Capture the evidence before the copied post changes or disappears. Keep the raw, unedited source video and its creation metadata; record the original TikTok URL and account; save the copied post URL, handle and visible date information; take screenshots and a short screen recording with the capture time in UTC; then prepare side-by-side comparisons and a chronological evidence log. Submit that package through TikTok’s in-app intellectual-property flow or Copyright Infringement Report with a precise ownership explanation.
This guide shows exactly what to save, how to timestamp it, how to preserve context and how to avoid evidence that is difficult to authenticate. It also explains what TikTok’s guidance does—and does not—promise about reports, fair use and deleted posts.

What a convincing TikTok-copying evidence package contains
TikTok’s evidence categories are easiest to satisfy when you treat the case as a chain of records rather than one screenshot. Your package should let a reviewer answer four questions: what did you create, where and when did you publish it, what did the other account use, and how can the matching expression be seen clearly?
- Original work: the raw video file, untouched exports, creation metadata and, if available, project files and export history.
- Ownership and first-post context: an authenticated view of the account that posted the original, the original URL, handle, caption, sound and the UTC time you captured that page.
- Copied-use record: the copied URL and handle, timestamped screenshots, and a context-preserving screen recording that moves from the account or page context into the copied frames.
- Comparison: side-by-side stills or a time-coded comparison showing matching footage, sequence, edits, captions, audio or other expressive elements.
- Evidence log: stable filenames, UTC capture times, URLs, accounts and short descriptions, with unchanged originals and redundant copies.
A timestamp on a screenshot does not by itself prove when a video was created or who owns it. Its value comes from the combination of the source file, authenticated account context, URL, visible page details, capture time and a clear comparison.

Preserve the original video and its metadata first
Keep an untouched source file
Export or copy the original camera or editing-project file before making any new edits. Do not add a watermark, title card, crop or color correction to the evidence copy. TikTok’s IP Protection Center asks for the raw, original video with timestamp and metadata, without edits, overlays or watermarks. Retain the camera file, the file you uploaded and, when available, the project file and export history.
Make a working copy for comparisons and annotations. Store the untouched source in a read-only or otherwise protected location so you can demonstrate that the comparison copy was derived from it.
Record useful metadata
For each source file, note the filename, file size, format, duration, frame rate, resolution, creation date shown by the operating system or camera, and the application or device that created it. Metadata can be stripped during export, so missing metadata does not automatically defeat a claim; it simply means the other records in your package become more important.

A hash does not establish authorship or a legal date, but it shows that the file you later submit is the same byte-for-byte file you preserved at capture time.
Prove which account posted the original
Capture an authenticated account view
Open the original post while logged in to the account that published it. Capture the profile or account context and the post itself so the handle, caption, sound and URL can be read. TikTok’s guidance specifically asks for a screenshot of the account used to post the work, with evidence that you are logged in.
Do not rely on a downloaded image of the profile alone. A context screenshot should show enough of the page to connect the post to the account, while a separate close capture can make the caption, sound and visible date information legible.
Record the original URL and UTC capture time
Copy the complete original-post URL into your log. Record the handle exactly as displayed, including punctuation and capitalization where relevant. Write the capture time in UTC using an unambiguous format such as 2026-10-16T14:32:08Z. Your local device clock may be wrong or may display a different time zone, so include UTC explicitly rather than only “2:32 PM.”
Save the page HTML or a PDF only as an additional record if your workflow permits it; do not substitute those files for the screenshots and video TikTok requests. Keep the original capture files in their native format.
Capture the copied post before it changes
Save URL, handle and visible dates
Open the copied post and copy its full URL immediately. Record the account handle, caption, sound, hashtags and any visible posted or modified date. If the post is behind a login, age gate or regional restriction, note that condition in the log and capture the authenticated view that you actually used.

A page can display relative labels such as “2d ago.” Record that label exactly, but do not convert it into a precise date unless the page supplies one. The UTC time in your log tells the reviewer when you observed the page; it is not a claim that the displayed relative label is an exact publication timestamp.
Take context-preserving screenshots
Use a sequence rather than a single cropped frame:
- Capture the account or profile context, including the handle and page address if visible.
- Capture the post view with the copied video, caption, sound and visible date information.
- Capture close frames where matching scenes, edits or captions can be inspected without losing the URL or account connection.
Keep the original, uncropped screenshots. You may create cropped derivatives for a comparison sheet, but label them as derivatives and retain the source files unchanged.

Record a continuous path from the account or page context into the copied frames. Scroll at a readable speed, pause long enough for the handle and URL to be seen, and avoid switching accounts during the recording. Keep the original video file produced by the recorder, not just an exported clip. Write the UTC start and end times in your log, plus the device and browser or app used.
A screen recording preserves relationships that a crop can lose: which account was open, which URL was loaded and how the matching frames appeared in sequence. It is supporting evidence, not a replacement for the raw source video or still screenshots.
Show copying of expression, not just a shared idea
TikTok’s policy states: Copyright protects an original expression of an idea (e.g., the specific way a video or music is expressed or created) but does not protect underlying ideas or facts.
Your comparison should therefore identify the expressive elements that match.
Build a side-by-side comparison
Create a table or image sheet with a frame from your original on one side and the corresponding copied frame on the other. Add timecodes from each video and a short, factual description:

- the same camera footage or distinctive composition;
- the same sequence of shots or cuts;
- matching edits, transitions, speed changes or overlays;
- the same captions, typography or on-screen placement;
- the same recorded or synchronized audio;
- other creative details that are unlikely to result from the underlying topic alone.
Do not claim that two videos infringe merely because they discuss the same event, fact or trend. Explain what was reused and where it appears. If only a short segment matches, identify that segment rather than implying that the entire work was copied.
Use time-coded notes
For longer videos, list the original and copied time ranges, for example “00:04–00:09: identical five-frame sequence and caption placement.” Keep these notes descriptive. A reviewer should be able to locate each match in the preserved files without relying on your interpretation.
Maintain a chronological evidence log
Use one append-only log for every action. A spreadsheet, CSV or plain-text file is sufficient if it is backed up and the entries are not silently overwritten.

Use names that sort chronologically, such as 2026-10-16T143208Z_copied-profile.png and 2026-10-16T143455Z_copied-scroll.mp4. Do not rename the original files after hashing without updating the log.
Keep redundant copies
Store the originals in at least two separate locations, such as an encrypted local drive and a separate cloud or offline copy. Keep the evidence log with each copy. Redundancy protects against an accidental deletion or a failing device; it does not make an otherwise inaccurate capture more persuasive.
Choose a capture method that preserves context
The best method is the one that leaves you with readable page context, a URL, a visible account and a repeatable record. These options address different parts of the evidence requirement.

For evidence, save the returned file exactly as received, record the request URL and UTC time, and preserve the response headers. TikTok says a copyright owner or authorized representative can use the in-app intellectual-property flow or the online Copyright Infringement Report. Select the route available to you and provide the requested contact and ownership information.

Describe each copied URL and expression
List every copied URL separately. Tie each URL to the corresponding handle and evidence filenames. State what you created, when and where you posted it, and exactly which expression was reused: for example, the same footage and cut sequence, identical captions and synchronized audio. Attach the raw-file, account, timestamp and comparison evidence requested by the form.
Incomplete information can lead to denial. Do not exaggerate, omit relevant facts or assert ownership of material you did not create. TikTok warns that intentionally misleading or fraudulent reports can create liability under applicable law.
Account for legal exceptions
Copyright exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing vary by jurisdiction. A match may still require legal analysis, and a report is not a guarantee that TikTok will remove the post. Keep your explanation focused on the copied expression and avoid promising a particular outcome.
If the copied post is deleted, edited or private
Preserve your own evidence immediately
Do not wait for the uploader to respond. Save the screenshots, screen recording, URLs, raw files and log as soon as you discover the copying. If the post later disappears, your preserved captures still show what you observed and when, although they cannot recreate information you never captured.
Understand TikTok’s formal preservation process
TikTok’s law-enforcement guidelines describe a separate preservation process. A request must be submitted through the designated webform, on law-enforcement letterhead, signed, and identify the username, data type and date ranges. TikTok will honor a qualifying formal request to preserve user data for 90 days, with a possible additional 90-day extension after a formal request to extend. This is not a general creator self-service hold, so an individual creator cannot invoke it as a personal preservation button.
When access is restricted
Record the restriction itself: the login requirement, private-account notice, region message or age gate, together with the URL and UTC time. Do not attempt to bypass access controls. Explain in your report what you could and could not view and provide the evidence that was lawfully available to you.
Troubleshooting common evidence failures
The screenshot has no URL or handle
Take a new context capture with the browser address bar or in-app account header visible. Keep the original close-up as a detail image, but do not submit it as the only proof of where the frame came from.
The date is relative or missing
Record the displayed text exactly, add your UTC observation time and avoid converting “yesterday” or “2d ago” into an asserted calendar date. Use the original upload file and account-post records to establish your own publication history.
The video has been re-encoded
Submit the untouched source and the uploaded copy you retained, if available. Explain which visual or audio elements match even if file metadata differs. Re-encoding alone does not identify who created the work.
The page shows a consent banner, popup or chat widget
Dismiss it manually before taking an evidence screenshot, or use a capture workflow that records the page after those elements are removed. Keep one context image showing the account and URL; a clean close frame is useful only when it remains traceable to that context.
An automated capture returns a blank page or bot check
Do not treat the failed image as evidence of what the post contained. Save the response and its verdict for your log, then capture the page manually while logged in or retry with an appropriate wait, user agent, cookie or authorization setting. The report form rejects an attachment
Keep the original native files, then create clearly named copies in a format and size accepted by the form. Never overwrite the originals. In the description, map each attachment to a URL and time range so the reviewer can follow the package even if one derivative is unavailable.
Timing, repeatability and cost considerations
Capture quickly, then capture consistently
The first pass should preserve what can vanish: the copied URL, account context, visible date, screenshots and screen recording. A second pass can create polished comparisons, hashes and a better index. Use the same UTC notation and filename pattern throughout so the chronology remains clear.
Separate observation from interpretation
Write “same five-shot sequence at 00:04–00:09” in the log, not “obvious theft.” Put legal conclusions in the report only where the form asks for them, and distinguish facts you observed from information supplied by another person.
Use automated captures as supplements
Automation helps you repeat a public-URL capture and preserve a returned file, but it does not establish authorship, account control or the legal status of the use. For those questions, the raw source, authenticated account screenshot and precise comparison remain essential.

- Preserve the raw original video, metadata, project files and export history available to you.
- Capture an authenticated view of the account that posted the original.
- Record original and copied URLs, handles, captions, sounds, visible date text and UTC capture times.
- Take context-preserving screenshots and retain the native screen recording.

TikTok’s developer guidance dated August 4, 2026 describes a three-calendar-day remediation period after a substantiated infringement report for the covered developer-content workflow. That timing is specific to the workflow described there; do not treat it as a universal deadline or guaranteed result for every creator report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot prove that I created the TikTok video?
No. It proves what was visible at a recorded time. Authorship is supported by the raw source, creation metadata, project history and your account-post records together.
Can I use the same evidence if the copied account blocks me?
Use only access available to you lawfully. Preserve the restriction notice, URL and UTC time, and include captures or records supplied by a person who could view the post, identifying their source.
Should I contact the uploader before filing?
You can communicate if it is safe and appropriate, but do not delay preservation while waiting for a reply. A message is not a substitute for the raw files, URLs, screenshots and log.
What does the three-day period mean?
TikTok’s August 4, 2026 developer guidance describes three calendar days for remediation after a substantiated report in a specific developer-content workflow. It is not a universal promise for all copyright reports.
