Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo capture a webpage as a WebP image, first choose the capture scope—visible viewport, selected region, or the entire page—then use your browser’s screenshot tool. Edge and Firefox document capture controls, but their built-in save actions do not establish direct WebP export. When the browser saves PNG, convert it with Google’s cwebp utility or an image editor, then verify that the output really ends in .webp and opens correctly.
Choose the kind of webpage image you need
A viewport capture records only what is currently visible. A region capture records a rectangle you select. A full-page capture includes content below the fold and is usually preferable for long articles, documentation, invoices, and landing pages. These are different outputs: scrolling and stitching viewport images manually can introduce seams, duplicated pixels, and lazy-loaded content that never appeared in the first pass.
- Viewport: Use it for a current-state bug report or a social post showing the visible screen.
- Selected region: Use it for one chart, card, dialog, or section.
- Full page: Use the browser’s full-page command so the tool can scroll and assemble the page in one operation.
- Element or automated capture: Use Firefox Developer Tools or an API when you need repeatable selectors, timing, device settings, or batch jobs.
Capture and save a page in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft’s Edge Screenshot feature supports a full page or a selected area, including long or moving webpages, with optional pen or touch markup before copying or saving (Edge Screenshot documentation).
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or press
Ctrl+Shift+S. - Choose Capture full page for the entire document, or drag over the area you need.
- Review the result, add markup if required, then choose copy or save.
- Check the saved file’s extension. If it is PNG or another format, convert it to WebP as described below.
Names and placement of commands can vary by Edge version, device, and market. If the shortcut does not open the tool, use the page context menu or Edge’s command search.

Capture a page in Firefox
Firefox’s Screenshot tool can save a full page, the visible area, a custom region, or a page part it detects automatically. Mozilla documents the Download action as producing a PNG image; Ctrl+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+S on macOS, are documented save shortcuts (Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot guide).
- Open the page and open the page context menu.
- Select Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page, Save visible, a custom selection, or the highlighted page part.
- Download the image, then inspect its filename. Firefox’s documented output is PNG, not a guaranteed WebP export.
- Convert the PNG to WebP before uploading or sharing it.
Full-page capture may trigger lazy loading as Firefox scrolls. If a site loads content only after interaction, the resulting image can still differ from what a human sees after clicking through the page.
Use Firefox Developer Tools for selectors, delay, and device-pixel control
For technical workflows, Firefox’s Web Console provides a :screenshot helper (Firefox Developer Tools documentation). Its filename must end in .png, so conversion remains a separate step.
- Open Developer Tools and select the Web Console.
- Run a command such as
:screenshot shot.png --fullpagefor a complete page. - For one element, use
:screenshot card.png --selector "#pricing-card". - To wait for a page or animation, add a delay, for example
--delay 2. - Control device pixel ratio with
--dpr 2when you need a higher-resolution raster image. - Convert the resulting PNG to WebP.
Selectors must match the live DOM. A framework-generated class that changes on every build is less reliable than a stable ID or data attribute.

cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
The number is a quality setting, not a promise of a particular file size or visual result. Compare the output at the intended display size, especially when text is small or screenshots contain gradients.
To convert WebP back to PNG when a downstream editor requires it, use Google’s dwebp utility:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
Install the WebP command-line tools using the package method appropriate for your operating system, then run the commands from the folder containing the image. Google’s setup and usage instructions are at Getting Started with WebP.
Quality, transparency, and file-size checks
- Lossy WebP can reduce size substantially compared with comparable JPEG images, but the exact result depends on content and quality.
- Google reports a 26% average reduction for WebP lossless images versus PNG in its format comparison, and 25–34% smaller lossy WebP versus comparable JPEG at equivalent SSIM quality (Google’s WebP format overview).
- For lossy RGB WebP with transparency, Google describes an approximately three-times-smaller comparison with PNG. Treat these as general format figures, not a guarantee for your screenshot.
- WebP can become larger than the source, including when lossy content is converted to lossless WebP or when a higher quality value is selected (WebP FAQ).
Preserve transparency only when the source and your conversion mode support it. A screenshot with a solid page background has no practical need for an alpha channel.
Verify that the result is really WebP
- Confirm the filename ends in
.webp; changing a suffix without converting the bytes does not change the format. - Open the file in a current browser or image viewer. MDN lists WebP support in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari (MDN image format guide).
- For automated pipelines, inspect the file type or HTTP
Content-Typerather than trusting the name. - Check dimensions and visual details at 100% zoom. Tiny text, sticky headers, animations, and delayed images are common sources of defects.
Browser rendering support and screenshot export are separate capabilities. A browser may display WebP while its screenshot interface still saves PNG.

Automate capture with a screenshot API
For scheduled reports, previews, regression fixtures, or many URLs, an API avoids opening a browser manually. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request, removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
Its 63 options cover full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

See the complete parameter reference at ScreenshotNeo documentation. Responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, so your code can distinguish a clean capture, a bot check, a blank page, a timeout, a failed load, or a cache hit.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the one-call ScreenshotNeo request when you need a predictable WebP file without configuring browser automation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
- Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots; the response identifies the outcome.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The file says PNG after I asked for WebP
Native browser tools and Firefox’s console helper document PNG output. Convert with cwebp; do not merely rename the extension.
The full-page image is cut off
Retry with the browser’s explicit full-page option. If the site uses infinite scrolling, content may not exist until interaction or scrolling; an API wait condition, delay, or custom script can make the state reproducible.

Images or fonts are missing
Wait for a selector or network idle, allow the required resources, and check whether authentication or custom headers are needed. A blocked third-party request can leave a blank region even when the page itself loads.
A cookie dialog covers the screenshot
Dismiss it manually before browser capture, hide its selector where supported, or use ScreenshotNeo, which accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms along with common popups and chat widgets.
The WebP is larger than the PNG
Try a lossy quality setting, compare visually, and test the source mode. Google notes that WebP is not guaranteed to be smaller in every conversion.
Text or animations differ between runs
Use a fixed viewport, device scale, timezone, geolocation, and wait condition. Disable animations with custom CSS where your workflow permits, and capture after the page reaches a stable state.
The site shows a CAPTCHA or blank response
Do not attempt to bypass access controls. Record the failure and investigate authorization, rate limits, or an allowed integration. ScreenshotNeo marks bot checks and blank or failed loads in its response and does not bill them as clean shots.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Screenshot versus webpage archive
A screenshot is a raster image of rendered pixels. Chrome’s pageCapture API creates an MHTML archive containing a tab and its resources, not a WebP image (Chrome pageCapture documentation). Use MHTML when preservation and offline inspection matter; use WebP when you need an image for a report, preview, or design asset.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does renaming a PNG to .webp convert it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. Use a WebP encoder such as cwebp and verify the resulting file type.
Can I capture only one HTML element?
Yes. Firefox’s :screenshot helper supports –selector, and ScreenshotNeo accepts a CSS selector for element capture.
Is WebP always smaller than PNG or JPEG?
No. Google documents average reductions in common comparisons but also notes cases where WebP output is larger.
What should I use for a page that requires a login?
Use an authorized browser session or a service that supports the required cookies, headers, or authorization. Never attempt to bypass access controls.
