bleeding or exposes a deeper wound, cover it and seek care.
What not to do
- Do not pull the nail off. The attached portion may still be protecting the nail bed, and force can worsen a laceration.
- Do not glue it back on. Household or cosmetic glue can trap contamination, irritate tissue and make examination or treatment harder. There is no home method that reliably reattaches an injured nail.
- Do not pierce the nail or drain blood beneath it yourself. Cleveland Clinic states that nail trephination should be performed by a healthcare provider: Cleveland Clinic, “Nail Trephination”. A separated or split nail may require more extensive evaluation than simply releasing trapped blood.
- Do not keep lifting the nail to check progress. Handling can convert a partial attachment into a larger avulsion.
- Do not apply unprescribed chemicals or ointments under the nail. If a clinician recommends an ointment, splint or dressing, use it exactly as directed.
- Do not assume a cosmetic cover makes it safe. Polish, artificial nails and adhesive can hide drainage or make it harder for a clinician to inspect the nail bed.
Do not assume antibiotics are needed. Treatment depends on the wound, contamination, infection risk and any fracture; a healthcare professional decides whether medication is appropriate.
When to seek medical care
Get prompt assessment for structural injury
Contact an urgent-care service or clinician promptly if the nail is not sitting properly on its nail bed, has a substantial tear or avulsion, or the injury was a significant crush. A bent or misshapen finger or toe may indicate a fracture or dislocation. Persistent bleeding also requires assessment rather than repeated home cleaning.
A displaced nail can conceal a nail-bed laceration. The clinician may need to numb the digit, clean the wound, examine the nail bed and check for an associated fracture. The fact that a nail is still partly attached does not by itself prove that the injury is minor. Tell the service whether the injury involved a door, tool, fall, heavy object or other crush mechanism, since that context helps determine the examination needed.
Seek care for possible infection
Arrange medical review if redness, pain or swelling is increasing rather than settling, if pus drains, or if fever develops. Red, swollen, warm and sore skin around the nail should not be ignored. These changes can occur as an injured wound becomes infected, and waiting for the nail to “grow out” is not a safe substitute for examination. Infection signs can appear after an initially reassuring injury, so continue checking the surrounding skin while the nail grows.
Use a lower threshold when the situation is unclear
If you cannot determine whether the nail is attached, the wound extends under the nail, or the digit is straight, have it examined. A photograph or verbal description cannot reliably establish the depth of a nail-bed injury. When in doubt, protect the area and seek advice rather than trimming or reattaching it at home. A nail that separates repeatedly, involves several nails or has no clear injury also deserves a routine appointment to look for an underlying cause.

What treatment may involve in a clinic
Care is tailored to the severity of the injury; not every partially lifted nail is removed. MedlinePlus explains that, for serious lacerations or avulsions, a clinician may remove part or all of the nail, close cuts in the nail bed, and reattach the nail with glue or stitches. If the original nail cannot be reattached, a substitute material may protect the nail bed while it heals: MedlinePlus, “Nail injuries” (reviewed October 1, 2025).

A temporary splint or protective dressing may be recommended. The nail or a substitute can act as a shield while new tissue forms, but the exact approach depends on how much nail bed is injured and whether the nail is contaminated, split or displaced. A provider may also decide that a stable nail should remain in place rather than be removed.
Tell the clinician how the injury happened, when it occurred, whether bleeding stopped, and whether you cleaned or applied anything to it. Mention increasing pain, numbness, color change, fever or drainage. Do not remove a dressing or disturb a repair unless you are instructed to do so. Ask when the dressing should be changed, which activities to avoid, and when follow-up is needed.
Recovery and nail regrowth
The nail bed can heal before the visible nail has grown out. MedlinePlus estimates that nail-bed healing after nail loss takes about 7 to 10 days, but the replacement nail takes much longer. Its patient guidance gives approximate growth times of 4 to 6 months for a new fingernail and about 12 months for a toenail. The NHS says an injured fingernail usually grows back within 6 months and a toenail can take up to 18 months: NHS, “Nail problems”.
| What is healing or growing | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nail bed after nail loss | About 7–10 days (MedlinePlus, reviewed 2025) | This refers to tissue healing, not a fully grown nail. |
| New fingernail | About 4–6 months (MedlinePlus, reviewed 2025) | MedlinePlus estimate; the NHS describes injured fingernails as usually returning within 6 months. |
| Toenail | About 12 months (MedlinePlus, reviewed 2025) | MedlinePlus estimate; the NHS gives a longer possible range of up to 18 months. |
These are estimates, not promises. Growth varies with the digit, the extent of nail-bed damage and the person’s healing. The replacement may show ridges, grooves, discoloration or an altered shape while it grows. MedlinePlus notes that “Often, a new nail will grow in and replace the old nail, pushing it off as it grows.” The old nail may therefore loosen gradually as the new one advances; that is different from pulling it off before it is ready.

Return sooner if the dressing becomes soaked, pain escalates, the nail shifts, or infection signs appear. Do not judge the final appearance during the first weeks of regrowth. A ridge or uneven edge can move toward the tip as the nail advances, while persistent or worsening changes should be shown to the treating clinician.
If the nail is separating without a clear injury
A nail that lifts gradually, affects several nails, or keeps recurring after a minor bump may not be an acute avulsion. Onycholysis describes separation of the nail plate from the nail bed; Cleveland Clinic’s overview explains symptoms and treatment options and emphasizes evaluating the cause rather than trying to glue the plate down: Cleveland Clinic, “Onycholysis (Nail Separation): Symptoms & Treatment” (updated May 3, 2022).

Arrange a routine medical appointment for unexplained or persistent separation, especially if several nails are involved, the color changes, or the surrounding skin is inflamed. Until assessed, keep nails short only where they are safely free, avoid picking beneath them, and protect them from repeated wetting, chemicals and impact. Do not use nail glue to conceal the separation. A gradual separation is not automatically an emergency, but it should not be ignored if it persists or is accompanied by pain, redness or drainage.

Should I remove a nail that is half off?
No. Do not pull or peel it. Leave attached portions in place and have a clinician assess a substantial tear, displacement or crush injury. Only a clearly free, projecting edge that catches may be conservatively trimmed back to the attached point.
Can I glue the nail down?
No. Household or cosmetic glue can irritate tissue, trap contamination and interfere with examination. Clinical reattachment, when appropriate, is performed after the wound is assessed and cleaned.
Can I drain a dark blood spot under the nail?
Do not pierce the nail or use a home trephination tool. Cleveland Clinic states that nail trephination should be performed by a healthcare provider, who can also determine whether separation, splitting or a fracture needs attention.
How do I know if the injury is too serious for home care?
Home care is only for bleeding that stops quickly, a nail that remains attached and is not cut or torn, and a straight finger or toe. Persistent bleeding, a displaced or badly torn nail, a significant crush, deformity, worsening swelling or infection signs call for medical assessment.
Will the old nail fall off as a new one grows?
Often it will. MedlinePlus says a new nail can grow in and push the old one off. Let that process happen naturally; do not pull the old nail away before it is free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Is redness around the nail normal?
Mild irritation can follow an injury, but increasing redness, warmth, pain or swelling, pus, or fever needs medical review. Do not wait for the nail to grow out if those signs develop.
What if the nail came loose without an accident?
Make a routine appointment, particularly if more than one nail is affected, separation recurs, or color changes. Onycholysis and other causes require evaluation rather than glue or repeated trimming.
A practical care checklist
- Confirm that bleeding has stopped and the finger or toe is straight.
- Do not pull, twist, glue or pierce the nail.
- Gently wash a superficial cut; do not scrub under the lifted plate.
- Cover with a clean bandage or non-stick dressing when protection is needed.
- Use cloth-wrapped ice for pain or swelling and elevate the hand or foot for throbbing.
- Trim only a clearly free, catching edge, and stop at the attached portion.
- Seek prompt care for displacement, a major tear, crush injury, deformity or uncontrolled bleeding.
- Seek medical advice for worsening redness, warmth, pain, swelling, pus or fever.
- Expect months, not days, for a replacement nail to grow; follow the longer toenail estimates when planning recovery.
- Keep any clinician-applied dressing or splint in place as directed and attend recommended follow-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I pull off a nail that is partly detached?
No. Do not pull, twist or peel it. Protect the area and seek assessment for a substantial tear, displacement or crush injury. Only a clearly free edge that catches may be trimmed back to where the nail remains attached.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use nail glue to reattach it?
No. Glue can irritate tissue, trap contamination and make examination harder. Reattachment, when needed, is a clinical procedure after the injury is cleaned and assessed.
When is home care reasonable?
Only when bleeding stops quickly, the nail is not cut or torn and remains attached, and the finger or toe is straight and not misshapen. Otherwise arrange medical care.
How long does a detached nail take to grow back?
MedlinePlus estimates 4–6 months for a fingernail and about 12 months for a toenail. NHS guidance gives up to 6 months for injured fingernails and up to 18 months for toenails.
What signs mean the injury may be infected?
Increasing redness, warmth, pain or swelling, pus drainage, or fever. Contact a healthcare provider rather than waiting for the nail to grow out.

Can I make a hole to release blood under the nail?
No. Cleveland Clinic advises that nail trephination should be done by a healthcare provider, who can check for a split nail-bed injury or fracture.
The Bottom Line
Leave attached nail in place, clean only minor surface wounds, protect the area and trim only a clearly free catching edge. Do not glue, pull or pierce it. A displaced, badly torn or crushed nail, uncontrolled bleeding, deformity or infection signs needs medical assessment. Fingernail regrowth commonly takes up to about six months; toenail regrowth may take 12–18 months.
