Use a stable list of page URLs, capture them with Playwright on a weekly schedule, and save each run in a dated archive rather than overwriting the previous screenshots. Playwright handles browser capture; your scheduler and storage handle the recurring job and history. The key to useful comparisons is keeping the browser, viewport, and other rendering conditions consistent.
Plan the watch list and capture scope
Start with the exact pages you want to monitor. A small CSV makes the list easy to review and update:

Use full_page when content below the fold matters; use viewport to compare the same visible area each time. Record any relevant context, such as the region or page state you intend to monitor. Keep URLs exact: a locale, campaign parameter, or trailing path can lead to a different page.

The following Node.js example reads the CSV, captures each URL with a fixed viewport and device scale factor, and writes images into a timestamped run folder. It keeps the browser choice and capture settings explicit so later runs can use the same configuration. Playwright supports full-page screenshots; its visual-comparison documentation also warns that rendering can vary with host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

It waits for network idle, which can be unsuitable for sites with persistent network activity; if a page never settles, change the wait strategy to domcontentloaded or wait for a known selector instead. Consider restricting concurrency and adding retries only after observing how the target sites behave.
4. Run it and schedule it weekly
Test once manually with node capture.js. A successful run creates a directory such as captures/2026-10-04T12-00-00-000Z/, containing PNG files and a manifest.json. Schedule the command with the scheduler available in your environment. For example, a Unix-like system’s cron can run the script every Monday at 09:00 UTC:

Keep weekly runs comparable and useful
Standardize what the browser renders
- Keep the browser version, execution image or operating system, viewport, device scale factor, locale, time zone, and wait behavior stable.
- Record the settings with each run. The manifest in the example preserves key capture conditions alongside the timestamp.
- Decide whether consent dialogs are part of what you want to monitor. Cookie banners, ads, personalization, and rotating content can create visual noise; changing how they are handled between runs can make comparisons misleading.
Preserve history and review changes carefully
Do not reuse one output filename for every week. The timestamped directory preserves each run, while the stable page identifier keeps the same page recognizable across runs. Store the archive somewhere with enough space and an appropriate retention policy; the example does not delete old runs or provide remote backup.

A visual difference is a signal to inspect, not proof that a competitor made a substantive change. Ads, personalized modules, dynamic timestamps, and browser-rendering differences may account for apparent changes. Where appropriate, compare stable regions or mask volatile elements. A Playwright script gives you control over browser settings and archive format, but you are responsible for the recurring scheduler, storage, retries, and maintenance. Hosted services may package list-based intake, recurring runs, archives, exports, or alerts. Troubleshooting
- The job works manually but not on schedule: scheduled tasks often run with a different working directory or environment. Use absolute paths for the project, watch list, Node executable, and logs; inspect the scheduler’s log output.
- A page times out: the page may keep network requests open. Change
waitUntilfromnetworkidletodomcontentloaded, or wait for a meaningful selector. A shorter wait may capture an incomplete page, so validate the result. - A screenshot is blank or incomplete: check the saved image and HTTP status in the manifest, then adjust the wait condition for the page. Some pages render content only after interaction or client-side work.
- Names overwrite or collide: the example sanitizes competitor and page names. Give each row a distinct competitor/page pair, and check the generated filenames before scaling the list.
- The visual diff shows many changes: first confirm that viewport, browser environment, locale, time zone, and capture timing stayed constant. Then inspect whether dynamic ads, banners, or personalization account for the differences.
- The CSV row fails validation: use only
viewportorfull_pagein the scope column and provide a valid HTTP or HTTPS URL. The sample parser does not support quoted commas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I capture the whole page or just the viewport?
Use full-page capture when below-the-fold content is in scope; use a viewport capture when the same visible region is the target. Choose per URL and keep that choice stable between runs.
Can the screenshots prove that a competitor changed its site?
No. They provide a visual record for review, but dynamic content and rendering variation can produce differences that do not reflect a substantive site change.
