Make your first ApiFlash screenshot request
ApiFlash accepts GET query parameters or POST form data. The minimal example below saves the returned image bytes to a file. Replace the key and target URL; use a full URL that begins with https:// or http://.

This is especially important for CSS selectors, JavaScript, headers, and cookies. The example is intended for simple values; in production, use a query-encoding library or submit form-encoded POST data.
Keep the API key in server-side code or behind a controlled proxy. Do not place it in browser JavaScript or expose it in a public image URL. Choose between image bytes and JSON
By default, ApiFlash returns screenshot bytes with a content type and content length. Save or stream those bytes when your application only needs the image. If you need an ApiFlash-generated screenshot URL or requested extracted HTML or text links, set response_type=json and process the JSON response instead. The API also documents direct uploads to an AWS S3 bucket or compatible endpoint, which can reduce the amount of image data passing through your application server.
Set capture size, scope, and image format

Choose a viewport that matches the layout you intend to inspect: responsive sites often rearrange content at different widths, so a desktop capture is not a substitute for a mobile-sized viewport. For full-page captures, the API ignores the supplied height, and element capture cannot be combined with full-page mode.
Wait for JavaScript-rendered content
Modern sites may render the initial document before the content you want appears. ApiFlash documents three wait_until modes: dom_loaded, page_loaded, and network_idle; the default is network_idle. Set wait_until_timeout to control the wait limit, from 1 to 30 seconds.
If the important content has a stable CSS selector, use wait_for so capture proceeds when that element appears. ApiFlash documents a 15-second maximum wait for the selector; the request aborts if no matching item appears within that period. Its documentation recommends these conditions over a fixed delay where possible, because they are more reliable for rendered content.

-o dashboard.pngWhen no single element signals readiness, choose a documented wait_until mode and timeout appropriate to the page. A long wait can make captures slower, and a selector that never appears will fail rather than produce a useful screenshot.
Modify the page before capture
ApiFlash’s JavaScript guide, last updated February 9, 2024, says the js parameter injects JavaScript into the page before screenshot capture. The guide instructs users to URL-encode the JavaScript. This can help prepare a page for capture, but treat injected code as page-level automation: test it against the intended page and avoid placing secrets in the script or request URL.
Other cleanup controls include no_cookie_banners, no_ads, and no_tracking, which can remove common overlays or requests. These options affect the capture environment; they do not guarantee that every site-specific dialog or third-party widget will be handled.

Capture a page that requires login
The appropriate authentication method depends on how the target site handles sessions. ApiFlash’s FAQ identifies request headers or cookies for passing tokens or session state, and JavaScript injection as an option for automating a login flow.
- Use an authorization header when the target accepts a token in a request header.
- Use cookies when the site relies on an authenticated browser session represented by cookies.
- Consider JavaScript automation only where the login flow and the API’s page execution support it.
Encode structured values correctly, and never expose credentials in a public endpoint or client-side code. Limit a proxy to known, allowed target URLs; otherwise, a public screenshot route can become a way for others to make requests through your server.
Understand caching, freshness, and storage
ApiFlash documents a default screenshot cache TTL of 86,400 seconds and a maximum TTL of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). Set fresh=true to bypass a cached screenshot when the page has changed and you need a new capture. Caching can avoid repeat rendering for unchanged requests, while bypassing it is appropriate for time-sensitive content; account for that trade-off when scheduling captures.

Use direct image responses when your service can write the bytes to disk or object storage. Choose JSON when your workflow needs the generated link or extraction information. The documented S3-compatible upload option can send output to storage directly rather than routing it through your own server.
Plan for quotas, rate limits, and errors
ApiFlash documents a leaky-bucket limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400. Requests beyond the burst can receive HTTP 429. The service also limits identical failed captures to five requests per hour. Avoid rapid retries of a persistent failure; correct the request or target condition first.
Successful responses expose X-Quota-Limit, X-Quota-Remaining, and X-Quota-Reset headers. A quota endpoint is documented at /v1/urltoimage/quota. The documented HTTP status meanings are:

For production workflows, inspect both the HTTP status and quota headers, and handle non-success responses separately from image bytes. Do not save an error body with an image extension and assume the capture succeeded.

The output file is not a usable image
Check the HTTP status and content type before writing the response as an image. A 400, 401, 402, 403, 429, or 500 response indicates a request or service problem, not a successful capture.

The page is blank or missing content
Wait for the page’s meaningful selector with wait_for, or choose a suitable wait_until condition. Confirm the URL is the page you expect and that any required authentication is passed with headers or cookies.
A selector wait fails
Confirm that the selector matches an element on the rendered page and is correctly URL-encoded. If the item does not appear within the documented 15-second maximum, the capture aborts; use a different readiness signal if the content is delayed or conditional.
The capture has the wrong dimensions or misses an element
Check the viewport settings and whether you selected full-page mode. A full-page request ignores height, and element is ignored when full-page mode is enabled. Also confirm the CSS selector refers to the intended first matching element.
The screenshot looks stale
The default cache lifetime is 86,400 seconds. Set fresh=true to bypass the cached screenshot for a new capture.
The API returns 429 or repeated failures
For 429, lower the request rate and concurrency rather than retrying immediately. For identical failed captures, fix the URL, selector, authentication, or page readiness issue before retrying; ApiFlash documents a cap of five such failures per hour.
