Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn Power Automate for desktop, use the browser automation action Take screenshot of web page. First launch or attach to a supported browser, then choose whether to capture the entire webpage or one web element and save the result to a file or the clipboard. This captures webpage content—not your monitor or a foreground application window.
What you need before building the flow
- Power Automate for desktop and a desktop flow.
- A supported browser instance, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer, configured with the required Power Automate browser extension or interaction method. See Microsoft’s web automation setup and limitations.
- The URL you want to capture and a destination folder if you will save an image file.
Browser automation actions require a browser instance. You can launch a new browser with a Launch new browser action or attach to an existing browser when your flow starts. Browser automation cannot open or attach to a browser owned by a different Windows system user. Actions that require physical interaction generally need a focused, non-minimized browser window.
Build a full-page screenshot flow
- Create or open a desktop flow in Power Automate for desktop.
- Add a browser-launch action. Select your browser, enter the target URL, and save the browser instance produced by the action. If the page is already open, use the action for attaching to an existing browser instead.
- In the actions pane, open Browser automation and add Take screenshot of web page.
- In the action’s browser-instance field, select the instance created or attached in step 2.
- For the capture selector, keep Entire web page. This requests the webpage document rather than only the currently visible viewport.
- For the save option, select File. Enter a complete path, such as
C:UsersAlexPicturesreportsproduct-page.png, and select the required image format. - Save and run the flow against the target page. Confirm that the image exists at the path before adding later processing, upload, or notification steps.
The action does not provide output variables. Your flow continues after the screenshot action, so use a known path when a later action must move, upload, rename, or email the image.
Capture only one part of a webpage
- Launch or attach to the browser as described above.
- Capture the target control, card, table, article, or other page object as a web UI element. Use the browser automation element picker, not a desktop UI automation element.
- Add Take screenshot of web page and select the browser instance.
- Change the capture selector from Entire web page to Specific element.
- Choose the captured web UI element, select File or Clipboard, and configure the destination or image format.
- Run the flow and verify that the selector still identifies the intended object after the page has loaded.
Web UI elements belong to browser automation. Desktop UI elements are intended for UI automation actions and are not interchangeable. Microsoft explains the distinction in its UI elements guide.

Choose the output destination and format
| Choice | Use it when | Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| File | You need an artifact that another flow step, person, or system can read. | Provide the full destination path and choose a supported format. |
| Clipboard | You will immediately paste the image into another application. | Select Clipboard; no file path is required. |
The browser action lists BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF as file-format choices. PNG is usually a practical choice for interface text and diagrams; JPG can produce smaller photographs but may soften text. The action’s documented options and exceptions are in Microsoft’s browser automation actions reference.
Webpage screenshot versus screen screenshot
Use Take screenshot of web page when the subject is content inside a browser page. Use the separate Workstation > Take screenshot action when the subject is the desktop display or a foreground window.
| Requirement | Action | Capture targets |
|---|---|---|
| Web document or one webpage element | Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page | Entire web page or Specific element |
| Monitor or application window | Workstation > Take screenshot | All screens, Primary screen, Select screen, or Foreground window |
The workstation action also supports file or clipboard output and the same listed image formats. It is the right choice when you need the browser chrome, another application, a dialog, or a monitor region rather than webpage content. See the workstation actions reference.

Make captures reliable
Wait for the page state you actually need
A browser launch can finish before a single-page application has rendered its final content. Add a page-load wait, a wait for a distinctive web UI element, or a controlled delay before the screenshot. For dynamic pages, wait for the element whose presence proves that the data or chart is ready; a fixed delay alone may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.

Keep the browser usable for interaction
Browser automation generally does not move the mouse. If your preceding steps require physical interaction, keep the browser focused and not minimized. Avoid switching users while the flow is running.
Use stable selectors
Element screenshots depend on the captured web element and its selector. Prefer stable IDs, roles, or other attributes that do not change on every render. Re-capture the element when the site redesigns its markup.

Prepare the destination
Create the parent directory and use a path the running Windows account can write. Build unique filenames with a timestamp when repeated runs must not overwrite one another. If a downstream step expects PNG, set PNG explicitly instead of relying on a prior run’s extension.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|---|
| “Element or CSS selector not found” | The element was not captured as a web UI element, the page is not ready, or its selector changed. | Confirm the browser instance, wait for the target element, recapture it as a web element, and inspect whether the selector still matches. |
| Screenshot is incomplete or shows an old state | Rendering or asynchronous data had not finished. | Wait for a reliable page element or state, then capture. Check that the correct tab and URL are active. |
| File cannot be saved | Invalid path, missing directory, permissions, locked file, or an unsupported extension/format combination. | Use an absolute path, create the directory, test write access under the flow’s account, close a conflicting file, and select one of the documented formats. |
| Clipboard save fails | The running environment cannot complete the clipboard operation. | Run in an interactive desktop session, check clipboard availability, and use File output when a persistent artifact is acceptable. |
| Browser cannot be launched or attached | Missing extension/configuration, another system user owns the browser, or the browser is unavailable. | Install and configure the required browser setup, run under the same user, and launch or attach explicitly before browser actions. |
| Specific-element capture fails after a site update | The page’s DOM or selector changed. | Reopen the page, capture the replacement web UI element, and retest the flow. |
These categories correspond to the exceptions Microsoft lists for the action: selector lookup, file saving, clipboard saving, and screenshot capture. They identify where to investigate; they do not guarantee one universal fix for every website or desktop environment.

- Page length: an entire-page image can be much taller and larger than a viewport image. Use specific-element capture when you only need a component.
- Repeatability: identical URLs can produce different images when content is personalized, time-dependent, or loaded asynchronously. Control the browser account, wait condition, and run timing when visual consistency matters.
- Security: a screenshot can contain account data, tokens displayed in a page, or personal information. Restrict the output folder and remove files according to your retention policy.
- Failure handling: place downstream file or upload actions after the screenshot and check that the expected file exists. Log the URL, timestamp, and path so an unattended run can be diagnosed.
- Cloud-flow scope: this is a Power Automate for desktop workflow. The documented action operates through a local browser instance; it is not a cloud-flow webpage-rendering feature.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so a scheduled script or automation can capture a URL without maintaining a desktop browser session. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Every plan includes its features; the free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Why is my desktop UI element rejected?
Browser screenshot actions require web UI elements. Capture the object with browser automation rather than desktop UI automation.
How do I capture the browser window including its toolbar?
Use Workstation > Take screenshot and choose Foreground window, or choose the appropriate screen target.
Does the webpage screenshot action create an output variable?
No. Save to a file or clipboard and refer to that destination in later flow actions.
