To save an AI agent’s website screenshot in Amazon S3, capture the image bytes in a browser-automation step, then upload those bytes as an S3 object. Capturing a screenshot—or saving it to the agent’s local filesystem—does not upload it to S3. First decide whether you need the visible viewport, a page element, the full scrollable page, or the full desktop; then capture the right scope, upload it, and control access to the resulting object.
Choose what the screenshot should include
The capture method depends on what the agent needs to show. Browser-level screenshots are designed for webpage content; an operating-system-level capture is needed when the image must include the desktop or content outside the browser viewport.

| Capture | What it includes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The browser’s currently visible page area | You need a quick record of the page as it appears at a particular scroll position. |
| Element | A selected page element, such as a chart or product card | You need one component rather than surrounding page content. |
| Full page | The scrollable webpage beyond the current viewport | You need a long-page record, including content that requires scrolling. |
| Full desktop | The desktop, potentially including content outside the browser viewport | You need to show native dialogs, alerts, or other operating-system interface. |
Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, with PNG, JPEG, or WebP output and filename and scale options. A full-page webpage capture is not the same thing as a full-desktop image.

This example uses Python Playwright to navigate to a page and capture its full-page PNG, then uses the AWS SDK for Python (Boto3) to upload the bytes. It is a browser-automation workflow suitable for an AI agent that can call the code as a tool. It does not depend on a particular agent framework or assume a particular AWS region, bucket policy, or retention period.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Prerequisites
- Python and the Playwright package, with a Playwright browser installed.
- Boto3 and AWS credentials available to the process through an approved AWS credential provider.
- An existing S3 bucket and an IAM role or identity permitted to upload objects to the intended bucket and key.
- A target URL the browser is allowed to access. Do not pass untrusted URLs to a privileged browser without validating them.
Install the Python packages and browser with:
python -m pip install playwright boto3
python -m playwright install chromium

Save as capture_to_s3.py. Set TARGET_URL, S3_BUCKET, and optionally S3_KEY in the environment. The script waits for the page’s load event and then for network activity to become idle; sites with continuous network requests may need a different readiness condition.
import os
from urllib.parse import urlparse
import boto3
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
TARGET_URL = os.environ["TARGET_URL"]
S3_BUCKET = os.environ["S3_BUCKET"]
S3_KEY = os.environ.get("S3_KEY", "screenshots/page.png")
parsed = urlparse(TARGET_URL)
if parsed.scheme not in ("http", "https") or not parsed.netloc:
raise ValueError("TARGET_URL must be an absolute http or https URL")
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
page.goto(TARGET_URL, wait_until="load", timeout=60000)
page.wait_for_load_state("networkidle", timeout=30000)
image_bytes = page.screenshot(full_page=True, type="png")
browser.close()
s3 = boto3.client("s3")
s3.put_object(
Bucket=S3_BUCKET,
Key=S3_KEY,
Body=image_bytes,
ContentType="image/png",
)
print(f"Uploaded s3://{S3_BUCKET}/{S3_KEY}")
The call to page.screenshot returns image bytes because no local filename is supplied. put_object sends those bytes to S3; setting ContentType helps clients treat the object as a PNG. The example uses a fixed object key, so repeated runs replace that object. Use a unique key per capture if you need to retain each run.
Capture a viewport or a specific element instead
For a viewport screenshot, change the capture line to image_bytes = page.screenshot(type="png"). For one element, locate it and capture its bounding box:

element = page.locator("main article").first
image_bytes = element.screenshot(type="png")
Replace main article with a selector that identifies the intended element on the target page. If it matches nothing, the capture will fail; if it matches multiple elements, first selects the first match, which may not be the one you intended.
Give an AI agent a reliable capture workflow
An agent should treat navigation, readiness, capture, and storage as separate operations. A successful browser navigation does not guarantee the relevant content has appeared, and a successful screenshot does not prove the S3 upload completed.
- Validate the target. Restrict the agent to permitted domains or validate URLs in your application. Avoid allowing arbitrary pages to reach internal services or sensitive resources.
- Navigate and wait for the intended state. Wait for a meaningful selector or page condition when possible. A generic load or network-idle wait can be insufficient for sites that render content later, and network-idle may never occur on pages with persistent requests.
- Capture the chosen scope. Use a viewport, element, full-page, or desktop capture based on the requirement. For a browser page capture, Playwright or AgentCore Browser’s browser-automation/CDP path is appropriate; for the full desktop, use AgentCore’s OS-level
InvokeBrowserscreenshot action. - Upload the returned bytes. Pass the image bytes to an S3 upload operation, choose a deliberate bucket and key, and set the object content type to match the image format.
- Verify the result. Treat the upload response or a subsequent object check as the success signal. Log the bucket and key, not credentials or sensitive page contents.
When working with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Browser, AWS documents browser automation, screenshots through CDP, and Playwright integration. The AgentCore session-management example decodes screenshot data returned through CDP before writing it as a local file. That local write is still distinct from uploading the image to S3.

Choose direct screenshot storage or session recording
A direct upload is the right fit when the output you need is a selected screenshot image. AgentCore session recording serves a different purpose: it stores a broader interaction trail in S3, including DOM changes, user actions, console logs, CDP events, and network events.

| Approach | Stored output | Configuration and use |
|---|---|---|
| Capture and upload a screenshot | The image you choose to capture | Capture the bytes and explicitly upload them to an S3 bucket and key. Use when an image is the required artifact. |
| AgentCore session recording | A broader browser interaction record | Requires an S3 bucket, an IAM execution role with write permissions, and a custom browser configured for recording. Use when replay or observability of the interaction is needed, not merely a screenshot. |
Do not enable session recording as a substitute for the explicit screenshot upload when your application needs a specific image object. Recording and screenshot capture have different outputs and setup requirements.
Control access and deliver the image
Give the execution identity only the S3 write access it needs, scoped to the intended bucket or object resources. Keep AWS credentials in the agent’s trusted runtime or role configuration; do not expose them to the webpage, browser JavaScript, prompts, or model-visible page content.

If a client needs to display the screenshot, one option is to create a presigned URL for the uploaded object. The AWS architecture example uses this approach so a client can fetch the image from S3 without routing the image bytes through the application’s WebSocket. Treat the URL as a temporary bearer link: anyone who obtains it may access the object until it expires. Keep the bucket private unless public access is explicitly required.
Common errors and fixes
- The page opens but the screenshot is blank or incomplete: the target content may render after the load event. Wait for a content-specific selector or state before capturing; check whether lazy-loaded images require scrolling or a full-page capture.
- The network-idle wait times out: some pages maintain analytics, polling, or streaming connections. Replace that wait with a specific selector or a bounded delay after the needed content is visible.
- The element capture fails: the selector may not match, may identify a hidden element, or may be ambiguous. Confirm the selector against the loaded page and wait for the element to become visible before taking its screenshot.
- The S3 upload is denied: check that the process is using the intended AWS identity and that its IAM permissions allow the requested write to the exact bucket and key. Also check bucket policies and any encryption requirements.
- The object exists but the browser does not display it as an image: confirm that the uploaded bytes match the file type and that the object has the corresponding content type, such as
image/png. - A later run appears to erase an earlier capture: the example’s default key is fixed. Use a unique key for each capture or deliberately version and manage objects according to your retention needs.
- The upload succeeds but a client cannot fetch the image: check the bucket’s access policy and the URL’s expiration. Use an appropriately scoped presigned URL when temporary client access is intended.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Capture time depends on the page, browser startup, readiness condition, and screenshot scope; there is no universal duration established here. Full-page images can be larger and take longer to produce than viewport or element captures. Select the smallest capture scope that answers the application’s need, and avoid an unbounded wait on pages that never become network-idle.
For recurring jobs, reuse a managed browser or worker where your runtime supports it rather than starting a new browser for every URL; bound navigation and readiness waits, and handle navigation and S3 errors separately so a transient page failure is not mistaken for a storage failure. S3 storage, requests, data transfer, and any browser or agent service usage may incur charges under the applicable AWS pricing and service configuration. The cited material does not establish a cost or performance figure for an individual workload, region, or runtime.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF; it does not itself place the result in your S3 bucket. The following Python example captures an image through the API, then explicitly uploads the returned bytes to S3. Create an API key and provide it as SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY, along with TARGET_URL, S3_BUCKET, and optionally S3_KEY.
Install the dependencies with python -m pip install requests boto3, then run:
import os
from urllib.parse import urlparse
import boto3
import requests
url = os.environ["TARGET_URL"]
parsed = urlparse(url)
if parsed.scheme not in ("http", "https") or not parsed.netloc:
raise ValueError("TARGET_URL must be an absolute http or https URL")
response = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={
"access_key": os.environ["SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY"],
"url": url,
},
timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
image_bytes = response.content
bucket = os.environ["S3_BUCKET"]
key = os.environ.get("S3_KEY", "screenshots/page.webp")
boto3.client("s3").put_object(
Bucket=bucket,
Key=key,
Body=image_bytes,
ContentType="image/webp",
)
print(f"Uploaded s3://{bucket}/{key}")
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Does saving a screenshot locally put it in S3?
No. Local file writing and S3 upload are separate operations; upload the screenshot bytes explicitly.
Can an S3 client display a private screenshot without making the bucket public?
Yes. A presigned URL can provide temporary access to an object without making the bucket public.
