PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can capture a screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11 without pressing a Windows-logo key. Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. Choose a capture mode, select New when shown, select the area or window, then annotate, save, or share the result from Snipping Tool.
This method works whether your keyboard lacks the Windows key, the Print Screen key, or both. The two keys solve different problems, so identify which one is missing before choosing a shortcut.
The fastest method: open Snipping Tool from Start
- Select Start with the mouse or another pointing device.
- Type Snipping Tool in the search box.
- Open the Snipping Tool app from the results.
- Choose the capture mode you need: freeform, rectangular, window, or full screen.
- Select New if the app requires it, then make the capture.
- Use the editing controls to mark up the image, then save or share it.
Because this route uses the Start menu rather than a keyboard shortcut, it does not require a Windows key or a Print Screen key. Microsoft documents the same Snipping Tool workflow for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool guidance.
Choose the capture mode that matches the job
Rectangular snip
Drag a rectangle around the exact part of the screen you want. This is usually the clearest choice for a dialog box, chart, error message, or portion of a webpage.

Window snip
Select an open application window. This avoids manually trimming the desktop around the window afterward.
Full-screen snip
Capture the entire display when you need the complete desktop view. If more than one display is connected, check the resulting image before saving so you know which screen was captured.
Do not confuse the Windows key with Print Screen
A keyboard can lack one key while still having the other:

- Broad Compatibility: Designed for use with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and later, Android 7 or later, and Chrome OS
- No Windows logo key: Start search and Snipping Tool solve the problem directly.
- No Print Screen (PrtScn) key: The Start-menu method still works, even though Print Screen shortcuts do not.
- Neither key: Start search remains sufficient; no replacement keyboard is required.
- The Windows key exists but is hard to press: Use the On-Screen Keyboard with the mouse, or continue using Snipping Tool from Start.
The familiar Windows + Shift + S shortcut is a regional-capture shortcut, but it requires a physical or on-screen Windows key. Microsoft says it opens the capture overlay and copies the selection to the clipboard; it is therefore not the answer when the Windows key itself is unavailable. See the official Windows keyboard shortcut list.
What to do when Print Screen is also missing
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible screenshot shortcut on some devices that do not have PrtScn. It is hardware-dependent and still needs a Windows key, so it cannot replace the Start-menu method for a keyboard that lacks that key. The details are in Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard as a mouse-controlled fallback
If the Windows key is physically present but inaccessible, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on On-Screen Keyboard. Click its keys with the mouse or another pointing device. Microsoft notes that “You don’t need a touchscreen to use the OSK.” Its documentation also states: “The OSK has two different layout options, Nav and General.”
You do not need the OSK for the primary procedure: open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and capture from there. The OSK is useful when you need to invoke another shortcut or when several physical keys are unavailable.

Annotate, save, and share the capture
After the snip is taken, keep the Snipping Tool window open while you review it. Use its annotation controls to draw attention to a button, line, or error. Then use the app’s save command to choose a filename and location, or its share command when you need to send the image through an installed sharing option.
- Capture only the necessary region when the image may contain private messages, account details, or unrelated windows.
- For a software bug report, include the complete error text and enough surrounding context to identify the application.
- For documentation, use one consistent capture mode and annotation style so images are easier to compare.
Methods compared
| Method | Windows key required? | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start > search Snipping Tool | No | Reliable capture on any Windows 10 or 11 keyboard | Requires opening the app before selecting the capture |
| Windows + Shift + S | Yes | Fast regional capture when the key is available | Not usable when the Windows key is absent |
| On-Screen Keyboard | No physical key required | Pressing keys that are difficult or unavailable physically | Mouse-operated fallback; unnecessary for Start-menu capture |
| Fn + Windows + Space Bar | Yes | Some devices without a PrtScn key | Device-dependent and does not help without a Windows key |
Troubleshooting
Snipping Tool does not appear in search
Check that you searched for the full app name, Snipping Tool, rather than “screenshot” or “Print Screen.” Confirm that you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, the versions covered by Microsoft’s instructions. If the app still does not appear, use the Settings search for accessibility features and enable the On-Screen Keyboard as a temporary input fallback, then try the Start search again.
The wrong area was captured
Open Snipping Tool again and choose the mode that matches the target. Use rectangular mode for a precise box, window mode for an entire application window, and full-screen mode when trimming would omit necessary context.
You expected a file but only see the image in memory
A shortcut-based regional capture can place the selection on the clipboard. Return to Snipping Tool, open the captured image, and use its save command to create a file in the location and format offered by the app.

The Windows key is present but cannot be pressed
Turn on the On-Screen Keyboard at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, then click the Windows key on the virtual keyboard. For a one-off screenshot, bypass the shortcut entirely and launch Snipping Tool from Start.
The Fn shortcut does nothing
That shortcut is not universal. Microsoft describes it as a possible shortcut on some hardware without PrtScn, not as a guaranteed Windows feature. If it fails, use Snipping Tool from Start instead; it does not depend on the device’s Fn mapping.

If what you need is a screenshot of a website URL rather than the physical desktop in front of you, ScreenshotNeo returns a webpage image or PDF through one request. It is not a replacement for capturing an application’s desktop window, but it avoids opening a browser and manually selecting a region.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
For a URL, use the API documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation:

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I follow these steps with only a mouse?
Yes. Start search, Snipping Tool, capture-mode selection, and the capture itself can all be performed with a pointing device. The On-Screen Keyboard is available when you also need virtual keystrokes.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does the method depend on a particular keyboard layout?
No. The primary procedure uses Windows’ Start interface and Snipping Tool rather than a physical key combination, so the keyboard layout is not part of the requirement.
Is ScreenshotNeo intended to capture my desktop monitor?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures a supplied website URL through its API. Use Snipping Tool for an application window, desktop region, or full physical display.
The Bottom Line
Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and capture from its menu. That path works without a Windows key, without Print Screen, and without buying extra hardware.
