Playwright supports screenshots of the viewport, an element, or the full page, and lets you provide an output path. It does not automatically derive a sanitized filename from the URL.
Build the workflow as two explicit steps
- Navigate and verify: have the agent open the requested URL, then confirm the browser is on the intended page. A navigation call returning does not guarantee that every dynamic element has finished rendering.
- Choose the capture scope: capture the visible viewport, a particular element, or the full scrollable page, according to what the task needs.
- Derive a filename in application code: read the final browser URL after navigation or interaction, parse it with a URL parser, and apply your naming and collision rules.
- Pass an explicit output path: use an extension matching the image format, and make the output directory and overwrite behavior deliberate.
Playwright documents explicit screenshot paths and image types in its Page API. Its CLI and MCP interfaces also support named screenshot output, with interface-specific path behavior described below.

Turn a page URL into a safe filename
Use the parsed hostname and path
Do not split the raw URL on punctuation. Parse it as a URL, then build a readable base name from the hostname and pathname. For example, the illustrative URL https://docs.example.org/guides/page?campaign=spring#steps could become docs-example-org_guides_page.png. This is a naming convention you implement; Playwright does not supply this URL-to-slug behavior.

- Usually omit query parameters and fragments. They can contain tracking, session values, or personal data. If a query parameter genuinely identifies a meaningful page state, include only an allowlisted subset.
- Normalize repeated separators, replace characters disallowed by your target filesystem, and trim leading or trailing punctuation.
- Cap filename length to suit the destination filesystem or storage service.
- Preserve the extension for the selected format, such as
.png,.jpeg, or.webp. - Plan for collisions: distinct URLs can normalize to the same name, and repeated captures of one URL may overwrite each other. Add a stable short suffix or choose an explicit versioning policy when distinction matters.
Use a known output directory and pass a deliberate path. A relative path does not mean the same thing in every interface: the Playwright Page API resolves it against the current working directory, while the Playwright MCP screenshot tool resolves a relative filename against the workspace root.

Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture

Use the interface that fits your agent

CLI and MCP documentation list PNG, JPEG, and WebP. A larger device-pixel capture can help with legibility, but it is not automatically the right choice: select resolution and scope for the intended use. Without a custom name, the documented defaults use timestamped page-... names.

Make capture timing task-specific
Web pages can render content after navigation, load images lazily, or update after scripts run. Choose a readiness condition that matches the page and the content you need, then inspect the result when correctness matters. There is no single wait condition established by the cited Playwright documentation as suitable for every site.
- For a page whose key content appears asynchronously, wait for a task-relevant element or state before taking the screenshot.
- For a page where only a particular component matters, wait for that component and capture it directly.
- For a full-page image, verify that content lower on the page has loaded; a full-page option alone does not prove that lazy content has rendered.
Common problems and fixes

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright automatically name a screenshot from the page URL?
No. Provide a filename or path; parsing and sanitizing the page URL into that name is application logic.
Should I include a page’s query string in its screenshot filename?
Only when an allowlisted parameter distinguishes a meaningful state. Query values can expose tracking or sensitive data.
